He first used Mae to create an illusion for all of them, making sure that even if they pursued them in the future, they would end up chasing after the wrong people.
No one came back alive from that battle, so no one knew about his familiars. All Nathan needed to do was to display the heads of the true gods and imply to them that he could take them down whenever he wanted.
