Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: a smile behind sadness

The next day. Eleanor lay on the bed in the medical room, her body still weak from being trapped in a tube for hundreds of years, plus her amputated arms and legs made her look even more pathetic. Meanwhile in the next room, Ellyana was mixing some medicinal serums to cure cancer, she had made them several years ago for a little girl in White Moon, she followed the recipe she had made herself for several years of her life to find a drug that could kill cancer cells.

Violence sat silently beside Eleanor, praying to God to save her sister. Her emotions were a mixture of joy and fear. She was happy to be saved by the person who brought her here, but also afraid that Eleanor wouldn't be cured. Suddenly, the sound of the door opening made her stand up, expecting Ellyana to have already made the medicine, but all she saw was Selena.

Selena approached Violence slowly.

"So you're Violence... can we talk?" she said seriously.

"Is this about my sister?" Violence asked quietly.

"No," she said, shaking her head.

"I didn't come for that. I came for you!"

"For me? Why?" Violence asked curiously.

Selena smiled.

"My name is Selena. I'm a Crimson Wing scientist. Cassandra told me to take you to the lab where we'll repair and upgrade you a bit."

Violence fell silent, turning to Eleanor, who hadn't recovered yet.

"But I can't leave her alone," she said softly.

Selena put her hand on her shoulder, trying to reassure her.

"Don't worry, Ellyana knows what she's doing."

After a moment of thought, Violence nodded slowly. "Okay."

Selena took Violence to the laboratory to repair it, while Violence felt nervous, with many questions and doubts running through her mind: what if she lost consciousness? What if she died permanently? She wasn't ready to die until she saw Eleanor smile.

When they arrived at the laboratory, Vivian, Lily, and the Rossiya Rosetta twins were waiting in the chairs.

"Ahh, finally the canvas has arrived," Vivian said excitedly.

"Welcome~" Lily greeted warmly.

"Haha~ We have something very challenging ahead of us," Rossiya said cheerfully.

"Hmm, we'll be ordering lots of coffee tonight since this is the same project as Lily," Rosetta said quietly.

Selena donned her lab coat, ready for action. "Okay, girls, put on your stockings. We're working late tonight; I have something else to do after this."

Vivian unveiled the blueprints for Violence's new body, the same shape but with a more sophisticated and elegant design, making her stronger and more beautiful. Lily sat Violence down to calm her down while Rossiya inspected her body for internal and external damage. Rosetta slowly removed some of Violence's external components to inspect her body for rust.

After a few moments of inspection, they began to discuss things a little further away from Violence and Lily.

Rosetta crossed her arms calmly.

"Okay...we can't upgrade her."

Rosiya nodded in agreement.

"But there's one thing we can do...we'll just make a new body for her."

Selena touched her chin.

"Hmm, then we'll make the skeleton and blueprints first."

Vivian jumped happily, chuckling.

"Okay, my youthful enthusiasm is burning brightly. I'll talk to her privately to get some information about what kind of body she wants."

The four of them finally reached a final decision, agreeing to create a new robotic body for Violence and transfer her consciousness into the new body.

Meanwhile, Cassandra quietly entered Eleanor's room to check on her. She sat stroking her hair, feeling immense pity for the innocent girl. Ellyana entered with a syringe containing the cancer drug, ready to inject it into Eleanor. She saw Cassandra sitting there, staring at the girl.

"Miss Cassandra...what are you doing here?" Ellyana asked softly.

"I'm just checking something..." she whispered, looking at Eleanor. "What exactly do they want from you..."

Ellyana approached Eleanor, slowly injecting the medicine into her body, while speaking to Cassandra.

"Miss, I need to tell you something..."

"Just say it!" Cassandra said.

"This antidote isn't as effective as the ones I've made before because I used a lot of ingredients on previous cancer patients, so I suspect it'll only slow the progress, not cure it completely." She said worriedly.

"I have someone who might be able to help us. Come in!" Cassandra ordered.

The door opened slowly, and a woman, about 25 years old, with wavy brown hair and a doctor's uniform, stood there, holding a suitcase. Her eyes radiated a sense of serenity as she calmly approached.

"Good afternoon~," the girl said with a polite bow.

