The sun was shining brightly over Edgbaston. Day 5. The final day of a series that had spanned two years. India needed 7 wickets. England needed a miracle (377 runs). The "Bazball" philosophy had taken a hit with the late wicket of Alex Lees the previous evening, but with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow at the crease, hope still flickered in the English camp.
Virat Kohli led his team out. The huddle was quick. "Patience," Kohli said. "The pitch is flat. We have to work for these wickets."
Aarav Pathak took the ball. He had 3 balls left in his over from the previous evening (Over 57.4).
Over 57 (Continued): Aarav Pathak to Jonny Bairstow
Ball 4: Bairstow took guard. He looked focused. No smiles today. Aarav steamed in. The morning freshness gave him an extra yard of pace. 148 kmph. Good length, just outside off. Bairstow defended solidly to cover. Dot.
Ball 5: Aarav went fuller, searching for the swing that dismissed Lees. But the morning sun had dried the air. No swing. Bairstow drove firmly to mid-off. Dot.
Ball 6: Aarav banged it in short. A wake-up call. Bairstow swayed out of the way. Dot.
End of Over 58.Score: Eng 118/3.
For the first hour, the pitch lived up to the forecast. It was a road. The heavy roller had killed whatever demons were left. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow settled in. They didn't go berserk; they played sensible, aggressive cricket.
Jasprit Bumrah and Aarav Pathak bowled tight lines, but the edges didn't carry, or the ball beat the bat without finding the edge.
Over 59 (Bumrah): Root played a glorious back-foot punch for FOUR.
Over 62 (Aarav): Bairstow flicked a stray delivery off his pads for FOUR.
Over 65 (Bumrah): Root drove through covers. 3 runs.
The partnership grew. They added 34 runs in the next 12 overs without losing a wicket. England moved past 150. The crowd began to find its voice again. "Root! Root! Root!"
Nasser Hussain: "This is better from England. The pitch has gone flat. It's a good batting day. If these two bat till lunch, India might start looking at the field placements nervously. They need a breakthrough."
Sunil Gavaskar: "Kohli needs to change things up. The pacers have bowled well, but on this flat deck, you need something different. Maybe the golden arm?"
Virat Kohli sensed the drift. He took Aarav off. He looked at Shardul Thakur. "Lord," Kohli said, tossing him the ball. "Do your thing."
Over 71: Shardul Thakur to Joe Root
Harsha Bhogle: "Shardul Thakur into the attack. He has a knack for picking up wickets when nothing is happening. Joe Root is batting on 40-odd. He looks immovable."
Ball 1: Shardul started with a gentle outswinger. Root left it alone. Dot.
Ball 2: Shardul ran in. He didn't have the pace of Aarav or Bumrah. He bowled at 132 kmph. He bowled a cross-seam delivery. It pitched on a good length outside off. Root, looking to dominate the change bowler, tried to force it through the off-side off the back foot. But the ball... it did something strange. It hit the seam and jagged back in sharply, staying a fraction low. Root was cramped for room. He tried to adjust, bringing his bat down. Inside edge. Onto the thigh pad. Onto the stumps. Clatter.
Sunil Gavaskar: "HE'S DONE IT AGAIN! The Man with the Golden Arm! Shardul Thakur comes on and strikes in his first over! Joe Root drags it on! A nothing shot really, but Shardul makes things happen! The partnership is broken! India gets the massive wicket of Root!"
Nasser Hussain: "Unbelievable. He just has this habit. Root was looking so comfortable against the express pace, and then he gets out to Shardul. Dragged on. England 4 down now. That is a hammer blow."
Joe Root b Thakur 42 (88)Score: Eng 152/4
Stokes joined Bairstow. But Kohli didn't let Shardul rest. He brought Mohammed Shami from the other end.
Over 74: Mohammed Shami to Jonny Bairstow
Bairstow was on 40. He knew he had to attack now. Shami, however, was in a rhythm.
Ball 1: Shami bowled a beauty. Seamed away. Beaten. Dot.
Ball 2: Bairstow drove to mid-off. Dot.
