Chapter 236 - Chapter 233

Of course, Bill knew how strong Yoko had become. If it had been purely physical, she would have gone ashore with the assault forces. However, he had no intention of putting the child in danger, and seeing her behavior, he began to wonder if he'd made a mistake in allowing the junior sailors to leave New Haven.

But now nothing could be changed, and after he said a few encouraging words to Akis, he turned to the Boss.

"Listen here," he began seriously. Bill knew the Boss was smart enough to at least roughly understand human speech, and he continued speaking simply: "Don't even think about flying mindlessly. Don't stray from the ship. If you spot a pirate ship nearby, just set it on fire; don't try to ram it."

Seeing the car-sized beetle nod and lie down, Bill felt he understood the mission and then went to meet with the ground assault commanders.

This special military operation was to consist of twenty teams, each consisting of fifteen Marines. These teams would ascend the slopes of the mountain city and suppress any resistance.

Twenty "Bugbears" would be divided into groups of four and held in reserve, ready to respond to flares as needed. With their "Impulse Boots" and gloves, Bill was confident they could hold off even the most dangerous pirates, allowing the regular forces to retreat.

The last reserve consisted of his lieutenants, in whom Bill had complete confidence.

Command of the two ships and their crews was handed over to Nelson, who surprised Bill by developing a comprehensive strategy and took his role very seriously. Nelson would command eighty marines, and his primary task was to anticipate where and when to deploy them.

By the time the meeting concluded, both ships had been in Hannibal Harbor for about two hours. They sent a message to the island's authorities, notifying them of a special military operation.

After everything had been planned, the captains knew their duties, and Bill, Bascoud and Borodo went down into a small boat with one sail.

Their goal is to decapitate the snake, eliminating Gasparde's team before they can do any damage or escape.

Borodo was reluctant to join this small group, but Baskud had little information about the pirate lair. Bill knew that Borodo's quick reflexes and resourcefulness would be decisive.

As their single-masted boat moved forward, Bill glanced back and saw teams of men boarding lifeboats and launching themselves into the water. He knew their small group had to act quickly.

As Bill turned back toward the island, many of the Marines serving under his command were watching. Seeing their captain leading the operation boosted morale, even among the newly drafted Marines from Ruluka.

One such recruit was a young man named Pearson, who could never have imagined that he would be where he was today, having lived his entire life on the island of Ruluka.

Recalling his entry into the Defense Forces, Pearson had dreamed of a comfortable job since childhood. And although he was never considered particularly smart, he at least knew how to "read a room."

On Ruluka Island, the best job was undoubtedly serving in the defensive forces. Yes, sometimes he had to feign menace in front of a pirate crew, but Pearson was a master at creating the appearance of speed and courage, while in reality he always found himself in the rearguard.

He was so good at it that by the age of twenty, he had become one of the mayor's most valuable soldiers. Pearson loved this role, as he was well paid and had ample time to spend on whatever caught his eye that day.

Of course, there were downsides, like having to escort the mayor's stupid grandson, but even that could be minimized if you came up with an excuse, like going to the shooting range or "inspecting the perimeter."

Like most residents of Ruluka, Pearson disliked the mayor, but so what? You don't have to like someone to get paid.

City residents complained about the extra taxes on restaurants and bars, but they had enough money to buy these things anyway, so what's the problem? If they cared so much, they might as well become soldiers, Pearson thought.

"And then it all fell apart," Pearson thought irritably, rowing so slowly that his boat wouldn't be the first to reach the shore.

The Marines came to town and it turned out the mayor was an old pirate!

Pearson had been there the night the tall Marine captain had confronted Wetton and his "elites," and even the memory of that nightmare made him break out in a cold sweat.

The big man opened up Wetton, his son and captain of the defensive forces, like he was opening a can of tuna.

Of course, before that he had been "cut out", or, as he himself called it, fallen to the deck when a storm in human form swept through his bewildered comrades.

He was then tied up, arrested, and narrowly escaped a piracy charge by showing his "sincerity" in how much he "hated pirates" and volunteered to join the Marines.
