I knew it. I knew it was too good to be true.
The idea of finally escaping this nightmare, of going back home where things were at least normal, was just a fantasy I'd let myself believe in. As we neared the airport, I thought for a fleeting second that maybe, just maybe, I was going to be okay. Maybe Blaze would wave his hand and command the officials to let me on the next flight, and I'd be back to safety—back to the world I knew, where monsters were just things parents warned you about.
Yeah, no.
Things did not go like that.
As we neared the airport, Blaze stopped abruptly. I didn't even see it coming. One moment, we were speeding down the road, the wind biting my skin, the next—complete stillness. A sudden halt that made my stomach lurch, my muscles tense, and my heart skip a beat.