Ball 3: Shami went round the wicket. He angled it in, then straightened it off the seam. Bairstow, trying to feel bat on ball, poked at it. He played with hard hands. Thick outside edge. It flew to Virat Kohli at first slip. Kohli fumbled! The ball popped out! But Rishabh Pant dived to his right and snatched the rebound!
Harsha Bhogle: "CAUGHT! A bit of juggling in the slips, but Pant cleans it up! Shami gets the reward for his persistence! Jonny Bairstow goes! Two quick wickets and the door is blown wide open! England are 5 down!"
Jonny Bairstow c Pant b Shami 40 (62)Score: Eng 161/5
Nasser Hussain: "That is the game right there. Root and Bairstow gone in the space of 20 minutes. Shardul Thakur with the magic ball, and Shami with the skill. India is rampant. 5 wickets away from the series win."
Sunil Gavaskar: "The bowling change worked wonders. Kohli brought Shardul on at the right time. Now, they are into the all-rounders and the tail. With Aarav Pathak rested and waiting to come back with reverse swing... it looks ominous for England."
The Indian team celebrated. Aarav high-fived Shardul. "Lord for a reason," he laughed. Shardul grinned. "Just put it in the right area, Seth."
England was 161/5. The target of 495 was a distant dream. Survival was the only question now.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fall of Jonny Bairstow usually signals the end of resistance for most teams. At 161/5, chasing 495, the writing was on the wall. The Indian team was buzzing, sensing victory before tea. Virat Kohli was clapping, urging his bowlers to finish the job.
But Ben Stokes, the England captain, on the pitch had a different script in mind. He was joined by Sam Billings, a man who played T20 leagues around the world. They met mid-pitch. There were no defensive prods in the shadow practice. Just aggressive swings. "We don't block," Stokes said, adjusting his gloves. "We hit."
Over 76: Mohammed Shami to Ben Stokes
Ball 1: Shami, tails up after getting Bairstow, ran in hard. He bowled a length ball on off. Stokes didn't respect the good ball. He walked down the track—two steps—and smashed it on the up through the covers. FOUR.
Nasser Hussain: "Well, that answers the question! Ben Stokes is not going to die wondering. First ball he faces after the wicket, and he charges Shami! That is a statement."
Ball 2: Shami shortened the length. Stokes pulled. It wasn't convincing, but it cleared mid-wicket. 2 Runs.
Ball 3: Stokes defended. Dot.
Ball 4: Shami went full. Stokes drove straight. FOUR.
Sunil Gavaskar: "This is risky. India has a massive lead. Stokes is trying to hit his way out of trouble, but Shami is a wicket-taker. If he nicks one, it's game over."
Over 77: Shardul Thakur to Sam Billings
Sam Billings faced Shardul Thakur. The "Lord" had broken the Root partnership, but Billings decided to target him.
Ball 1: Shardul bowled a gentle outswinger. Billings shuffled across and played a scoop shot. A T20 shot in a Test match chase! It flew over the keeper's head. FOUR.
Harsha Bhogle: "Incredible! First over he faces, and he plays the paddle scoop! Sam Billings is treating this like an ODI chase. He knows the field is attacking, so there are gaps behind the wicket."
Ball 2: Shardul corrected, bowling straighter. Billings flicked it in the air over square leg. Safe. 2 Runs.
Ball 3: Short ball. Billings pulled flat. FOUR.
Nasser Hussain: "This is the Bazball effect. They are 5 down, staring at defeat, but they are scoring at 6 an over. They are trying to disturb the Indian bowlers' lengths. And it's working."
For the next 45 minutes, Edgbaston witnessed mayhem. Stokes and Billings didn't just bat; they launched an assault. They treated the red ball like a white ball. Ravindra Jadeja was brought on to control the rate. He was taken for 14 runs in his first over.
Over 80 (Jadeja): Billings reverse-swept him for FOUR. Then Stokes stepped out and lofted him over long-on for SIX.
Sunil Gavaskar: "I don't believe this. They are hitting the spinner out of the attack on a Day 5 pitch! Jadeja is bowling into the rough, but they aren't letting the ball land. This is high-risk, high-reward."
Virat Kohli looked frustrated. He moved the fielders back. Deep point. Deep square leg. Long on. The singles became easy. The boundaries kept coming.
