Chapter 778, Looks Like the Investigation Team Got Into a Fight
The Corpse King inside the Mansion Spell was being forcefully dragged out by the skeletons.
The moment it was pulled out through the stone door of the Mansion Spell, the iron plates wrapping around its body disappeared, leaving only the coils of chains.
As soon as the iron plates vanished, the Corpse King seemed to see hope, suddenly bursting out and violently struggling, flinging the skeletons pulling the chains all over the place.
With a crash, they slammed into the surrounding walls.
The skeletons quickly rolled over and stood up, grabbed their axes, and charged forward to start hacking away.
The Corpse King was still bound by the chains and couldn't even take a full step. In the blink of an eye, under the skeletons' hacking, it was knocked to the ground, letting out angry roars.
After more than ten chops, the Corpse King finally calmed down, dragged in bloody into a single cell in the prison.
The cell was about twenty square meters, all supplies and fixtures inside had been cleared out.
The Corpse King was thrown in the middle, and the skeletons followed inside to keep a close guard.
Wu Heng took out the corpse cores and handed them to a skeleton, "Keep feeding it corpse cores."
The skeleton took them, grabbed one from the plastic bag, and stuffed it into the Corpse King's mouth.
"Shut the door." Wu Heng stepped out of the cell and gave the order.
The iron door closed, shutting off any view of what was happening inside.
Unlike the iron bars of prisons in the other world, modern prisons use solid iron doors.
In the middle was a narrow horizontal viewing slot; opening it allowed one to check inside the cell.
The security level was much higher.
...…
After dealing with the Corpse King,
Wu Heng took the skeletons for a tour around several cell blocks.
The prison was divided into different cell blocks, each with a dozen or so types of cells, and cells divided into singles and multiples.
Who got a single cell and who got a multi-person cell, Wu Heng wasn't quite sure.
He figured it might be based on whether they were serious criminals or not.
He opened each cell and looked inside, forming a general idea in his mind.
Leaving the cell blocks, he called Li Yanhong over using the satellite phone, and summoned electrician skeletons and welding skeletons.
In the office,
Wu Heng held the prison map, explaining his renovation plans to the technical skeletons.
After explaining, he sent them off to prepare and be ready to start work at any time.
Once the technical skeletons left, Wu Heng turned to Li Yanhong.
"Is there anything you need me to do?" Li Yanhong asked.
Wu Heng said, "The materials needed for the skeletons to work, you'll need to arrange to have someone deliver them. The personnel need to be reliable, and able to keep secrets."
"Don't worry, I've still got that clay golem you gave me. Anyone who blabs, I'll know," Li Yanhong replied.
Wu Heng thought for a second and added, "Are there a lot of cameras in the warehouse?"
"Quite a few," said Li Yanhong.
"Bring some over, have the skeletons install one in every cell, so we can monitor things later."
"Okay," Li Yanhong agreed, then added, "By the way, do you need smart home stuff? Electric curtains, robot vacuums, things like that—I've got a ton gathering dust in the warehouse."
"Sure, bring some, I'll try out the smart life," said Wu Heng.
Li Yanhong nodded and then said, "Aren't you coming back with me? The skeletons can handle the work here."
"I'll stay for now, no need to waste time on the road."
Seeing he'd made up his mind, Li Yanhong didn't push, just stood up and said, "Let's go, I'll help you tidy up your dorm. So rough and careless, you don't act like a leader at all."
Wu Heng put his arm around her shoulders, walking out together, "That's why you're the best."
"Smooth talker—where'd you learn that?"
They went upstairs, and Li Yanhong helped tidy up the room that hadn't been lived in for a while.
It was late afternoon when Wu Heng stood at the gate, waving as Li Yanhong and the convoy gradually left.
Once he couldn't see them anymore,
Wu Heng returned to the prison and had the skeletons shut the main gate tight.
For the next stretch, Wu Heng completely reorganized the prison's defenses.
Every wall had machine guns and autocannons installed—some facing outwards to defend against enemies, some facing inwards, preparing for future corpse core cultivation.
He stayed with the skeletons until nearly dusk.
Then he set the skeletons to keep working, while he returned to the dorm, and from there back to Gold-Silver Island.
...…
Coming downstairs.
Minnie and Robe were directing skeletons, gathering up the bedding that had been drying in the courtyard.
Seeing Wu Heng come down, Minnie said, "Please wait a moment, Master, dinner will be ready soon."
