Chapter 240 - 240 - False deity 2

*

If she was to die anyway, stripped of her life's meaning and goals... Who cares if her soul returned to the world tree or whatever. Who cares about all those stupid details? She'll fight this amorphous being claiming to be an old god that could kill any false god... She'll make her eat her words. She's been fighting opponent's stronger than herself since the start, and this will be nothing new. Biologically, her body senses its inferiority, no... Her soul did too. It understood that even within the absurdity of magic and fate it could never match up.

However... Her ego bore hope. Anyone could hold hope and be a reckless fool. It wasn't special in anyway, it's what comes out of it that's special. And that's... Her sheer ego to go toe to toe with anything that stood on two legs. So ascend she did. False deity she will become. Not for anyone's sake, not for Arin, Lastia or Sariel. Not for the world tree. For herself. She had always lived on the basis that her actions 'are for Lastia's sake'. She wonders when she casted that aside. Was the battle with Ledaine so intense that she could no longer remember her goals? Right... She abandoned the vessel, and gave it all up. She gave up that modus operandi for hope.

Now, facing an enemy she could never defeat... She'll give up hope for to preserve her ego. Others would call this pride, and it may as well be, though she wanted far more than that. She wanted for last moments to be grand, she wanted everything to go well, she wanted everything wrong with the world to have disappeared. For false humanity to be true humanity, for her false deity status to be true deity. She was born as an emulation of an abstract concept, like the unknown figure in front of her said, a shadow of a shadow.

Compared to the true world tree holding every realm in existence, she was so far removed that her connection may as well be a coincidence, because it certainly was on the same insignificant level as having the same name. Her sleeves exploded and her dress bloomed into withering petals that wilted and vanished. The same black gloves adorning her delicate hands crunched into tight fists. Her backless dress gently tied around her neck from the front, cutting a sharp curving figure out of the cloth.

Tassels and frills grew out of her gloves as her dress became sleeveless, the large folds of her lower dress opened up and shredded like a blooming flower. At the end it was a short skirt that reached her thighs and puffed up like an upside down rose. Her legs were now uncovered as her tights dissolved. Her heeled shoes became high boots that stopped below the shin.

This realm behaved like the edge of the universe, a place where gods come to do battle. The laws here are that there are no laws, entities that come here have no limits. That's why a false ascension was easy enough to achieve, a true god would have a concept or universal law that they embody, she didn't. She's just Yggdrasil, the false world tree. Nothing more, nothing less.

A pitiful existence that can't be compared to this tiny scrap of an old god.

"Why must an external entity be held to your standards? You mean to tell me the world tree is part of humanity?" (Yggdrasil)

"Which one do you believe came first? The belief that there's a god ruling the sky and earth, or the god itself? Did the belief come about because there is such a god? Or did the god come about through the power of belief?

Humans will claim the former, deities will support the latter. In a way both are right, there is an inexplicable link beyond cause and effect. As long something can be made comprehensible, a concept like the world tree can even be said to be produced by humanity. " (?)

" Produced, be produced by. There is no way to verify, it isn't falsifiable. Existences are entangled but the nature of that entanglement has no truth to it, when the arcane transcends space and time, causality lost its meaning.

To be an envoy of Yggdrasil because I was named as such by my parent, or to be as named by Yggdrasil itself... It's a false line of thinking. There could be multiple answers all along and they are all simultaneously true, the binary of true and false no longer applies and the crux cannot be comprehended by a human mind.

All of this to say... I don't care. The significance of my existence is what I make of it, of my own choosing. " (Yggdrasil)

The frills and tassels of her gloves began to float, clearly concentrating magical energy in her fists. This was a place of punishment and execution, the enemy's Oblivion Magia, but it won't deter her will. As long as she can fight, she will charge headlong into the destined end. That's right, she pointed at the mysterious figure. A mere silhouette of black plastered against an endless white horizon.

"My journey seems to have ended. However that's a given. I was never meant to reach far or achieve much, I only pushed thus far to protect those I love. I am Yggdrasil, the envy of Lastia! The one who had lived a life my creator never could!

That's why for her sake, I would even give her the story. Just because I'm reaching the end, doesn't mean everything was meaningless. Life will never be meaningless, we are meaning itself. My aspirations, my flesh, all that I cherish will fade into the setting sun.

Defeating you isn't the only way to win. " (Yggdrasil)

She gazed straight at her opponent, though her thoughts drifted elsewhere. She has really come far, further than her creator did. She grew so strong she couldn't believe that she'd reach this level one day. Now, she'll set out what she's meant to do. If it's now that she has achieved this much, this 'advance level' Yggdrasil that attempts it, it might really be possible to bring Lastia back. With everything she learned about humans, wishes, conflict, life... She'll emulate the catalyst with her own memories, her own soul.

The catalyst being Lastia's lost corpse. Will this interfere with the cycle of reincarnation? Actually interference would be the best outcome. Let's say there are 2 systems of life and death in this world, one with reincarnation after death and one without, perhaps persisting in heaven or hell as an undead for the rest of eternity. If one system of magic pulls the soul from the reincarnation cycle to revive Lastia, and another pulls her soul from heaven for resurrection, wouldn't there be two Lastias?

The arcane cares not for the process, only the result. Whether the reincarnation cycle, heaven or hell existed before the resurrection takes effect is debatable. It's safer to say that magic itself will create the cycle, heaven, and hell or at least simulate it before ressurecting the target. If these concepts truly exist beforehand, then the magic will do as explicitly stated and pull the soul from such location for ressurection.

That's why... Resurrection is forbidden no matter the place or era. Not only does it violate any ethical dillemas, it also defiles the target life by bending the universe.