In the 82nd over, the partnership passed 50 in just 38 balls.
Over 84: Mohammed Shami to Ben Stokes Stokes was on 43. He wanted his fifty. Shami bowled a bouncer. Stokes hooked. He didn't roll his wrists. He hit it flat. It sailed over fine leg. SIX!
Nasser Hussain: "He is taking them on! He was hit Aarav Pathak on the helmet earlier in the match, and now he is hooking Shami into the stands! Ben Stokes is leading from the front!"
Ball 2: Stokes pushed a single. Fifty for Ben Stokes! (48 balls). He raised his bat to a roaring crowd. The Barmy Army was singing again.
Sam Billings wasn't far behind. He was sweeping everything. Shardul Thakur returned to the attack, hoping for another miracle. Billings greeted him with a cover drive for FOUR. Then a pull for FOUR.
Over 88: Shardul Thakur to Sam Billings Billings on 46. Shardul bowled full. Billings drove it through mid-off. FOUR.Fifty for Sam Billings! (60 balls).
Harsha Bhogle: "What a partnership! From 161/5, looking down the barrel, they have counter-attacked their way to a 100-run stand! Both batsmen reaching fifties in quick time. They are making a statement here. The deficit is reducing rapidly!"
Score: Eng 272/5. Partnership: 111 runs off 94 balls.
The cameras cut to Aarav Pathak fielding at deep mid-wicket. He was shaking his head. The game was drifting. The ball had gone soft. The pitch was flat. Kohli walked up to Jasprit Bumrah. "We need to change something," Kohli said. "The ball isn't doing anything. We need reverse swing or a mistake."
Sunil Gavaskar: "India needs to be careful. Yes, they have a lot of runs to play with (still 223 ahead), but the momentum is shifting. If these two bat till Tea, England will start believing. Stokes is dangerous. Billings is dangerous. They need a wicket now."
Nasser Hussain: "England believes. Look at the dressing room. McCullum is watching with his shades on, not moving a muscle. This is exactly what he wants. Chaos. Disruption. India looks rattled for the first time in this match."
The game had turned into a T20 slog-fest in whites. The target was still miles away, but the intent from Stokes and Billings had brought life back into a dying contest.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The umpires signaled that the new ball was available. Virat Kohli didn't hesitate. He took the shiny, hard, new Dukes ball.
The partnership between Stokes and Billings was worth over 100 runs. They were scoring freely, threatening to take the game deep. The new ball was India's best chance to break the resistance.
Kohli handed it to Aarav Pathak. "Swing it," Kohli said simply. "Make them play."
Over 91: Aarav Pathak to Sam Billings
Ball 1: Aarav ran in with fresh energy. The new ball felt good in his hand. He bowled full, shaping away from the right-hander. Billings, respectful of the new cherry, drove firmly to covers. Dot.
Ball 2: Aarav probed the channel outside off. Billings left it alone. Dot.
Ball 3: Billings pushed a length ball to mid-off and took a quick single. 1 Run.
Ball 4: on strike. The battle resumed. Aarav ran in fast. The arm speed was electric. Stokes braced for the 150 kmph thunderbolt. But Aarav held the ball deep in his palm. He bowled an off-cutter. It wasn't just slow; it was a perfect slower yorker at 128 kmph. And it swung away late. Stokes was completely deceived by the change of pace. He was early into his shot, trying to dig it out. The ball dipped under his bat, missing the off-stump by a whisker. Stokes looked back, eyes wide. He tapped the pitch in appreciation.
Michael Atherton: "That is genius. With the brand new ball, you expect pace. He bowls a slower yorker that swings. Stokes had no clue."
Ball 5: Aarav went back to pace. 149 kmph outswinger. Stokes defended solidly. Dot.
Ball 6: Another outswinger. Stokes left it. Dot.
Score: Eng 273/5.
Over 92: Jasprit Bumrah
Bumrah bowled a tight over from the other end, conceding just 2 runs. The scoring rate, which had been flying, suddenly dropped. The new ball was doing just enough to keep the batsmen honest.
