Chapter 53 - Preparation

Walking hand in hand with Leah on their beach, Dean wondered when the Volturi would make a move. The news of missing vamps would have reached them by now, and it worried him a bit that their patrols were still limited to the Seattle area.

There was a small chance they could fly under the radar and land somewhere else and sneak up on them, but he found this to be unlikely due to the nature of his enemy. He couldn't see the rulers of the vampires sneaking around like rats. No, the chances they'll come in loud, proud, and overconfident were almost absolute.

Still, he couldn't help thinking how horrible things would go if they surprised him and maintained their millennia-long cautious intelligence, which had been used in the past with brutal efficiency to take over their world.

Feeling his hand squeezed, Leah giggled and pointed out a baby seal splashing in the water.

He grinned, forgetting his worries, and enjoyed the rest of the day.

...

Time passed, and a couple of pack members on patrol walking the airport borders saw something unusual as a series of private jets landed on the runway.

When cloaked figures stepped out, their eyes dilated, catching the unmistakable scent of death.

Uncaring who saw, the two burst into their wolf forms and sprinted off to the reservation, setting off the alarm with their howls.

.

"Let them go; we'll get to them later. Take out the witnesses and send a group to investigate how much has been discovered in this city and whether it needs to be purged," ordered Aro.

As for the internet, there were always people monitoring and controlling it 24/7.

"Purged? And how exactly would we explain away an entire city being wiped out to the wider world?" asked Caius.

"I've been thinking for a while now that while the inventions they've made have been most amusing, we should send them back to the Stone Ages before they ruin any more of the planet," said Aro, leaving out the part about how their growing technology is an increasing threat.

.

All the wolves at the reservation shifted, taking positions along the border, waiting for further orders.

(Report!) ordered Dean.

(Many private jets landed at Seattle with lots of vampires stepping out. We fled before we could count, but their numbers are no less than our own, probably more.)

(Sam, inform the council, then meet us at the meadow, the rest of you with me,) said Dean, and all 21 rushed out.

Stepping out into the meadow, they picked up nothing.

Dean called out four wolves to split off in pairs and scout the area while he and Leah took the middle.

Finding the vampires still inside the city limits, Dean ordered the others back into position while he and Leah watched from a distance.

(I think that one knows we're here,) said Leah, indicating a cloaked figure on a roof in the distance facing their general direction.

(Possibly,) said Dean.

(What are we going to do Dean? What if there are hundreds of them? We can't fight that many,) said Leah worriedly.

(I've had similar concerns, which I brought up to the council. We have plans in place in case the worst happens,) said Dean, reassuring her.

(What the hell are they waiting for?) growled Leah after hours of nothing happening, staring at the cloaked figure who remained unmoved like a statue.

(Nightfall,) said Dean.

(Not cloudy enough for them?) asked Leah sourly, looking up at the overcast.

While vamp venom would still burn even on cloudy days if left too long in the sun, there were times it was dark enough that it might as well have been night.

(I doubt they're the type to risk a cloud opening ruining their day, no matter how dark the sky,) said Dean, (Let's head back for now and ensure everyone is ready for what's to come.)

Back at the meadow, Dean addressed the pack, (They aren't making a move yet, we likely have until nightfall before they come. Sam, I want you to pick three of the darker-toned wolves and take position in the woods for an ambush later. As for the rest of you, do what you must now, and prepare yourselves for the fight of your lives. We've trained for this. This is why we were made, and we'll see each and every one of them dead before sunrise for daring to come here!)

There were lots of agreed barks and howls, shaking off their nerves.

Dean walked a bit away with Leah to have a private conversation. Rubbing his head against her, (How you doing?) he asked, happy to have discovered he could talk to her alone despite everyone being in wolf form. Something that likely has to do with them being a special breed of Alpha mates.

(Fine,) said Leah in a monotone.

(Hm, this will be our toughest challenge yet, but I'm not worried in the slightest, I'm excited despite the seriousness of the situation at hand,) said Dean, his stomach, unfortunately, growling moments later.

Leah snorted, (I can tell.)

(We'll be okay,) said Dean, pushing his head into her again.

(Yeah, we have to be,) said Leah, leaning against him, thinking of all they've yet to do together.

It was a bit hard at first to manage all the voices in their heads, but now most could pick out the voices they wished to hear and ignore the others. It was still tough at times however, when everyone spoke at once.

Paul, in particular, was groaning as the headache of voices wouldn't stop.

(Paul... Paul... Paul!) shouted Sam, over the dark silver fur wolf lying down with his head buried beneath his paws in a futile effort to stop the noise. Nudging him with a paw.

(What?) Paul groaned.

(I was wondering if you had any input on who I should take,) asked Sam.

(I don't know, most of the ones I can think of aren't exactly dark enough in color. Just pick whoever and leave me alone,) said Paul.

Annoyed, Sam went around looking at his choices with Jared by his side.

Come evening, Jared and Sam left with the two other wolves that fit and waited for further orders or opportunity to present itself.

The rest moved back into battle position on Dean's order.

Dean hated that he couldn't leave anyone to defend the reservation, but he needed everyone to fight together, and he doubted any vamps would be sent elsewhere when they spotted their sizable force.
