Chapter 21 - Chapter 21:The Man in The Shadows

The first rays of dawn spread across Qinghe Village.

Thin wisps of smoke rose from the rooftops as villagers prepared breakfast.

Inside the Lu family home, Kelly was already awake.

She quietly stirred a pot of porridge while slices of pork steamed beside it.

The rich aroma filled the small house.

Soon, little footsteps echoed from the bedroom.

Lu Chuan rubbed his sleepy eyes.

"Stepmother..."

Kelly turned and smiled.

"Good morning."

The little boy smiled shyly before walking over to the stove.

"What are we eating today?"

"Porridge, eggs, and pork."

Lu Chuan's eyes widened.

"Again?"

Kelly laughed softly.

"As long as you finish everything."

The little boy nodded enthusiastically.

Behind him, Lu Tuan and Lu Cheng entered the room.

Although neither said anything, Kelly noticed they looked healthier than before.

Their cheeks had gained a little color.

The dark circles beneath their eyes were slowly disappearing.

She felt relieved.

Children should grow up healthy.

Not hungry.

---

Outside the house...

A man wearing worn cotton clothes quietly swept the road.

To passing villagers, he looked like an ordinary traveler earning a meal.

No one paid him any attention.

But his sharp eyes never left the Lu family courtyard.

He watched Kelly prepare breakfast.

He watched her divide the meat evenly between the three boys.

Only after every child had been served did she fill her own bowl.

The man frowned.

This wasn't what the anonymous letter had described.

He quietly opened a small notebook.

Observation One:

"Subject feeds the children before herself."

He closed the notebook again.

---

After breakfast, Kelly helped the boys put on their school uniforms.

Lu Chuan stood proudly.

"Stepmother, do I look handsome?"

Kelly smiled.

"The handsomest boy in the village."

The little boy laughed happily.

Lu Tuan rolled his eyes.

"He's going to become arrogant."

Lu Chuan stuck out his tongue.

"I'm already handsome."

Even Lu Cheng couldn't suppress a faint smile.

Kelly watched the brothers teasing one another.

A warm feeling spread through her heart.

This was what a family should look like.

---

Not far away, the hidden observer watched silently.

There was no fear in the children's eyes.

No bruises.

No signs of abuse.

Instead...

The youngest hugged Kelly before leaving for school.

The man froze.

He had investigated countless families.

Children who were abused never acted like that.

They avoided contact.

They flinched.

They feared their abuser.

But Lu Chuan had embraced Kelly willingly.

The anonymous letter...

Was it false?

---

On the way to school, Lu Chuan suddenly stumbled over a stone.

Before he could fall, Kelly caught him.

"Careful."

"I'm sorry, Stepmother."

Kelly gently dusted the dirt from his knees.

"There."

"Much better."

The little boy grinned.

"Thank you."

From behind a large tree, the investigator watched everything.

His expression gradually became thoughtful.

Without realizing it, he opened his notebook again.

Observation Two:

"The children's trust appears genuine."

---

That afternoon, while the children were in class, Kelly went to the village clinic.

She exchanged some herbs for medicine that would strengthen the boys' health during winter.

On her way home, she met an elderly woman struggling with a heavy basket.

Without hesitation, Kelly picked it up.

"Grandmother, let me help you."

The old woman blinked in surprise.

"Kelly?"

"Yes."

"You've... changed."

Kelly simply smiled.

"People can change."

The investigator witnessed everything from across the road.

For the first time since arriving in Qinghe Village...

Doubt appeared in his eyes.

---

That evening, he returned to the small room he had rented.

He lit an oil lamp.

Opened his notebook.

And began writing his first report.

"Day One."

"The anonymous accusations do not match my observations."

"The woman named Kelly cares for the three children."

"She shares food equally."

"The children trust her."

"Further investigation required."

He folded the report carefully.

Tomorrow, it would begin its journey back to the Military District.

Just as he blew out the lamp...

A shadow moved outside his window.

The investigator's eyes turned cold.

Someone...

Had been watching him.