Over 93: Aarav
Aarav Pathak returned. He sensed Stokes was getting restless again. The dot balls were building up.
Ball 1: Stokes on strike. Aarav bowled full and wide. Stokes couldn't resist. He threw his hands at it. A flashing cover drive. The ball flew through the gap. FOUR.
Ravi Shastri: "He releases the pressure! A bit too wide from Aarav, and Stokes pounces. He moves into the 60s."
Ball 2: Aarav corrected his line immediately. Fourth stump. Shaping away. Stokes defended to point. Dot.
Ball 3: Aarav went wider on the crease. Angled in, held its line. Stokes played inside the line. Beaten. Dot.
Ball 4: Outswinger again. Stokes leaned forward and defended to mid-off. Dot.
Sunil Gavaskar: "This is a setup. Last 6 balls moving away or holding the line. Stokes is getting comfortable with that angle. Watch out for the nip-backer."
Ball 5:Aarav walked back to his mark. He wiped the ball. He looked at the leg stump. He ran in. 152.6 kmph. He didn't bowl the outswinger. He bowled the Inswinger. It pitched on off-stump and jagged back sharply into the left-hander. Stokes, expecting the ball to leave him, planted his front foot across. He realized too late that it was coming back in. He tried to flick across the line. He missed. THUD. The ball smashed into the front pad, right in front of middle and leg. Aarav turned around, screaming. "HOWZAAAAAT!"
The Umpire, Richard Kettleborough, took a long look. He raised his finger. OUT!
Ravi Shastri (Booming): "HE'S GOT HIM! The setup works perfectly! Three outswingers and then the big inswinger! Stokes is trapped plumb in front! The captain goes! Aarav Pathak breaks the 100-run stand! India are back in it!"
Stokes thought about reviewing. He chatted with Billings. "It looked straight, mate," Billings shook his head. Stokes walked off.
Ben Stokes lbw b Aarav 60 (78)Score: Eng 277/6
Ball 6:Stuart Broad walked out. Aarav greeted him with a 150 kmph bouncer. Broad ducked. Dot.
End of Over 93.Score: Eng 277/6.
Michael Atherton: "That is high-class bowling. He set him up beautifully. Stokes was playing for the swing away, and Aarav brought it back at pace. The new ball has done the trick. India needs 4 wickets. England needs... well, a miracle."
Sunil Gavaskar: "The door is open now. Billings is the last recognized batter. Then it's the tail. Aarav Pathak has turned the game again."
The Indian team huddled around Aarav, high-fiving. They knew the importance of that wicket. The Bazball charge had been halted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The wicket of Ben Stokes had sucked the oxygen out of Edgbaston. The Barmy Army, usually vocal until the last ball, had fallen silent. The score read 277/6. They were still 218 runs adrift. The "Bazball" dream was dying a quick death against the relentless Indian pace attack.
Virat Kohli sensed the finish line. He didn't relax. He brought his strike bowlers back in short bursts. Jasprit Bumrah, stood at the top of his mark.
Over 94: Jasprit Bumrah to Stuart Broad
Nasser Hussain: "Stuart Broad walks out He can hit a long ball, but against Bumrah with the tail exposed? It's a mismatch. India can smell the Beer of the victory. They know history is just four good balls away."
Ball 1: Bumrah ran in with that stuttering, deceptive run-up. He bowled a searing yorker first up. Broad jammed his bat down. Inside edge onto the pads. Dot.
Ball 2: Bumrah banged it in short. Directed at the throat. Broad fended it off awkwardly, eyes off the ball. It fell short of short leg. Dot.
Ball 3:Bumrah didn't mess about. He went full and straight. 146 kmph. Broad backed away to leg, trying to create room to smash it. The ball tailed in late. It dipped under the swinging bat. CRASH. The leg stump was uprooted and cartwheeled towards the keeper.
Harsha Bhogle (Ecstatic): "TIMBER! Jasprit Bumrah cleans him up! Too fast, too full, too good! Stuart Broad goes for a duck! The Nighthawk is grounded! India are three wickets away from glory!"
Stuart Broad b Bumrah 0 (3)Score: Eng 277/7
Matty Potts walked out. He looked terrified. Sam Billings, at the other end, was on 50. He knew he was the last line of defense.
