Chapter 19 - Under the Moonlight

The moon hung high in the night sky as Nozue and I made our way back to the Guild. The forest paths we had traversed earlier were now bathed in silvery moonlight, and the night air was cool and crisp. We walked with a profound sense of accomplishment, our footsteps light and our spirits high, the new World Map and the heavy pouch of silvers safely secured in my Item Space.

The Guild building loomed ahead, its sturdy stone structure illuminated by warm lanterns. As we approached, the familiar hustle and bustle of the Guild's interior became audible. The sound of lively conversations, boisterous laughter, and the clinking of heavy ale glasses filled the air, creating a lively backdrop for our return.

We pushed open the heavy doors, greeted by the warm glow of the hearth and the cheerful chatter of adventurers relaxing after their own long quests. We made our way straight to the reception desk, where Missy was busy organizing a tall stack of stamped papers.

Missy looked up as we approached, her elven ears twitching and her eyes lighting up with recognition. "Kazu, Nozue! You're back! How did the quest go?" Her voice had a slight tremor, betraying a sudden, nervous energy.

Nozue and I exchanged pleased smiles. "We successfully completed the quest," I said, pulling the rolled-up World Map and the pouch of silvers from my dimensional void and setting them on the counter. "Chief Balthar was very pleased with our work."

Missy's gaze shifted to the parchment, her interest immediately piqued. "Is that a World Map?" she asked, trying to sound casual but unable to completely hide her curiosity.

I nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, it is! Chief Balthar gave it to us as a bonus reward. It's an incredibly detailed map of many regions, including our hometown Druzka and other distant countries like Harandur and Soradia."

Nozue puffed out his chest. "We also received two thousand silver coins as part of the reward. The map will be incredibly useful for our future travels."

Missy looked highly impressed. "That's quite a reward for a simple construction and gathering quest. It seems like you both did an exceptional job. I'll make sure to note this highly in the Guild's official records."

As Missy continued to jot down the completion details in her heavy ledger, she noticed a sealed envelope among the papers on her desk. "Oh, Kazu, I almost forgot. You received a Guild notice regarding an update to your registered skills after your recent physical labor."

She handed the envelope to me, her delicate fingers brushing against my hand for a split second. Her cheeks instantly flushed a soft pink, and she quickly looked away, trying desperately to maintain her professional composure.

I took the envelope with a polite smile, completely oblivious to her reaction, and broke the wax seal. As I pulled out the magic appraisal parchment, a familiar tingle rushed through my mind. The paper triggered my internal system, and a series of glowing blue notifications suddenly flooded my vision:

My eyes widened as I read through the floating text. My attention was fully captured by the rapid updates, and a highly satisfied smile grew on my face. My Strength is already at Level 23! The heavy lifting really works. I'm getting closer to unlocking Rage.

Missy watched my reaction with a mix of deep admiration and shyness, her fingers lightly tapping on the wooden desk. "It seems you've received some significant updates. I'm glad to see you're pleased," she said, her voice softening.

Nozue glanced at me, noticing my focused expression but remaining unaware of the invisible system screens. "Everything alright, Kazu?" he asked.

I blinked away the screens, looking up with a massive grin. I carefully folded the parchment and tucked it into my pocket. "Everything is great," I said, my excitement evident.

Missy gave a small, almost imperceptible smile in return. "If you need any further assistance or want to look at new quests tomorrow, just let me know."

We thanked Missy for her continued support. "We'll definitely keep that in mind," I said.

With a final exchange of goodbyes, Nozue and I left the Guild building. As we walked into the cool night air, my renewed sense of excitement about my updated skills and the World Map made the journey ahead feel even more thrilling. Back inside, Missy watched us go, her feelings hidden behind a warm, slightly wistful smile.

The Orphanage

Nozue and I made our way through the dimly lit cobblestone streets of Druzka. The successful completion of our first joint quest had filled us with a deep sense of accomplishment, but our focus was entirely on returning home to rest.

As we approached the large, welcoming building of the orphanage, the sounds of children's laughter and chatter still carried through the night air. Despite the late hour, the atmosphere remained incredibly lively and warm.

Rosalia was inside the main hall, tending to the younger children. She looked up as we walked through the door, her face brightening with a warm, relieved smile.

"Kazu, Nozue! You're back so late!" she exclaimed, wiping her hands on her apron. "How was your quest?"

My physical fatigue was momentarily forgotten in the comfort of home. "We completed the quest successfully! We managed to bring back an entire beast to feed the workers. Chief Balthar was very pleased with our help."

Rosalia's eyes sparkled with immense pride. "That's wonderful to hear. I'm so proud of both of you."

Nozue added eagerly, "We also received a World Map from the Chief! It shows Druzka, Harandur, and even Soradia across the sea! Kazu was amazed to see it."

