Chapter 1 - Last Human

Eighty years had passed since the world succumbed to the zombie apocalypse, and for seventy of those years, I had fought tooth and nail against the relentless undead. Now, at the age of ninety, I found myself in a dilapidated bunker, surrounded by the echoes of a world long gone. The concrete walls felt like a tomb, and I was its last occupant.

I'm on my deathbed now, the weight of decades pressing down on me like the shadows of the past. My name is Eli, and my body, once strong and agile, has become frail and worn. I can hear the faint groans of the undead outside my makeshift shelter, a constant reminder that danger is never far away.

As night falls, the moon casts a ghostly glow through the cracks in the walls. I take a moment to reflect on my life. I remember the day everything changed. It was a sunny afternoon when the first reports came in—people rising from the dead, attacking anyone in their path. I lost my wife, Sarah, in those early days. She was the reason I fought so fiercely, the reason I never gave up.

Over the years, I've seen countless friends fall, their lives extinguished in a heartbeat. I've lost entire communities, fought in battles where the odds were overwhelmingly against me. Yet here I am, still breathing, still holding onto the hope that one day humanity might rise again.

Tonight, I know I can't escape what's coming. My body is failing, and the pain is growing sharper with each passing moment. I clutch my old rifle, the weight of it familiar. It has served me well through the years, a faithful companion in the darkest of times.

Suddenly, I hear them—the shuffling footsteps, the guttural growls of the undead. They're closer now, drawn by the scent of life. I can feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, a final surge of fight surging within me. I stand up, leaning heavily against the wall, my breath ragged but determined.

As the door creaks open, a horde of zombies lurches into the room, their decayed faces twisted in hunger. I raise my rifle, hands trembling but resolute. "Come on, you bastards!" I shout, my voice cracking.

I pull the trigger, and the rifle barks, echoing in the silence of the night. One by one, I take them down, my heart pounding with each shot. Each bullet is a tribute to those I've lost—Sarah, my friends, everyone who believed in a better future.

But there are too many of them. They come in waves, overwhelming me as I fire until my ammunition runs dry. I feel the cold hands of the dead grasping at me, pulling me down. I fight, but my body can't keep up with my will.

As they drag me to the ground, I think of Sarah again. I remember her laughter, her warmth, and the way she used to hold me close. In that moment, I find a strange sense of peace. I've fought so hard, for so long. If this is the end, then I will meet it with the same courage I've held onto all these years.

With my last breath, I whisper, "I'm coming, Sarah."

The darkness envelops me, and in those final moments, I feel a flicker of hope—hope that my fight, my love, and my spirit will be remembered. Even in a world consumed by the undead, the essence of humanity cannot be extinguished so easily. The last human may fall, but the fight for life continues, waiting for a new dawn.