Over 95: Mohammed Siraj to Sam Billings
Sunil Gavaskar: "Siraj comes back. He has been the workhorse. Billings has to farm the strike now. He cannot expose Potts to this quality of bowling."
Ball 1: Siraj bowled wide of off. Billings drove to deep cover. He refused the single. Dot.
Ball 2: Siraj went straighter. Billings whipped it to deep mid-wicket. Again, no run. Dot.
Ball 3: Billings tried to manufacture a shot. He went for the scoop. Siraj saw him moving and bowled a slower ball into the pitch. Billings was early. The ball hit the toe end of the bat and popped up in the air towards mid-off. Aarav Pathak, fielding at mid-off, ran forward. He dived forward, fingers under the ball. But it fell just short. 1 Run. (They had to run).
Ball 4: Matty Potts on strike. Siraj steamed in. He bowled a bouncer. Potts ducked blindly. The ball didn't rise as much. It hit his shoulder. Dot.
Ball 5: Siraj to Potts. Potts survived a length ball.
Ball 6: Siraj bowled a perfect outswinger. Beaten.
Over 96: Jasprit Bumrah to Sam Billings
Billings was on strike. He decided to go down swinging.
Ball 1: Bumrah bowled length. Billings stepped out and tried to loft it over long-on. He didn't get the distance. The bat turned in his hand. The ball swirled in the air. Mohammed Siraj, at long-on, settled under it. He took it calmly and threw the ball into the ground in celebration.
Nasser Hussain: "That is the end of the resistance! Sam Billings holes out! He fought well for his fifty, but the mountain was too high. Jasprit Bumrah has another one! 8 down! The end is nigh!"

Ball 2: Bumrah to Leach. 148 kmph. Full, swinging into the pads. Leach tried to flick. Missed. Hit on the toe. "HOWZAT!" The finger went up instantly. Leach reviewed. It was more out of hope than belief.
DRS: Pitching: In Line. Impact: In Line. Wickets: Hitting. OUT.
Harsha Bhogle: "Three Reds! Bumrah is on fire! Two wickets in two balls! He is on a hat-trick! Jack Leach goes for a golden duck! England 9 down! One ball away from the series win!"

Ball 3: Bumrah ran in. The crowd roared. He bowled a searing yorker aimed at the base of off-stump. Anderson, with all his experience, managed to get his bat down. Inside edge onto the boot. It squirted away to point. They scampered a single. No Hat-Trick.
Over 97: Mohammed Siraj to Matty Potts
Siraj had the ball. He wanted the final glory. Virat Kohli clapped. "Last one boys! Finish it!"
Ball 1: Siraj bowled full. Potts drove to mid-off. Dot.
Ball 2: Siraj went short. Potts fended to short leg. Dot.
Ball 3: Siraj went wide of the crease. He angled it in full. Potts tried to drive through covers. The ball moved away late off the seam—reverse swing at 85 overs old. It beat the outside edge. It smashed into the off-stump. The bail flew towards slip.
Harsha Bhogle (Voice soaring with emotion): "BOWLED HIM! SIRAJ FINISHES IT! INDIA HAS CONQUERED EDGBASTON! They have beaten England in England! A series victory to cherish forever! 3-1! History has been rewritten in Birmingham!"
Sunil Gavaskar: "Look at the scenes! Virat Kohli is jumping! Aarav Pathak is hugging Bumrah! This is a special team. They came here last year, they dominated. They came back this year, and they finished the job. A comprehensive victory by 216 runs!"

The Indian team huddled in the middle. Virat Kohli, the captain who started this journey, hugged Jasprit Bumrah and Aarav Pathak. "We did it," Kohli screamed over the noise. "We f***ing did it!"
Aarav, holding a stump, looked at the scoreboard. Series: 3-1. He had played a massive part in it. Player of the Series most probably, and now a match-winning all-round performance in the decisive Test.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The moment Mohammed Siraj rattled Matty Potts' stumps, the Edgbaston crowd—dominated by the Bharat Army—erupted. The Indian players didn't just celebrate; they unleashed two years of pent-up emotion.
