Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Getting Chased

How do I fight four wolves at once? Sophia looked around for anything that could narrow the odds, and found nothing.

"Haa... why did I run into a pack of wolves? Me and my cursed luck."

The wolves looked like they hadn't eaten in a while, and their feral eyes scared her so much that she almost wanted to give up on the spot.

No. I've already died once and I'm on my second life. I'm not giving up now.

She opened her status panel and spotted a skill that felt right for the moment.

"Okay, little Wolfies. I don't want to hurt you, but I need to survive."

As she prepared to use Dash, one of the wolves lunged. She hopped sideways and the wolf flew past her, exposing its neck. Before she could think, she activated Dash and drove her head into its throat.

The wolf dropped without a sound.

"That's what you get for attacking me," she said, a little shaky.

The other wolves froze and stared at their fallen packmate. Then they turned their eyes on the small bunny in front of them. Whatever they had thought of her before, they now saw her as a real threat, and they began to circle, looking for an opening.

The leader snarled and charged, claws glowing as it used its skill Pouncing Claws. At the same time, the others slipped behind the trees to ambush her from the sides. Sophia tried to dodge, but she was caught between them and couldn't get away.

"GAAAAAH! Why am I getting ambushed? I had the advantage! How did it all turn around?"

Calm down. Think. How do I get out of this?

Then she noticed a small hole in the ground, and without thinking, she dove in.

"A hole! If I can get through that, maybe I can escape!"

The wolves rushed after her. One of them got close enough to graze a tuft of fur off her back.

Blinded by rage, the wolves dug furiously at the hole. A bunny that could kill one of them was a threat to the whole pack, and if they left it alone, it might become a catastrophe later. They poured everything they had into catching her.

Underground, Sophia dug deeper and deeper. Behind her, the sound of claws on dirt grew louder.

Why won't they give up? What did I do to... She stopped. Oh. I killed one of them.

Her stomach twisted, but there was no time to feel guilty. She kept digging until the earth gave way beneath her paws.

"KYAAAAA!"

She tumbled out into a tunnel, big and long enough to hide in. Dirt poured in behind her and the hole collapsed, and the wolves' howls and snarls faded into silence.

Sophia let out a long breath. Her mind was reeling and her heart pounded like a drum being struck by a hundred drummers. She slumped against the wall to rest.

As she sat there, her eyes wandered around the cave. The plants growing nearby gave off tiny particles of light, and soon the whole cave glowed in a dazzling shimmer. She backed away, startled, but not out of fear. She was in awe.
