Chapter 776 - Chapter 776: The Avengers Press Conference

As a very typical Hollywood commercial blockbuster, The Avengers unprecedentedly brought together a group of superheroes.

In the past, superhero films were basically centered on individual heroes. A series like X-Men was an exception, because the X-Men storylines were closely interconnected.

However, later on, 20th Century Fox still produced a solo Wolverine film. The most important reason was that the extremely high salaries of the X-Men actors were becoming too much for 20th Century Fox to bear.

That said, the X-Men series had a problem: from the very beginning, there was no complete long-term planning. This led to chaotic storylines later on, and even some contradictions.

When Marvel Studios first planned the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gilbert emphasized that they should try their best to avoid this situation.

The construction of the world view had to be as clear and unified as possible, rather than having a different setting for every film. Of course, this was all within a single universe.

If it involved the multiverse, Gilbert felt that it would be overly chaotic and difficult to handle.

However, it was not yet time for that. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still in a rising phase, and audiences around the world were extremely curious about the concept of the MCU.

This press conference attracted media outlets from all across the United States.

More notably, many online media outlets also participated in this press conference, such as Entertainment News Network and Hollywood News Online, which were relatively large online news platforms.

The iPhone 4 had already been released, and mobile internet development was about to accelerate rapidly. The influence of the internet was growing stronger by the day.

Just as radio replaced newspapers, and television replaced radio, the internet would sooner or later replace all traditional media and become the new media platform.

Fortunately, Gilbert had laid out his internet media strategy very early on. Through various investments, his internet company controlled a considerable number of online media outlets.

More importantly, Gilbert owned the largest video-sharing website and the largest social networking site in the United States. With the rise of smartphones, websites that could previously only be used on computers were now accessible on mobile devices.

Of course, they could also be used in the era of feature phones. But the extremely long loading times and crude interfaces meant the experience was still inferior to that on PCs.

At the press conference, Gilbert talked about his reasons for directing The Avengers.

"I remember the first time I met Scarlett, she showed me her treasured collection—a full set of superhero comics."

Gilbert's face was filled with nostalgia. "From that moment on, I realized that superhero culture is a part of North American popular culture.

That made me start to take an interest in superhero films, and I'm very happy to be able to direct this movie."

A reporter from Entertainment News Network asked, "Director Gilbert, could you talk about the differences between Marvel and DC?

"We all know that you also directed Batman and created The Dark Knight, a work with extremely high critical acclaim.

"How did you manage to surpass The Dark Knight?"

"That's a good question."

Gilbert smiled and said, "This question is like asking about the difference between Greek tragedy and Shakespearean drama—they share the same heroic narrative bloodline, but their paths are completely different.

Usually, when we watch DC superheroes, we feel their divine aspect. In other words, DC's superheroes are perfect and without flaws. But Marvel's superhero films are completely different. Tony Stark is flirtatious and sharp-tongued, Steve Rogers is old-fashioned and outdated, Black Widow is mischievous, and so on.

I try to find common ground between the two superhero film series, and I believe the film will not disappoint."

In fact, after The Dark Knight achieved tremendous success, Marvel Studios' executives had once initiated a round of discussions, mainly about whether Marvel should move closer to The Dark Knight's style. The idea was ultimately vetoed by Gilbert.

The reason was simple: the market only needs one The Dark Knight. Any more would be redundant.

In his previous life, The Dark Knight Rises also significantly toned down realism and seriousness in terms of style.

Clearly, Nolan understood that making another Dark Knight-style film—regardless of critical reception—would almost certainly result in a box office explosion, the kind of explosion that goes in the opposite direction.

Several actors also spoke about their excitement at starring in The Avengers. Robert Downey Jr. said, "I'm very excited to continue playing Tony Stark.

This role means something different to me. On my way to the press conference today, I ran into a few kids holding Iron Man masks.

That made me realize the symbolic and inspirational meaning of superheroes.

Of course, all of this is thanks to Gilbert, Kevin Feige, and Jon Favreau for their outstanding work, which gave me the opportunity to portray this superhero on the big screen."

Robert Downey Jr. had also appeared in Gilbert's film Inception this summer, playing the character Fischer.

In his previous life, this role was originally played by Cillian Murphy, the leader of the Peaky Blinders, a British actor. However, Gilbert did not include the British faction storyline and instead chose Robert Downey Jr.

The facts proved that Robert Downey Jr.'s performance was excellent. This former Hollywood rogue had now clearly become a rising A-list star.

Chris Evans also talked about his feelings regarding playing Captain America: "Steve Rogers is a soldier who wakes up after sleeping for seventy years. He's outdated and old-fashioned, doesn't know how to use email, can't understand pop music, and doesn't know what the internet is.

But he has outstanding leadership abilities and is the team core that binds the entire Avengers together."

Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Jeremy Renner also talked about their understanding of their characters and their feelings, expressing their excitement about being part of the film.

As the only female superhero in the entire Avengers lineup, Black Widow was undoubtedly the key figure connecting the whole team.

Naturally, her actress, Scarlett Johansson, also received significant media attention.

Scarlett looked at Gilbert with gentle eyes and expressed her feelings: "I was on Gilbert's film sets when I was very young, so I know what that feeling is like.

If you ask where the best job in the world is, it must be on Gilbert's film set.

So I didn't hesitate to continue playing Black Widow, and I've always kept up my training and maintained my figure. I personally perform many of the action scenes."

Although Black Widow never had a solo film of her own, her substantial screen time in several superhero movies had already earned her considerable popularity.

It was also this role that pushed the once art-house girl Scarlett into Hollywood's top tier.

Among the women of Melon Manor, Naomi Watts and Cameron Diaz had gradually retreated behind the scenes, only choosing to appear in films they were truly interested in.

Charlize Theron and Jennifer Connelly were both core mainstays, maintaining their positions as first-tier actresses.

Anne Hathaway, after the The Lord of the Rings series, shifted toward art-house films, preparing to build momentum for her future Best Actress Oscar.

Ivanka was Gilbert's assistant on the business side, and many confidential matters were handled by her.

Avril Lavigne focused on her singing career. After releasing a new album, she went on a global concert tour this year, with explosive box office performance.

Gilbert assigned Avril Lavigne a team of private doctors and health experts to prevent her from repeating past mistakes.

That left Scarlett and Emma Watson, the two younger ones. Relatively speaking, Emma Watson was still very young. Scarlett's career development was currently smooth and successful, drawing widespread envy.
