"The Order," Reed said, and I knew exactly what he meant. My blood turned cold, but I didn't show it. The old geezers were at it again. The same fools who had tried to burn me alive for daring to defy their ancient, misguided rules. The damn council of ancient fools was coming for her again—those stupid, stubborn old geezers who'd been pulling the strings for centuries. They didn't care about right or wrong, or who deserved to live and die. No, all they cared about was their old, twisted ways, and how a human like Clare—a mere human—could be the key to their doom. They saw her as an abomination, something to be eradicated because I—we—were drawn to her. To them, she was an abomination, a mistake that had to be eradicated.
