Prussia, West.
In a brick-red villa south of Stendal, a salon hosted by Mrs. Adenauer was underway.
The theme of the salon was "The Meaning of the German Nation".
"Martin Luther's German Bible allows the farmers of Hesse and the craftsmen of Prussia to read the same proverb; the bells of Cologne Cathedral and the abbey of Rheifenstein ring to the same hymn of 'Christ's Resurrection'!"
A young man, not wearing a wig and dressed in hunting attire, was waving his arms fervently, speaking in excitement: "From Arminius's battle cries in the Teutonic forest to Charlemagne's Frankish Kingdom's iron cavalry in the East, our ancestors have nourished the black earth from the Baltic Sea to the Alps with the same passionate blood!
"Yet now, our language, our legends, even our songs, are cut into countless fragments!