"Okay. Anything going on at the island these past couple of days?" Wu Heng sat down on the sofa.
Robe immediately ran over, bringing a cup of tea.
Minnie said, "Nothing much here, but this morning Sister Shanaila sent a message through the radio."
Shanaila?
Ever since the auction ended, Wu Heng hadn't contacted Shanaila in a while.
If she was reaching out first, did something happen in Netalei City?
It had been a while since he'd seen Shanaila—truthfully, he did kind of miss her.
"I'll go upstairs and check," said Wu Heng.
Minnie added, "Is there anything Master wants to eat? I'll have the chef add a few dishes."
"Nothing in particular. You just arrange it."
"Okay, Master."
Upstairs, straight into the radio room.
Wu Heng checked each radio log; aside from Philippa's pages of complaints, only Shanaila had left a message.
Wu Heng picked up the mic and tried, "Shanaila, can you hear me?"
Soon, Shanaila's voice came through, "I'm here. Weren't you around this morning?"
"Was out taking care of things, just got back. How are things on your end?" Wu Heng explained, getting straight to the point.
"Everything's fine, just helping the Fifth Princess handle some stuff every day." After a short pause, Shanaila continued, "The Guild's investigation team seems to have made some progress. Got any intel over there?"
Wu Heng said, "Gold-Silver Island is pretty far from there, even if there's news, it wouldn't get here right away. And the investigation team probably wouldn't share intel with me anyway."
Shanaila's tone grew serious, "A batch of Guild members stationed near the kingdom pulled out, rumor is the main investigation team clashed with the church and some hostile forces."
They clashed!
Wu Heng's gaze sharpened.
"Is the info reliable?"
"Not sure, just rumor, but judging from the Guild's movements in Netalei City, it seems possible. 'Brittany' asked me to check if you had any info." Shanaila said.
Wu Heng kept frowning.
From the timeline, the investigation team had probably already made contact with some factions inside the kingdom.
But whether they'd actually fought, there really wasn't a way for him to get word about it.
The only one he'd gotten into the mix was the Flying Fish Pirates' captain, and even then, that was just letting them run loose—not much oversight.
Plus, with them embedded in the church, getting news out was nearly impossible.
"Is Brittany with you?" Wu Heng asked.
Brittany was the Fifth Princess, currently running Netalei City.
"No, if you have something to pass on, I'll let her know later," said Shanaila.
Wu Heng replied, "I don't have any news either. It's really up to you over there—see if you can get any good info."
"Isn't Chief Lilith on the island? She's in charge of Guild intel—she should have something, right?" Shanaila suddenly brought up.
"Lilith, huh…" Wu Heng hesitated.
Hearing the change in tone, Shanaila asked curiously, "What, she left?"
"Still on the island—just, lately she's been mad at me." Wu Heng filled her in on the situation.
Even though he'd given her the motorcycle, she was still all huffy, making Wu Heng feel like he'd given the bike for nothing.
Shanaila was speechless, "You must be the first to ever use the Chief in a publicity stunt."
"Didn't you tell me to promote Gold-Silver Island more?"
"Don't twist it—I never said you could use the Chief for PR." Shanaila denied it, then joked, "Maybe write a will and leave the island to me."
"Heartless woman." Wu Heng snorted.
Shanaila stopped joking, "Keep an eye on your relationships with the chiefs—the church leaders already have it out for you. Add another, and you'll have even more trouble."
"It's not that serious. I already gave her a gift, the relationship can be fixed," Wu Heng said.
Shanaila didn't push, just reminded, "Let's both keep an ear out. If there's any news, let's share."
"Okay."
The two chatted for a while longer, then hung up.
Wu Heng handed the seat back to the skeleton, then went downstairs.
...…
Heading down the stairs.
Andveil and Annette had just come back in from outside.
Dinner was served; everyone sat down at the table to eat.
After they'd filled up a bit,
Andveil put down her fork and said quietly, "Master, Chief Lilith moved into the house you arranged this afternoon."
Renovations were simpler in this world; it only took a few days.
"Are all the appliances installed?" Wu Heng asked.
"Yes, and we tested them—they're all working fine."
Wu Heng put down his fork too, curious, "Did Chief Lilith seem satisfied?"
"She didn't say much—probably satisfied, I guess," Andveil said, not too sure.
Lilith was definitely the quiet type.
For Wu Heng, it was fine—he was only one level behind, and didn't think a level 20 hero was so out of reach.
But to ordinary Professionals, she was like a god.