Virat Kohli led the charge, sprinting to the middle to hug Siraj. Aarav Pathak and Jasprit Bumrah embraced, the two architects of England's destruction. Even Rahul Dravid, usually stoic, was seen high-fiving Paras Mhambrey with vigor on the balcony.
The English team, dejected but gracious, lined up for the handshakes. Ben Stokes shook Aarav's hand. It was brief, firm, and devoid of the earlier hostility. "Well played," Stokes muttered. "Well played," Aarav nodded back. The animosity stayed on the pitch.
The podium was set up on the outfield. The Pataudi Trophy sat gleaming in the center. Nasser Hussain stood with the microphone, ready to wrap up a historic summer.
Nasser Hussain: "Ladies and gentlemen, what a Test match, and what a series! It started in Nottingham in 2021 and finishes here in Birmingham in 2022. India has conquered England 3-1. A phenomenal achievement."
He invited the match officials and the runners-up captain. Ben Stokes: "We were outplayed. 416 (India's 1st innings) was a big score, but we let them get away. Chasing 495 was always going to be tough. Credit to India, their bowlers were relentless."
Nasser Hussain: "Now, let's get to the awards. The Player of the Match. He came in when his team was 98/5 and played an innings for the ages. For his scores of 146 and 57... Rishabh Pant!"
Pant walked up, grinning ear to ear, doing a little jig. Nasser: "Rishabh, incredible hitting. Did you ever feel pressure?" Pant: "Not really, Nasser. I just see the ball and hit it. The team needed runs, and Jaddu bhai (Jadeja) was there with me. I enjoy playing in England. The crowd is fun."
Nasser: "You certainly entertained them."
Nasser Hussain: "And now, the Player of the Series. This young man played only 4 matches out of the 5, but his impact was colossal. He scored 517 runs, and he took 26 wickets with the ball. He is the complete package. Ladies and Gentlemen, Aarav Pathak!"
A huge roar went up. Aarav walked up to the podium, looking fresh despite bowling his heart out. He accepted the cheque and the medal and a bottle of Champagne.
Nasser Hussain: "Aarav, phenomenal numbers. 517 runs and 26 wickets. You seem to love English conditions."
Aarav: "I do, Nasser. The ball swings, which helps my bowling, and if you apply yourself batting, you get value for shots. It's been a long series, spanned over two years, but to come back here and finish it like this... it's special."
Nasser: "That battle with Stokes. You seemed fired up."
Aarav (Smiling): "Test cricket is hard. Passions run high. We both wanted to win. It stays on the field. I'm just happy I could contribute to a historic win."
Nasser Hussain: "Finally, the captain of the Indian team. He started this journey as captain, and he finishes it as a winner. Virat Kohli!"
Kohli walked up, the crowd chanting his name.
Nasser: "Virat, 3-1 in England. This must be right up there."
Kohli: "It's top of the pile, Nass. We wanted this badly. We were 2-1 up, and we didn't want to just draw. We wanted to win. The character the boys showed... Pant, Jadeja, Aarav, the bowlers... it's a team effort. I'm proud of this unit."
Virat Kohli walked over to the Pataudi Trophy. He picked it up. He didn't hold it long. He walked straight to the group and handed it to the youngest and the newest member present Shubman Gill, Mohammad Siraj and Aarav Pathak
"CHAMPIONS!"
Kohli roared, and the champagne corks popped. It was a shower of fizz and joy. Aarav Pathak was drenched immediately by Shardul Thakur. Rishabh Pant was doing a somersault on the grass. Ravindra Jadeja was doing his sword celebration with a stump.
The team posed for the photographs—the "Class of 2022"—the team that conquered England.
The celebration moved inside. The music was blasting—Punjabi beats mixing with Bollywood hits. Aarav sat in the corner for a moment, a medal around his neck, a bottle of champagne in his hand. He looked at the chaos. Rohit Sharma was on a video call from India, cheering with them. Rahul Dravid was smiling, content in the background.
Aarav took a sip. It tasted like victory. He pulled out his phone. One message to Shradha. "We did it. Coming home."
The English summer was conquered. The world was watching. And Aarav Pathak was standing on top of it.