Rosalia's interest was immediately piqued. "A World Map? I'd love to see it."

I carefully pulled out the map from my Item Space and unfolded it, laying it flat on the large dining table. Rosalia joined us, her gaze tracing the detailed ink lines and borders with deep fascination.

"It's incredible," Rosalia murmured, her finger moving over the distant continents. "You can see how our country connects with all the others. It's a beautiful reminder of the vastness and diversity of the world."

I glanced at her, feeling a profound sense of wonder. "It makes me eager to learn more about these other places. I want to travel there someday."

Rosalia placed a comforting, warm hand on my shoulder. "There's always more to discover, whether through quests or formal learning. I know you'll go far, Kazu."

As we spoke, the younger children of the orphanage gathered around the table, their faces lit with curiosity and excitement. They had stayed up specifically to hear about our adventures, and their enthusiasm was palpable. Nozue and I proudly shared the story of how we used our combined magic to take down the massive Horned Boar. The children listened intently, their eyes wide with awe.

The mood was perfectly lively, but a sudden, violent crash from the kitchen abruptly interrupted the cheerful atmosphere.

Rosalia's face turned pale. "Stay here, I'll go check on that."

"No, wait—" I started, my Murderous Intent Detection skill suddenly flaring with an aggressive, wild energy.

The children huddled close together in fear as Nozue and I exchanged worried glances and sprinted toward the kitchen.

We burst through the swinging doors and found the terrifying source of the commotion. A massive, ferocious Forest Bear—easily eight feet tall on its hind legs—had somehow broken through the back delivery door, desperately knocking over heavy pots and pans in search of food. It roared deafeningly, its yellow eyes glinting with a wild, cornered ferocity.

"Nozue, get the children back to safety!" I ordered, stepping forward. My eyes gleamed with absolute determination.

Nozue didn't hesitate. He quickly ushered the screaming children and Rosalia out of the hallway, barricading the door behind them.

I faced the towering bear, my fists clenched as I dropped into a firm stance.

The beast charged at me, its massive claws swiping through the air.

"Blink!"

I vanished, appearing directly behind its massive bulk. "Fire Pierce!" I blasted a concentrated beam of heat directly into its back.

The bear roared in agonizing pain, whirling around to face me with a bloodthirsty glare. It lunged again, snapping its terrifying jaws.

My movements were blindingly quick and precise. I drew my newly forged artifact dagger, the Wrath of God. Remembering how dangerously destructive my magic could be, I restrained myself. Instead of casting it outward, I channeled Fire Spirit Flare directly into the metal of the blade. The runed dagger ignited, creating a controlled, intense blaze around the steel that lit up the entire kitchen without catching the wooden walls on fire.

The enraged, wounded bear thrashed violently, shattering the wooden prep tables and sending sharp utensils flying.

The kitchen door cracked open slightly, revealing Rosalia's terrified face. "Kazu, be careful!"

My focus didn't waver for a millisecond. I ducked under a lethal claw swipe, gripped the flaming dagger tightly, and activated my newest combat skill.

"Whirlwind!"

I spun with devastating momentum. The flaming blade carved a perfect, blazing arc through the air, slicing deeply into the beast's chest and sending its massive body crashing heavily into the stone wall. The creature let out one final, gurgling roar before collapsing to the floor, completely defeated.

Breathing heavily, I allowed the flames to dissipate and sheathed my dagger, wiping a mix of sweat and soot from my brow.

"It's over," I called out, turning to Rosalia and the children who were anxiously peeking in from the hallway.

Rosalia rushed past the debris and threw her arms around me, her eyes wide with sheer relief. "You saved us again. Thank you, Kazu."

I nodded, returning the hug, though I was visibly exhausted from the adrenaline spike. "Just doing what needs to be done to protect my family."

As the children emerged from their hiding spots, they cheered loudly for me, their initial terror completely replaced by starry-eyed admiration.

The chaotic atmosphere of the orphanage was soon replaced by a different kind of warmth. Working together as a team, Nozue, Rosalia, the children, and I cleaned up the shattered mess in the kitchen and prepared a late-night meal to calm everyone's nerves.

The night was long, but it ended with joyous laughter and stories shared around the repaired table. Rosalia embraced Nozue and me warmly before bed, gratitude and deep pride shining in her eyes. "Thank you for everything you've both done today. It means so much to me, and to all of us here."

With heartfelt goodnights, Nozue and I finally settled into our room. Surrounded by the unwavering love and warmth of the orphanage, I felt a deep, profound sense of contentment as I closed my eyes.

The world outside might be massive, filled with unexplored continents and dangerous adventures, but this house was where my heart truly belonged.
