Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Ascent to Tier 3

The parasitic leash was pulling tighter with every passing second, and Ralph was unraveling.

Inside the grand corridors of the Zaqor Manor, the atmosphere was suffocating. The Winter Trials at the Royal Academy were a mere day away, yet the golden child of the family could barely lift his silver-tipped wand. His skin had turned a sickly, translucent grey, and dark, bruised hollows sat beneath his bloodshot eyes. The Aetheria Rose Pendant rested against his chest, its emerald pulsing with a frantic, stuttering light as it desperately tried to draw mana from Ralph's already depleted core to feed the insatiable, invisible Ironwood parasite coiled within its silver links.

"I don't understand," Ralph gasped, his voice trembling as he collapsed onto the velvet sofa in Rrejy's study. "Father... my mana. It feels like it's being poured into a bottomless pit. Every time I try to consolidate my light, it just... vanishes. I feel so cold."

Rrejy paced the room, his fierce eyes wide with a mixture of anger and rising panic. He had invested everything into Ralph's ascension. To have his golden boy wither on the very eve of the Royal Trials was a humiliation he could not bear.

"We have summoned the finest healers in the province," Tere murmured, her voice tight, her serene mask completely gone. She stood by the window, her pale-violet silks rustling as her fingers gripped her teacup so hard the porcelain creaked. "They claim his core is perfectly healthy, yet completely empty of ambient energy. It makes no sense. It is as if some unseen entity is drinking him alive." Her cold eyes suddenly flickered, a dark suspicion crossing her mind, but she dismissed it. No. The hollow shell is magicless. It cannot be him.

At the back of the room, kneeling by the hearth to sweep away the cold ashes, Nard kept his head bowed, his shoulders slumped in his perfected, pathetic facade. Beneath his tattered sleeves, his hands were steady. He could feel the violent, rhythmic pulses of Ralph's light mana rushing through the void, flowing directly into the spinning rings around his own heart.

Yes, keep struggling, Ralph, Nard thought, a cold, silent laughter echoing in his mind. The more you fight to rebuild your power, the more you feed the crucible.

When the night finally fell, plunging the manor into a tense, anxious silence, Nard slipped past the distracted guards and boiled into the freezing, mist-shrouded ravines.

Inside the secluded cave, the air hummed with a terrifying frequency. Beru stood in his human form, his amber eyes glowing with an ancient, golden intensity as he watched Nard approach.

"Tonight is the night, Nard," Beru's deep baritone vibrated through the stone chamber. "The parasite has siphoned enough raw light mana from your stepbrother to push your dual-core to the absolute precipice. But the transition to Tier 3 is unlike anything you have faced. You are no longer just expanding your pathways; you are merging them."

Nard sat cross-legged on the cold stone, his breathing deep and measured. "How do we merge them?"

"To reach Tier 3, you must force the two opposing, reverse-spinning rings of your core—the destructive white light and the restorative emerald nature—to collapse inward," Beru explained, stepping closer. "They must fuse at the center of your heart, forming a single, self-sustaining vortex. We call it the Void Crucible. Once the crucible is forged, you will no longer need to manually suppress your magic. The vortex itself will naturally inhale and lock away your mana, making you completely invisible to passive detection, while allowing you to cast silently and siphon effortlessly without any physical strain."

Beru's expression turned deathly serious. "But the pressure of the fusion is absolute. If your focus wavers for even a millisecond, the conflicting forces of life and destruction will detonate inside your chest. It will not just shatter your pathways; it will erase your very soul. Are you ready?"

Nard looked up, his eyes burning with a cold, triumphant clarity. "I have spent my entire life in the shadows of their contempt. I did not survive their cruelty just to die in this cave. Let's begin."

"Very well," Beru muttered. He raised both hands, unleashing a massive, golden barrier of isolating mana that sealed the cave, protecting Nard's upcoming breakthrough from the manor's warding stones. "Begin the collapse. Push the parasite to its absolute limit."

