The steamship "Pearl Earring" slowly stopped at Saint Bernard Port on the Seine River. As soon as the gangway was set up, Mrs. Brode eagerly lifted her skirt and stepped out.
First, she excitedly took a deep breath of the river-scented air, then looked towards the distant clean streets and the endless flow of vehicles, exclaiming in her somewhat broken French:
"The newspapers weren't wrong, this place is second only to paradise!"
Her husband lagged behind, grumbling with a frown: "Don't be fooled by the facade; France is full of warmongers..."
The woman immediately glared at him: "I suggest you put aside that unnecessary hostility and prejudice, French troops have even helped us."
"Hmph, everyone knows it's France backing the Flemings. These aggressors have occupied a large part of Southern Netherlands!"
