Chapter 11 - Husband and Wife

At the age of twenty, a time when most young women are just beginning to understand the shape of their own desires, she became the beloved wife of Aiden. From this historic moment forward, her identity was rewritten under the law and the gaze of the heavens; she is now officially known as Kelly Laurdy Buenavista.

It is not common for a wife to take her husband's family name as her middle name, a unique and heavy tradition rooted deep within the ancient, insular customs of the valley. In the folklore of their culture, it is believed that taking the man's family name in the center means being the center itself. Her world is only going to revolve around him from this day on, and he will be the absolute center of everything in her life. It also carries a deeper, more spiritual meaning; it means being a mediator, occupying the quiet middle ground to remain perfectly neutral, balancing his family's volatile bloodline with her own steady grace.

On the other hand, in a striking display of mutual submission that sent a shockwave of whispers through the pews, he takes her family name as his middle name, flipping the tradition to bind their souls equally. He will be known to the village and the courts as Aiden Buenavista Laurdy. Placing her family name as his middle name symbolizes protection, authority, and family identity. It is a public declaration to the world that he carries her heritage as his own shield, promising to defend her lineage as fiercely as his own.

As they exchange these heartfelt vows to each other, the emotional weight in the grand stone church becomes almost unbearable. The thick air, heavy with the scent of burning frankincense and old parchment, seems to vibrate with their words, and the people in the congregation cannot hold back their tears and smiles.

In the very front pew, clad in midnight silk, his mother's voice is trembling and tears are flowing freely down her cheeks, witnessing the wedding of her beloved son. Her usual cold, aristocratic composure completely melts away, replaced by the raw vulnerability of a mother letting go. Beside her, his father, a man notorious throughout Bial for his severe and unyielding demeanor, was so visibly excited for the very first time in his life. His stoic mask shattered, and his profound happiness can be seen shining brightly in his dark blue eyes, which twinkle like stars under a clear night sky.

The unique exchange of wedding rings and names has been witnessed for the very first time in the history of the isolated village. It does not only signify commitment and love to each other; the ceremony is far more than the people have ever expected to happen in Bial. The absolute acknowledgment, honor, respect, and deep devotion between the two families were all witnessed completely by the church and the common people alike. Strangers from opposite sides of the valley find themselves gripping each other's hands, moved by a display of unity they never thought possible.

As they finished exchanging their rings, the sacred ceremony has been concluded by the sweet kiss of the two people. He holds her hand gently, his fingers sliding against the intricate engraving of the veil of aeons ring. Then, in a sudden, breathtaking movement of profound devotion that causes a collective gasp to echo through the hall, he kneels completely before her on the altar steps. Looking up at her through the sheer fabric of her veil, he pulls her close with his strong hand resting firmly on her waist. He tilts his head, lifting the lace, and gives her their first official kiss as husband and wife, a deep, lingering embrace that will be the everlasting symbol of his love, commitment, and burning passion towards her.

As their lips part, the heavy tension of the morning completely breaks. The church doors are thrown wide open, allowing the crisp valley breeze to rush inside, and the beautiful flowers are flying in the air, tossed enthusiastically by the celebrating crowd. Bright red rose petals and pale lilies rain down from the balconies.

In that exact instant, time seems to be slowing down in the sanctuary. For a fleeting, magical moment, the flowers stop midair, suspended in the long pillars of golden sunlight cutting through the stained glass windows. Everyone in the pews is singing, playing traditional stringed instruments, and smiling joyfully, their voices blending into a harmonious wall of sound.

The couple is completely lost in the clouds, oblivious to the roaring crowd and the music of the lute and harp. They stand in their own private universe, breathing in each other's presence, the phantom scent of Lagarte's sweet grass mixing with the rich perfumes of Bial.

The priest then steps forward, his heavy, embroidered sleeves sweeping over the altar as he raises his hands over their bowed heads to give his final, binding blessings.

"With each other you may find happiness. Prosperity and blessings be with your family. Engrave your vows in your heart, and you shall carry them for the rest of your life."
