Chapter 673: A Personal Grand Slam of Honors

While José Mourinho traveled to UEFA headquarters for the Champions League Round of 16 draw, Bruno Fernandes in Manchester celebrated yet another accolade in his remarkable 2018 campaign.

On December 17 at noon, Bruno accepted the 2017-2018 European Golden Shoe from his home in Manchester. This marked his second consecutive season winning the award. In the 2016-2017 Premier League season, Bruno scored 38 goals in 36 matches, edging out Lionel Messi (37 goals) to claim the Golden Shoe for the first time in his career.

In the 2017-2018 season, Bruno elevated his performance further, netting 41 goals in 38 matches to finish 7 goals ahead of second-placed Messi and secure back-to-back Golden Shoes.

Bruno became only the fourth player to win consecutive European Golden Shoes in the award's points-based era. Thierry Henry (2003-2004 and 2004-2005), Lionel Messi (2011-2012 and 2012-2013), and Cristiano Ronaldo (2013-2014 and 2014-2015) had previously achieved this feat.

In terms of overall Golden Shoe wins, Bruno's national teammate Cristiano Ronaldo remains the record holder in the points-based era, claiming the honor four times (2007-2008, 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015).

Bruno narrowly missed out on his first Golden Shoe in the 2015-2016 season, scoring 39 goals for Udinese in Serie A but losing by a single goal to Barcelona's Luis Suárez.

2018: A Year of Total Dominance

With the Golden Shoe in hand, Bruno completed a historic sweep of personal honors in 2018, achieving a true "Grand Slam." His accolades included:

Premier League: Top Scorer, Assist Leader, PFA Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year, PFA Team of the Year, FWA Player of the Year, Official Player of the Season, Official Young Player of the Season, Official Team of the Season, 3x Player of the MonthChampions League: Best Midfielder, Best Player, Assist Leader, Final MVPUEFA Awards: Best XI, Player of the Year, Midfielder of the YearWorld Cup: Top Scorer, Assist Leader, Golden Ball, Final MVPIFFHS Awards: Best International Goal Scorer, Best Male FootballerFIFA Awards: Best XI, Best Midfielder, The Best FIFA Men's PlayerBallon d'Or: Winner

Bruno was also a finalist for the 2018 Laureus World Sports Award for Best Male Athlete, losing to tennis legend Roger Federer, who claimed the honor for a record fifth time. However, the 2018 award considered performances from 2017. Bruno's achievements in 2018 made him a strong favorite for the next Laureus Award, with odds heavily favoring him over rivals such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Novak Djokovic.

Club World Cup Campaign

On the evening of December 17, Bruno and Manchester United boarded their team plane for the UAE to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament began on December 12, featuring seven teams: champions from each continent and the UAE Pro League champions as hosts.

As UEFA Champions League winners, United entered at the semi-final stage. Their opponent was the AFC Champions League winner, Kashima Antlers, while River Plate (Copa Libertadores winners) faced Al Ain, the host club, in the other semi-final.

This was Bruno's second Club World Cup appearance. In 2015, he helped Udinese win the title, scoring hat tricks in both matches and temporarily becoming the tournament's all-time leading scorer. Cristiano Ronaldo later surpassed him with seven goals during Real Madrid's back-to-back Club World Cup triumphs.

Manchester United vs. Kashima Antlers

On December 19, the second semi-final of the 2018 Club World Cup took place at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

United fielded a rotated lineup with Romero in goal, a backline of Ashley Young, Lindelöf, Smalling, and Cancelo, and a midfield trio of Mata, Fred, and Bruno. Up front, Lingard, Harry Kane, and Mahrez formed the attacking trident. Mourinho sought to manage his squad's energy while comfortably defeating the less formidable opposition.

Kashima Antlers adopted a defensive approach, allowing United to dominate possession from the outset. Bruno, orchestrating United's play, found space in the 4th minute. Mata's perfectly timed through ball bypassed Kashima's defenders and reached Bruno, who surged into the box and calmly slotted the ball through the goalkeeper's legs.

"GOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLL!"

"Bruno Fernandes! The European Golden Shoe winner strikes early to put Manchester United ahead!"

The stadium erupted, with even some Kashima fans cheering for Bruno's brilliance. United led 1-0 after just four minutes.

The match continued with United in control. Fifteen minutes later, Bruno's precise corner delivery set up Lindelöf for a headed assist, allowing Harry Kane to smash the ball into the net for 2-0.

Before halftime, a sweeping move involving Ashley Young, Lingard, and Mata ended with the Spaniard scoring United's third goal. The scoreline read 3-0 at halftime, and United looked unstoppable.

Bruno's Influence and a Commanding Victory

Early in the second half, Bruno's creativity again proved decisive. His pass set up Lingard for a volleyed finish to make it 4-0. Mourinho substituted Bruno in the 60th minute, ensuring his star player remained fresh for the final.

Harry Kane added a fifth goal from the penalty spot in the 88th minute after being fouled in the box. United secured a resounding 5-0 victory and advanced to the Club World Cup final.