"Ellyana, let me introduce her. This is Nancy. She's the professional doctor Laura successfully evacuated a few weeks ago," Cassandra said.

"I've never seen cancer cured using herbs before..." Nancy said, reaching for a notebook.

"I've never tried this on cancer cells before..."

Ellyana raised an eyebrow, clearly confused by her words.

"Tried what?"

"Senior Ellyana, can I see your prescription?" Nancy asked politely, extending her hand.

Ellyana was increasingly confused by her words, but she didn't argue. She handed her a small, pill-shaped device containing a prescription for a terminal cancer drug. Nancy calmly took it and wrote the prescription down in her important-looking notebook. After a few moments of writing, Nancy closed the notebook.

"Miss Cassandra, we can perform surgery to kill the cancer cells," Nancy said, placing a hand on Eleanor's shoulder.

"Good, prepare the operating room now," Cassandra ordered.

Ellyana stared at the two of them. She clearly had no idea what they were going to do in the operating room, but for the patient's sake, she would go along with it as long as it was the solution.

On the other hand, Bianca was drying Gladia's wet body in her room with a towel and a hairdryer. Even though Gladia had a tracking device Lisa had installed on her leg, she had no intention of running away.

"Yes, my new little sister is clean and beautiful. Look at yourself in the mirror. You're as beautiful as a daisy in a meadow," Bianca said softly.

"I don't see anything," Gladia replied coldly.

"Ah...sorry, I got too excited, hehe," she chuckled, playfully punching her shoulder. "So, my dear little sister~ you can be honest with your older sister about everything that's on your shoulders. Talking makes you feel better, you know?"

"Are you trying to get information out of me?" Gladia said coldly.

"You could say that, but I just want to know something about you, not anything else," Bianca replied, stroking her chin.

Gladia sighed softly. This was the first time in her life that anyone had shown her such attention and warmth, and she didn't want to waste such a good opportunity.

Gladia finally spoke, her voice weak and sad.

"I was just a dog to everyone at the orphanage. They didn't even bother looking for me or worrying about me when I was caught."

"I was born blind, so my mother hated me for it. I never saw her face, but I knew she was there. As a baby, I was treated like a pet dog by the other children, even my own mother. I ate their leftovers and drank the dirty water there. I never received anything called 'kindness' at all."

Bianca's heart shattered upon hearing that, and she cried softly into her shoulder and hugged her to tell her everything was okay. "Oh, my poor baby~ you've been through hell, as if the world cursed you for being born..." Bianca said as her hand stroked her hair. "I can't heal the wounds of your past, but we can build a happier future together. Now you're back home in Lyovianne."

"From now on, I'll teach you everything so you can live happily here, starting with the little things, okay?" Bianca said calmly.

She stood up to get something she had prepared in her closet. A few moments later, Bianca returned holding a braille book to teach her how to read. She slowly opened the book to the alphabet page and placed it on Gladia's lap. She took her hand and made it touch a spot.

"Now, this is pronounced A," she said softly.

"A...A..." Gladia said.

Bianca continued to touch her hand to the two dots below.

"This is B."

"B...B..." Gladia repeated.

Watching Gladia's enthusiasm for learning filled Bianca's heart with eternal joy. She patiently taught her the letters like a doting older sibling. After half an hour, Bianca closed the book and clapped her hands in celebration.

"Wow~ you finally finished it! You're truly talented, hehe," Bianca said cheerfully, clapping her hands lightly.

Gladia fell silent, her lips trembling, forcing a smile, but she held it back so as not to appear too pleased with this small gesture. She tapped her hands nervously, a drop of sweat falling to the ground. Seeing this filled Bianca's heart with satisfaction; she had finally managed to melt the frozen wall.

"You don't have to hold back what you want to let out, just let it out~," Bianca said, stroking her cheek.

Gladia couldn't help it, her lips finally curved into a perfect, soft smile. She shed tears as she smiled softly, this was the first time in her life she had smiled. She immediately hugged her tightly, feeling the affection enveloping her heart softly, making her plunge into the pool of love from someone who cared for her. Bianca hugged her body tightly, feeling touched and proud of herself for being a big sister to this broken woman.

Three days had passed. Voltrania was combing Liora's hair in her room, still unable to wipe away her smile at the girl's confident behavior.

