As the crowd began to murmur and a few hands went up, a sudden hush fell over the room. Everyone's attention shifted to me and the unexpected figure standing at the back.... the centerpiece.
I felt a renewed sense of purpose. This was more than just an exhibition; it was an opportunity to spark conversations and bring attention to the stories that needed to be told.
Margaret and Alec stood by, ready to support me as I prepared to answer the questions and delve further into the meanings and inspirations behind my work.
As the showcase continued, I couldn't shake the feeling that I were being watched. The presence I had felt in the studio seemed to follow me, a constant reminder of the unseen force that had invaded my life. The showcase was a success, but the mystery of the painting and the darkness it represented loomed over me, a shadow that refused to be ignored.
As the evening progressed, a commotion arose near one of the paintings. It was a grotesque piece of myself, which I had deliberately hidden away, never intending for it to be showcased. But Alec quickly stepped in, covering for the unexpected appearance of the artwork.
Margaret and I, both visibly shaken, pulled Alec aside to interrogate him. "How did you manage to cover it up so neatly?" I whispered urgently.
Alec, maintaining his calm demeanor, instantly understood what the question intended, replied, "I overheard your whispers earlier about how this piece was supposed to be hidden. When I saw it displayed here, I knew something was wrong. I didn't want to cause a scene, so I tried to cover for it."
Margaret looked at Alec with a mix of relief and suspicion. "Thank you for stepping in, Alec. But we need to find out who brought this painting out and why."
Alec nodded, his expression serious and eyes narrowing. "Agreed. But there's something even more troubling. Who created this painting with such detailed knowledge of your body, Evelyn? This needs to be addressed immediately."
Margaret coughed and raised her eyebrows at me, causing me to blush. I quickly interjected, "We were only friends, Margaret. Don't let your mind wander south." I could see the hint of a smirk forming on her lips, but I wasn't in the mood for her teasing, and also, she is unaware about our relationship.
I would be embarrassed later about how Alec remembered what I looked like underneath my clothes, especially since there was someone else who knew too, who made this hell of the artwork. More people, unaware of my appearance, could still figure it out by looking at the artwork. I shook off the feeling of dread crawling up my skin from being watched by so many. But this was all for later. Right now, there were more urgent matters to address than explaining to Margaret how Alec knew what he knew. Alec seemed unbothered by the glance Margaret was giving us both.
I glanced nervously at the grotesque painting, then whispered to Alec and Margaret, "If my mother sees this, she will put a tag of stripper on me."
Margaret's eyes widened in shock, but she said nothing, while Alec's expression grew even more serious. "We need to get to the bottom of this," he said firmly. "Whoever brought this painting out had a specific intention, and we need to find out what it is."
Margaret nodded, her face set with determination. "Let's start by questioning the staff and checking the security footage. We need to know who had access to the storage area."
As we moved to investigate, the unsettling feeling lingered. The mystery of the painting appearance and its disturbing accuracy weighed heavily on my mind, but I knew we had to uncover the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it might be...
As we started following him, Alec pulled me aside and his expression darkened.
