Chapter 865 - Chapter 866: Bayern Again

Chapter 866: Bayern Again

For Manchester United, the three weeks after the international break promised to be brutally demanding; the schedule packed in six matches, meaning two games every week.

April 3, afternoon: Premier League Round 30, home vs Brighton;

April 6, evening: Champions League quarterfinals first leg, United home vs Bayern Munich;

April 10, noon: Premier League Round 31, away vs Tottenham Hotspur;

April 14, evening: Champions League quarterfinals second leg, United away at Bayern Munich;

April 17, afternoon: FA Cup semifinal, United away vs Southampton;

April 20, evening: Premier League Round 32, United home vs Burnley;

Every match was critical; losing any one could mean elimination on that front.

Three days after beating Brighton, United welcomed giants Bayern Munich, fighting for a ticket to the Champions League last four.

It was a rematch of last season's Champions League final.

Pre-match, Bayern-friendly media shouted "revenge," but United knew Bayern were incomplete: top star Robert Lewandowski was out injured, blunting the attack, and Serge Gnabry's suspension made it worse.

With United at home, confidence leaned red for the first leg, though the home-first-away-second order still stirred doubts about United's chances over two legs.

...

"United down the right attacking…"

"João Cancelo plays it forward to Kylian Mbappé."

"Mbappé on the ball, cross to the back post…"

"Niklas Süle gets there first, uses his body to block Harry Kane; out for a corner."

"United's first corner."

"Bruno delivers, David Alaba meets it first and loops it up."

"Too high, not far—still in Bayern's box."

"Manuel Neuer comes, under pressure—Kane with the glancing header…"

"It's back to the near post… Bruno…"

"It's in!!!!!"

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLL!!!!!"

"Twenty-seventh minute—United score! Kane's flick-on and Bruno with the close-range header into an empty net."

"Neuer's claim failed—United's corner routine was spot on, with smart traffic and movement they clearly drilled."

"Not thirty minutes gone, and Bayern trail by one."

"Hansi Flick looks disappointed; without Lewandowski, he'd clearly invested in defense—but United still took their chance, and again it's Bruno—his sixth goal in seven Champions League matches this season!"

"A textbook display of Bruno's composure and reading in front of goal."

"Kane's flick came out of nothing, but Bruno reacted instantly—snapped a standing header to the left top corner from point-blank range."

...

Despite German press narratives of revenge, Flick dared not be bold; without Lewandowski and Gnabry he was rattled.

Publicly he set the aim: take a draw from Old Trafford—not revenge.

On paper it was a 4-3-3, in practice nine were behind the ball; often only Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting remained up for the counter, with Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman dragged deep.

Bayern's caution spoke volumes of United's attack.

United's test against Bayern's low block would be severe; breaking condensed defenses troubles every elite. Twenty-plus minutes brought almost nothing.

Bruno was smothered by Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich; even he couldn't conjure space against two elite shadows, with Sané and Coman tracking back to make Bayern's shell ironclad.

United looked dominant but created little.

Likewise, Choupo-Moting barely sniffed the ball under United's marking.

Then came the chaos from a corner—Kane's improvised flick—Bruno ghosted and nodded home.

Bayern were suddenly on the back foot.

...

Flick clawed at his jaw and shook his head; the tight brows betrayed the knot in his stomach.

"Not even a real chance, and he still nicked it," he muttered.

The box had been mayhem—nobody could read the bounce—then Kane nodded to the near post and Bruno appeared as if summoned, guiding it up left.

If he'd tried to steer it low, Goretzka might have snuffed it.

"Neuer's charge was rash," Miroslav Klose said.

Flick nodded—true enough.

Worse, Neuer came but didn't clear; for a keeper, that's a costly mistake.

Bayern's defense had been leaky all season—35 conceded in 27 league matches, already a recent-era high with seven to play.

At 35, Neuer wasn't the same as years past—time spares no one.

Flick's blueprint was counterpunch: let United, as hosts and first-leg favorites, take the initiative and then pick them off.

...

But countering only works if you don't concede first.

Park deeper and United will happily nurse a one-goal win—Flick's worst-case.

Push higher? Risk the back line—could they survive?

Bruno, Kane, Marcus Rashford, and Mbappé as a front four, with İlkay Gündoğan lurking—no need to spell out the danger.

"Wait a bit longer," Flick sighed.

All that thinking, and it boiled down to caution.

Klose understood—too early, too risky to open up; better to await an error or a second-half surge.

Bayern were passive—and all because of Bruno's cursed goal.

...

Pundits often slot Bayern alongside United, Real Madrid, and Barcelona at the top echelon; Liverpool and Manchester City had been excellent but less consistent over recent seasons.

The logic? Trophy heft.

Of those four, Bayern lacked a Bruno, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Lionel Messi-level megastar—for all Lewandowski's quality, he sits a notch below the Big Three. Bayern's hallmark is collective excellence at both ends.

After conceding, they stayed compact, countering through Sané and Coman without panic. And early in the second half, United blinked.

A corner—again. Bayern executed a quick routine; Benjamin Pavard hit from the edge; United didn't block in time; De Gea's dive was late; the ball tore through the crowded box toward the back post.

Choupo-Moting charged and redirected the mis-hit into the net.

1–1—Bayern level.

Flick burst with relief. United's back line could wobble too—26 conceded in 30 league games was not vintage Mourinho.

Virgil van Dijk, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw all had elite credentials; this season, Van Dijk and Shaw stayed top-class, but Maguire had errors in him.

Flick smiled—the restart was even, and the path to an away triumph reappeared.

Win at Old Trafford, and the semifinal beckoned.
