Chapter 3 - Trial by Fire (The Gauntlet)

The Cradle of Light:

Three hours of restless, dream-haunted sleep passed before Cristino woke in a small, luminous room. It was not a jail cell, but a sanctuary—a room carved from pale, glowing crystal, the light soft and constant. He was given a simple, satisfying meal that tasted of fruit and pure spring water. The overwhelming sensory overload of the Light Realm was slowly beginning to settle into a new, strange reality.

The next day, Cemin took Cristino to the village. This was no rough camp; it was a flourishing community built on quiet discipline. Two months stretched ahead of him—months Cemin had decreed necessary to strip away the boy and forge the warrior.

"You must learn our ways before you learn the power, Cristino," Cemin instructed, walking with Cristino through the sun-drenched, white-stone streets. "The FATHIUM is not a weapon; it is an extension of your spirit. If your spirit is poisoned by revenge, the FATHIUM will be corrupted."

Cristino struggled. He learned the culture of the Light Embracers—a life predicated on collective harmony, structured meditation, and the rejection of all things dark. It felt stifling, a constant, frustrating contrast to the burning need for retribution that motivated him.

The Weight of FATHIUM:

The training was brutal. Cemin didn't just teach tactics; he taught control. Cristino had to meditate for hours, trying to feel the energy, the raw, limitless power Cemin called the FATHIUM, that was supposedly waiting in his core. He would scream in frustration, unable to conjure anything but a faint, tingling warmth.

"You are forcing it, Cristino," Cemin would calmly say, effortlessly conjuring a pulsating orb of white light in his palm. "The FATHIUM must be invited, not commanded. It is born of belief, not just muscle."

Cristino excelled at the physical training—the speed, the acrobatics, the tactical movements Cemin drilled into him. He quickly grasped how to anticipate and counter the attacks of a Dark Embracer. But the power, the true power, remained elusive, fueling his frustration and impatience. He just wanted to learn how to hit back, how to avenge his parents, but Cemin refused to let him bypass the mental discipline.

The Golden Palace Feast:

After two arduous months, a celebration was announced—a grand feast in the golden palace, the heart of the Light Realm. The night shimmered with an atmosphere of relieved gaiety. The High Embracers and their families gathered, their laughter echoing through the magnificent hall. For the first time, Cristino felt a fragile sense of belonging, a temporary respite from the storm of his grief.

Cemin watched Cristino from across the hall, a flicker of pride in his eyes. The boy was still volatile, but he was learning. He was integrating. The realm felt safe, shielded by its high walls and the power of the gathered warriors.

Then, the world shattered.

A single, piercing shout cut through the music and laughter. "Guard! We are under attack!"

Chaos erupted. Tables overturned. Wine spilled. The joyful sounds were instantly replaced by the terrifying, familiar clamor of battle readiness. The High Embracers, including Cemin and Comm (the Senior Commander), moved with shocking efficiency, drawing their light-blades, their faces hardening into the grim masks of war.

The Initiation:

Cemin grabbed Cristino, who stood frozen in a wave of adrenaline and paralyzing memory. This was the dark presence; this was the enemy.

"They are inside the palace, Cristino! They are the first wave," Cemin shouted over the rising din of combat, his eyes burning with focus.

Cemin's hands went to a small satchel at his hip. He pulled out a bundle of clothing and shoved it at Cristino. It was a suit of specialized fabric, a shimmering, snow-white material unlike anything Cristino had ever seen.

"Wear this!" Cemin commanded. "This is your FATHIUM armor. It will channel your power, even the little you have managed to unlock. It will give you protection and enhance your speed. Go!"

As Cristino wrestled into the garments, he felt the material connect with his skin. A sharp, thrilling surge of energy—a thousand times stronger than the mild warmth he had felt during meditation—coursed through his veins. It wasn't just clothing; it felt like a living skin. His senses sharpened, and his mind, usually frantic, was suddenly clear, focused only on the danger.

Comm, standing ready with his light-blade humming, looked at Cristino. "You are a Light Embracer now, Cristino. Don't hesitate. Move with us."

Cristino looked down at his new, pristine white uniform, the symbol of the very force he was so desperately fighting to understand. He lifted his gaze, no longer a grieving civilian, but a warrior thrust prematurely onto the front line. The attack had pulled him from the safety of training and dropped him directly into the Trial by Fire. The time for introspection was over. The time for fighting had begun.
