Angels descending to the mortal realm?
Luo Wei's eyes flickered. "Isn't the Wesley family devoted to the Goddess of Justice?" she asked slowly. "Could it be that they didn't receive a divine decree because the Goddess of Justice never sent an angel?"
"No." Qin crossed her hands over her chest, expression earnest. "The deity I worship didn't send an angel either, but He still gave us a divine decree, although it came through The Church."
"Qin, the deity you worship is..."
"The God of Beauty, Hathor. He is the god of beauty and romance, wielding authority over art and inspiration, fragrance and beautiful dreams." Qin said it with unmistakable pride.
Hathor. Wasn't that the Egyptian goddess of love and beauty?
The mythological figures stitched together in this world were truly something. Egyptian gods, Greek gods, Norse gods, and the world's backdrop even carried traces of Celtic mythology throughout.
What exactly was the game company thinking, throwing deities from completely different origins into the same pot? Weren't they worried they'd be at each other's throats every single day?
And Hathor and Freya were both gods of love and beauty. Their original divine domains overlapped, didn't they?
"Luo Wei." Qin waved a hand in front of her face. "What are you thinking about?"
"Ah, nothing." Luo Wei looked at her. "I'm just a little curious what kind of divine decree you received. Would you be willing to share?"
Qin hesitated. "This..."
"It's fine if not." Luo Wei dropped her gaze, her brows drawing together in a faint, quiet sorrow. "I just... you know. The deity I worship has already fallen."
"Don't say that, Luo Wei." Qin took her hand. "I understand your pain. A deity's fall is devastating, but we still have to go on living."
A beat passed. Then: "Actually, there's nothing that can't be said. This decree is even related to the God of Life. It's fine to tell you."
"Related to the God of Life?" Luo Wei blinked. "But hasn't He already fallen?"
"Yes, everyone knows He fell. But no one knew why." Qin's voice turned serious. "This divine decree told us the truth."
"A shameless thief god stole the Scepter of the Goddess of Life, shattered His Divine Throne, and caused Him to fall and dissipate."
"The Sun and Moon Gods were furious. The Love God wept with grief. None of them had the heart to bless believers who wished to conceive children."
"So the heavenly gods sent down twelve angels, ordered them to disguise themselves as humans, and scatter across the Western Plains to hunt down that despicable thief god and take revenge for the God of Life."
Luo Wei stared at her.
She was the shameless, despicable thief?
Who exactly was the thief here? The Love God, who'd taken up residence on the God of Life's Divine Throne, and the Sun and Moon Gods, who'd been feeding on the laws of life, had the nerve to say that without a single twinge of guilt?
And "thief god." What a degrading title to slap on her.
"Did the divine decree mention what the thief god is called?" Luo Wei asked, teeth pressed together.
"No. It only said the thief god is an evil god. Nothing else." Qin gave her a gentle look. "Don't take it so hard, Luo Wei. We're mortals. No matter how much we hate that thief god, we can't do anything about it."
"The Sun and Moon Gods have already sent their angels. They'll catch that thief god sooner or later."
Luo Wei showed her teeth in a smile that didn't come close to reaching her eyes. "You're right. They will definitely catch... it."
Catch thin air. They could catch themselves.
If she let them get anywhere near her, she'd forfeit the right to her own surname.
She held her smile until lunch was finished, then walked back to Starfall Residence with a stomach full of barely-contained fury.
"Troy!" She stared up at the ceiling and called.
"Here." Troy appeared behind her.
Luo Wei turned around. The sight of him in all black, head to toe, made her anger spike. "Dressed like that in the middle of the day. Are you planning to go rob someone?"
Troy was genuinely confused. He'd always dressed like this.
Black fabric hid stains. Blood splatters didn't show. She'd never had a problem with it before.
"What happened to the clothes I bought you in the Northlands?" Luo Wei demanded. "Why aren't you wearing them?"
Troy lowered his head. "That's knight attire. Too conspicuous."
Knight armor was also impractical for running or jumping, and his employer had a habit of assigning him jobs that required a certain amount of discretion. That outfit simply wasn't suitable for city work.
"Go buy a new set." Luo Wei tossed him a gold coin. "White, yellow, red, I don't care. Just pick something that isn't black."
Troy caught the coin and lifted his head immediately. "Done. I'll go now."
"Who said go now? I still have something for you first." She stopped him. "You mentioned staying in the Calamity Forest for a year. How close is it to the Wasteland?"
"Close," Troy said. "But the Black Reef Coast, east of the forest, is the closest point to the Wasteland."
"Is there a dock at Black Reef Coast? One that goes to the Wasteland?"
"Yes. Everyone who travels to the Wasteland looking for ancient temple ruins departs from there. Five days by ship."
"Then there must be a lot of people passing through Black Reef Coast."
"More people in Black Reef Town itself. The coast is mostly fishermen, plus adventurers and mercenaries coming in from inland."
So. High foot traffic, a busy harbor full of all sorts, with sailing routes south to the Wasteland and land routes west into the Calamity Forest.
Luo Wei was satisfied. Perfect place to distribute leaflets.
"Troy. Come here."
She made him lower his head, rose onto her toes, and murmured a few sentences into his ear. When she finished, she patted his shoulder. "Got it?"
Troy looked uncertain. "Got it. Collect leaves, nail identical characters onto a board, then scatter them from above."
"You don't need to recite it back to me," Luo Wei said, frowning.
"Right. Sorry." He nodded.
She still wasn't satisfied. She leaned in again and went through it carefully from the start. "Find the most common leaves at that location. Go for wider ones. Easier to print on."
"Reverse the characters and fix them onto the wooden board, then hammer a row of thin iron nails along each stroke."
"The spacing between nails can't be too wide or too tight. Too wide and the text blurs. Too tight and the leaf tears through the middle. Find the right balance yourself."
"The printing leaves need to be uniform in size. Stack them neatly, set the printing plate over them, and press down evenly. When you lift them off, work from the bottom up..."
By the time she finished, Troy exhaled quietly, took a step back, and asked, "What words are going on the leaves? Should I write them?"
Luo Wei shook her head, her expression shifting into something knowing. "No. Come with me. I'll write you a template."
She brought him to her bedroom, cut a strip of linen from the bedsheet, and began writing with a quill pen. Block letters, neatly centered, each sentence carefully justified on both sides. Every character was rigid and uniform, as though drawn with a ruler rather than written by hand.
Anyone who saw this typeface would never think it came from a human hand.
She worked through each letter without rushing, blew the cloth dry, and handed it to Troy.
"Keep this dry. The ink will run if it gets wet."
"Understood." Troy took the cloth, glanced down.
His forest-green eyes went wide.
"This... this... you want me to c-carve this, onto the leaves, and scatter them?"
"What's wrong with you?" Luo Wei gave him a serene smile. "It's just a story, Troy. You're not actually taking it seriously, are you?"
Troy stared at her.
Just a story. She was calling this just a story.
This was blasphemy.
He looked down at the cloth again. The words were no less startling the second time.
In stiff, ruler-straight letters, the linen read:
SHOCKING! The God of Death has snatched the Scepter of the Goddess of Life directly from the Love God's hands! The Love God, consumed by jealousy, weeps bitter tears, and has vowed to reclaim her beloved's keepsake!