"It's fine. Minnie, pick out a few gifts, I'll go pay Chief Lilith a visit tomorrow."
"Yes, Master."
After dinner,
The maids went off to the training room.
Wu Heng thought for a second, then picked up the phone and dialed Sheila Grey's number.
On the other end, Sheila answered, "Sheila Grey speaking."
"It's Wu Heng."
"Oh, Wu Heng—what's up?" Sheila's tone instantly softened, losing its usual work sternness.
Wu Heng leaned on the table, "Any intel from Netalei City lately?"
"Nope—did something happen in Netalei City?" Sheila started to sound serious.
"Just asking, no news here."
Sheila relaxed, and complained a little, "You almost scared me. I thought something had gone wrong again."
Wu Heng laughed, "Chief Lilith moved in today. Want to go congratulate her on the new house tomorrow?"
"Sure, let's do it in the afternoon. Should we bring a gift?" Sheila readily agreed.
Wu Heng thought, "I'll handle the gifts. We still have a lot left from what the merchants gave us before."
"Alright, leave it to you then."
"I'll call you tomorrow afternoon."
Hanging up, Wu Heng kept leaning on the table.
Given his relationship with Sheila, there's no way she'd keep news from him.
So there really hadn't been any news reaching Gold-Silver Island.
Guess we'll see if Lilith's got anything tomorrow.
...…
Wu Heng glanced toward the training room.
He went upstairs and back to the study.
In the study, Glenda and Bennie were busy with their own things—still no sign of Xiaoxiao.
Wu Heng sat down and said to Glenda, "Shanaila sent word that the main investigation team might've already gotten into a fight with the church, but it's not confirmed."
Bennie looked over curiously.
Glenda said, "Was it the investigation team led by the church's hero?"
"Probably, but nothing certain," Wu Heng said.
Glenda said, "If it really is the church's hero, then they'll be too busy to mess with Gold-Silver Island."
Wu Heng lowered his voice, "Think he'll get killed out there?"
Glenda understood what he meant and also lowered her voice, "Not likely—maybe just injured."
Both of them started whispering, as if even at home, someone might overhear.
"Should we pray?"
"Pray to who? You want to walk right into their hands?"
"True."
Wu Heng glanced at Bennie, "Xiaoxiao went out?"
Bennie replied, "Yeah, I asked about her friend. Xiaoxiao said her friend likes coming out at night, because of their race."
More of a night person?
Their race?
Wu Heng frowned and looked at Glenda.
Glenda also looked surprised.
On Gold-Silver Island, which races preferred night, and the timing of making friends…
Glenda said, "Want to say something to Xiaoxiao?"
"No need—they can make friends, that's good, as long as she's not a bad person." Wu Heng thought it over.
He was pretty sure it was Lilith.
No idea how they'd become friends with such an age gap.
But it wasn't a bad thing.
At first, Wu Heng hadn't let Xiaoxiao and Bennie get close to Lilith because he was worried about safety.
After all, back then, the two ghosts were a little weaker.
But now, Lilith seemed fine, and he didn't see any problem with Xiaoxiao being around her.
In fact, if Xiaoxiao could really get along with Lilith, it'd be good for his own side too.
Bring everyone a little closer.
Making sure there weren't any problems, Wu Heng got up and said, "Alright, I'm going to bed."
...…
The next day,
In the morning, Wu Heng supervised the skeletons rebuilding the prison.
Li Yanhong brought all kinds of supplies from outside.
For the work, skeletons who could use tools were far more efficient than humans.
And in certain environments, they could still work as normal.
He stayed at the prison until the afternoon, then after Li Yanhong's convoy left, Wu Heng returned to Gold-Silver Island.
He'd promised to visit Lilith with Sheila Grey.
...…
Waiting at the island lord's manor for a bit,
Sheila and Shiyali arrived by carriage, and Wu Heng distributed the gifts he'd prepared.
Together, they headed to Lilith's mansion.
At the door, Wu Heng knocked lightly.
Soon, the gate opened and the neatly dressed old steward peeked out, "Lord Wu Heng, Steward Sheila, Assistant Shiyali."
Wu Heng smiled, "Is Chief Lilith in?"
"Please wait a moment. The young lady is resting, I'll go check," the steward said, then turned back inside.
Soon, he returned and opened the door. "Please, come in."
Wu Heng followed the butler inside.
As soon as he stepped through the door, he saw Lilith sitting on a red antique chair.
Her eyes also looked toward the entrance.
