Chapter 1 - chapter one

Emilia pov

Fishers University, a bustling hub of youthful energy, where dreams were chased, and futures were shaped. I, Emilia Gray, navigated the crowded hallways, my eyes fixed on the floor, avoiding the gazes of my peers. It was a typical day, like any other, yet the sense of isolation lingered, a constant companion.

As an orphan, I'd grown accustomed to being alone. My parents' absence had left an unfillable void, a hollow echo that resonated through every moment. I'd learned to channel my emotions into music, finding solace in the melodies that flowed from my soul.

My introverted nature made it difficult to connect with others. I'd tried, oh, how I'd tried, but relationships always seemed to wither away, like autumn leaves in the harsh winter winds. Friends would drift apart, and romantic interests... well, they'd often meet with unfortunate ends.

A shiver ran down my spine as I recalled the last guy I'd liked, Jake. He'd been charming, with a bright smile and sparkling eyes. But fate had other plans. A tragic accident had claimed his life, leaving me with the haunting feeling that I was somehow responsible.

Was I cursed? Did my presence invite danger? The questions swirled in my mind like a maelstrom, fueling my self-doubt.

I pushed open the door to my psychology class, slipping into the back row as the professor droned on about Freudian theories. My gaze wandered, settling on a sketchbook hidden beneath my notes. I began to doodle, letting my pencil dance across the page, creating a world where emotions flowed freely.

My violin, a faithful companion, waited for me in the dorm room, its strings humming with the secrets I whispered to it. I longed to draw the bow across its neck, to let the melodies wash away my fears and doubts.

The lecture ended, and I gathered my belongings, merging with the river of students flowing into the hallway. The din of conversations enveloped me, a cacophony that made my heart ache. I longed for someone to share my thoughts, my fears, my dreams.

I made my way to my dorm, seeking refuge in the solitude of my room. As I opened the door, a sense of comfort enveloped me. My violin case lay open on the bed, inviting me to pour out my emotions.

I lifted the instrument, cradling it in my arms, and began to play. The melodies flowed like tears, a symphony of sorrow and longing. In this moment, I was free, my heart speaking through the music.

As I played, lost in the melody, the door burst open and Helen, my roommate, strode in. "Ugh, Emilia, can you please stop that noise?" she snapped, her voice dripping with annoyance. "Some of us have actual lives and don't spend all day moping around playing the violin."

I felt a sting from her words, but I tried to ignore her. "Just a few more minutes, Helen," I pleaded.

"No, now," she demanded, her eyes flashing with anger. "And by the way, my boyfriend is coming over tonight, so you'll need to find somewhere else to sleep."

I felt a surge of resentment, but I bit back my retort. Instead, I whispered, "Sorry," and began to pack up my violin.

Helen snorted. "Save it, Emilia. Just get out."

I grabbed my bag and left the room, feeling a mix of emotions: anger, hurt, and frustration. I wandered across campus, unsure of where to go. That's when I remembered the secret room I had discovered a few weeks ago. It was an old, hidden space behind a bookshelf in the library. I had stumbled upon it while searching for a quiet place to study.

I made my way to the library, my heart still racing from the encounter with Helen. I slipped into the secret room, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. It was quiet, peaceful, and mine.

After settling in, I decided to take a walk to clear my head. The hidden lake in the forest beckoned me, its tranquility a balm to my frazzled nerves. I walked along the water's edge, my feet sinking into the soft earth. The trees towered above me, their leaves rustling in the gentle breeze.

I pulled out my violin and began to play, the music flowing from my heart like a river. The notes seemed to dance on the water, creating a mesmerizing melody. As I played, I felt someone watching me. I glanced around, but saw no one. Shrugging it off, I continued to play.

The music swelled, filling the forest with its beauty. I closed my eyes, letting the notes wash over me. Suddenly, I felt a presence behind me. I spun around, but again, saw no one. My heart racing, I packed up my violin and left the lake, wondering if I was just being paranoid.

As I walked back to the secret room, the darkness seemed to press in around me. I quickened my pace, my senses on high alert. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched, that unseen eyes were following me.

I pushed open the door to the secret room, slipping inside with a sigh of relief. The familiar scent of old books and dust enveloped me, calming my nerves. I locked the door behind me, feeling a sense of safety wash over me.

But as I settled into my makeshift bed, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. I tried to distract myself by reading a book, but my eyes kept drifting back to the door. I felt like I was waiting for something, or someone.

As the night wore on, the silence began to feel oppressive. I tried to focus on my breathing, to calm my racing heart. But my mind kept wandering back to the lake, to the feeling of being watched.

Suddenly, I heard a faint noise outside the door. It was soft, almost imperceptible, but it sent a shiver down my spine. I froze, my heart pounding in my chest.

And then, everything was silent. The noise had stopped, and I was left wondering if I had imagined it.

But I knew I hadn't. I knew that someone, or something, was out there, watching me.

I didn't sleep that night, my senses on high alert, waiting for whatever was out there to make its next move.

As I lay there, my mind racing with thoughts of the unknown, I couldn't help but wonder what the next day would bring. Would I be able to shake off the feeling of being watched, or would it continue to haunt me? I drifted off into a restless sleep, my dreams filled with dark shadows and unseen eyes.