Nard closed his eyes and plunged deep into his inner world.

Near his heart, the dual-nature Tier 2 core spun at a blinding speed. Using his willpower as a vice, Nard grabbed the outer emerald-nature ring and the inner white-light core, forcing them to stop their reverse rotations.

Immediately, an excruciating, bone-shattering agony slammed into his nervous system.

Nard's body convulsed violently, a strangled gasp escaping his lips as his veins bulged against his skin. It felt as though his entire chest was being ground between two tectonic plates of molten glass and ice. The opposing energies, suddenly stripped of their balance, fought viciously against the compression, lashing out against his scarred pathways. Faint, white-emerald sparks began to leak from his pores, singeing his tattered tunic.

"Do not let them scatter!" Beru's voice roared in his mind, echoing like thunder. "They want to tear you apart! You are the warden, Nard! Force them into the void at the center of your heart!"

Nard ground his teeth, blood trickling from his nose and ears. The pain was blinding, a suffocating heat that threatened to drag him into unconsciousness. But in the depths of the agony, he reached out through the invisible leash of the Ironwood parasite.

In the Zaqor Manor, Ralph suddenly let out a high-pitched, terrified shriek, clutching his chest as he collapsed to his knees on the floor of his room. The Aetheria Rose Pendant flared with a blinding, desperate emerald light.

Siphon! Nard commanded.

An absolute, terrifying torrent of pure, purified light mana was ripped from Ralph's core, surging through the void and slamming into Nard's chest.

The massive influx of external energy was the final catalyst. Nard grabbed the raw, stolen power and used it as a hammer, smashing the white and emerald rings together into the absolute center of his heart.

FUSE!

For a fraction of a second, Nard's heart stopped. The universe went entirely silent, the air in the cave freezing into absolute stillness.

Then, a profound, resonant hum—like the tolling of an ancient, cosmic bell—vibrated through the stone walls of the cavern.

A majestic, dual-layered vortex of deep emerald and pristine, white-hot silver snapped into place at the center of his chest. It spun silently, smoothly, and with an effortless, terrifying speed. The excruciating pain vanished in an instant, replaced by a rushing, cool wave of absolute, revitalizing majesty.

Every single scar on his magical pathways was instantly overwritten, replaced by thick, highly conductive channels of shining, silver-green light. His senses expanded to a degree he had never thought possible. He could feel the heartbeat of the small, scarred bird perched on the ledge; he could trace the exact path of the freezing wind howling through the ravines miles away.

He had done it. He had consolidated a dual-nature Tier 3 core. He was a Tier 3 Weaver.

The dual vortex spun effortlessly, its natural vacuum immediately drawing all excess mana back into his heart. The glowing sparks on his skin vanished, leaving him looking completely magicless, empty, and hollow to any outside observer. The suppression was no longer a strain; it was his default state.

Nard slowly opened his eyes. They were no longer dull and vacant. They burned with a sharp, cold, and absolute authority.

Beru looked down at the young weaver, a profound, silent awe softening his ancient features. He slowly lowered his hands, dissolving the golden barrier.

"A Tier 3 Void Crucible," Beru whispered, his voice trembling slightly with pride. "You have accomplished what the modern mages would deem impossible, Nard. You are no longer just carrying the storm. You are the storm."

Nard stood up, his posture straight, his movements carrying a lethal, effortless grace that had been completely absent just hours before. He adjusted his worn tunic, his gaze turning toward the distant, dark silhouette of the Zaqor Manor.

"The Winter Trials are tomorrow," Nard whispered, his voice cold, calm, and absolute. "They wanted to showcase their golden child to the kingdom. Tomorrow, I will show them what happens when the hollow shell finally breaks."

Beru reverted back into the form of the small, scarred bird, landing lightly on Nard's shoulder. Together, they stood at the entrance of the cave, watching the first light of dawn begin to bleed over the horizon, casting a long, sharp shadow toward the tomb of his past.