"How are you doing so far, dear?" she asked.

The girl chuckled softly.

"Hehe, Mama's so gentle combing my hair."

Voltrania smiled softly. Perhaps this was the right therapy for her, trying to forget her delusions by having a new soul as the mother of this child. Suddenly, a soft knock on the door interrupted their peaceful moment. Voltrania looked up, her cheeks puffed out in annoyance at the disturbance.

"Come in," Voltrania said in an annoyed tone.

Angelina opened the door slowly and stepped in silently, her expression still impassive, indicating she had something to discuss. She approached and looked at them.

"Voltrania, I'm sorry to bother you, but could we talk for a moment?" Angelina asked.

Voltrania turned to Liora.

"Honey~ could you give this letter to Aunt Lisa?" she said, holding out the envelope.

Liora took the envelope, excited to receive her first mission from her mother; she would become a great Crimson Wing in the future. She immediately ran out of the room without a word. Voltrania stood and sat on the sofa, inviting Angelina to sit. Angelina sat down happily. The open window brought in a gentle breeze that eased their conversation.

Angelina crossed her legs, sighing to ease the burden of the conversation.

"So you finally found out... about your delusions."

Voltrania crossed her arms over her chest, clearly growing increasingly irritated.

"First, you interrupted my rest. Second, you immediately asked that without considering whether I was offended."

Angelina nodded respectfully.

"Right, I apologize for jumping straight to the point."

Voltrania sighed, trying to relax a bit.

"Huh~ so what if I already knew?"

"That's... very surprising news. I'm grateful to finally be free from this charade just to make you happy," Angelina replied flatly.

"I feel embarrassed to leave my room, embarrassed to meet the others," Voltrania said, covering her face and looking down.

Angelina sipped her tea slowly.

"Well, you should be ashamed of yourself. After realizing your delusions, you locked yourself in your room with your...new daughter for three days."

"But if you want, we can keep it going. Being Queen of a democracy isn't that bad, is it? Even if you only earned that title socially without being of royal blood."

Voltrania looked up, staring at her seriously. "But I don't feel worthy to lead if my people are dissatisfied with my performance."

Angelina stood up, grabbed her collar, and slapped her hard across the face. "Listen to me, you're not what you think you are." She slapped her again, "don't ever let those feelings poison you. I'd rather have a Voltrania that lives in delusion but makes its people feel safe and prosperous than the Voltrania I have before me now."

"If it weren't for you, we might not have a safe and prosperous life. Our country may be small, but we all stand on this cursed world as victims trying to survive, you are our hope."

"Even though you indoctrinate our people against crime by constantly reminding them of the trauma and dangers outside the walls, you still possess something that not all leaders possess: love for the people."

Voltrania's eyes began to well up with tears as she looked at her. She was indeed a leader who always listened to the truth from anyone about herself, but Angelina's honest words left her at a loss for words. Voltrania hugged Angelina tightly, her face still red from the slap, but she didn't care, something inside her was burning again.

Liora suddenly returned much earlier than expected, seeing them in a touching moment of warm embrace. Liora slowly approached them, trying not to disturb them. She stopped in her tracks when she saw the red slap mark on her mother's face, and she began to panic.

"Mama? Why is your face red? Did this fierce auntie do that?" she said, pointing at Angelina.

Voltrania wiped her nose on Angelina's shoulder. "Mama...no..."

Liora immediately grabbed the first aid kit and broom. She pointed the broom's tip at Angelina, clearly defending her mother like a little warrior.

"Hey, you fierce woman, you'll pay for this," she said loudly.

Angelina rolled her eyes in annoyance, offended by the broom and the snot on her shoulder. But she couldn't deny that Liora's behavior was incredibly cute. She stood up and left the room without another word. Liora immediately opened the first aid kit and applied a compress to Voltrania's face, deeply worried about her mother.

"Is Mama okay?" she asked softly.

"Mama's okay, honey~ in fact, Mommy's back to life," she replied softly.

Liora tilted her head, confused by her mother's words. Voltrania smiled softly, finally accepting herself, and her motherly spirit growing with each passing second.

"I'll still be a Queen..." she said quietly.

"If Mommy becomes Queen, I'll be a Princess, haha," Liora said cheerfully.
