Saturday came in bright and blustery, the first real wind of the season stripping the last green from the trees and setting the lake to a chop that sparkled and broke all day. Aaron woke to it rattling the windows and lay still, listening, the way he had learned to listen to the house when it spoke. Sophie was awake too, turned toward the window, watching the light move across the ceiling.
"Windy," she said.
"First one of autumn."
She was quiet for a moment. "I like it. The lake gets a personality."
They made coffee and stood at the kitchen window, watching the water toss under the wind. The dock rose and fell with the swell, the white of Benjamin's railing catching the sun between gusts. It was the kind of morning that asked for a decision, so Aaron made one.
"Let's go to town. The market's open."
Sophie looked at him, surprised. "The market's every Saturday. You've never wanted to go."
"I want to go today."
