The current wheat yield in Algiers, after leaving enough for local consumption, is sufficient to feed one-fifth of the French people.

In addition, since last year, the Ministry of Agriculture has been promoting potato cultivation in Tunisia and Tripoli. The climate in these regions is suitable and water resources are abundant; many plots of relatively less fertile land are just left uncultivated for wheat because people are too lazy to bother.

The Ministry of Agriculture encourages people to plant potatoes on these "bad lands," offering subsidies of 3 to 5 francs per mu. There's no need for management throughout the process; when it's ripe, you just go and harvest. Even planting this way yields close to 40% of Europe's average per-area output.
