Chapter 3 - Genius *

The soft crunch of tires rolling over gravel broke the quiet morning atmosphere hanging over the Dreraye Estate. Sylvaniah, who had just finished clearing the breakfast table alongside her grandfather, turned her gaze toward the wrought-iron front gate.

A pristine pearl-white SUV glided smoothly into the spacious driveway, coming to an elegant stop near the porch. The vehicle belonged to Evanesse, who had arrived precisely as promised to accompany Sylvaniah to the rural filming location.

The driver's door opened smoothly, followed almost instantly by the rear passenger entrance. A young woman stepped out onto the driveway, her posture relaxed as a radiant smile brightened her features.

She wore a soft cream-colored blouse tucked neatly into high-waisted denim jeans that accentuated her slim frame. Her long chestnut hair swayed gently with the morning breeze, while thin-rimmed glasses rested gracefully against the bridge of her nose.

She bore little resemblance to the rigid medical professionals typically featured on evening news broadcasts. Instead, her vibrant energy made her look more like an enthusiastic university student enjoying a long weekend getaway.

The moment her clear eyes locked onto Sylvaniah, her expression lit up with uninhibited joy. Her composed demeanor vanished instantly, replaced by sheer excitement.

"Sister-in-law!" she called out, her voice echoing cheerfully across the open yard.

Without paying the slightest attention to her posture, Evanesse jogged across the paved courtyard with broad strides. She threw her arms around Sylvaniah, pulling her into a tight, affectionate hug.

"I missed you so much!" Evanesse exclaimed, squeezing her tighter before finally easing her hold.

Sylvaniah froze for a brief second, completely unaccustomed to such physical affection. She awkwardly raised her hands and lightened her posture, gently patting the younger woman's back.

"Good morning, Evanesse," Sylvaniah replied softly, offering a faint smile as she stepped back slightly.

Evanesse pulled away to a comfortable distance, her gaze sweeping critically over Sylvaniah's face and frame. Her brows knit together in a subtle expression of concern.

"You have gotten thinner since the last time I saw you," Evanesse noted, her tone laced with light disapproval.

"I have been busy on set," Sylvaniah explained, adjusting the strap of her shoulder bag.

"You have not been eating properly again, have you?" Evanesse countered, resting her hands firmly on her hips.

Sylvaniah let out a helpless laugh, shaking her head at her sister-in-law's persistence. "I promise I will eat properly from now on."

"You made that exact same promise to me three months ago," Evanesse pointed out with a playful smirk.

Grandfather Dreraye watched the exchange from the shaded veranda, his eyes crinkling with deep affection. He leaned lightly on his wooden walking cane, chuckling softly at the younger woman's energetic spirit.

"So this is little Evanesse," the old patriarch remarked softly, his deep voice carrying across the lawn. "I have heard so much about your visits to the city house, but it has been years since these old eyes have seen you in person."

Evanesse immediately turned toward the elderly gentleman with impeccable manners. She smoothed down her blouse and bowed respectfully from the waist, her demeanor shifting into one of polite reverence.

"Good morning, Grandpa Dreraye," she greeted warmly, rising with a brilliant smile. "I apologize for not visiting your estate sooner."

"My, you have grown into an even prettier young lady," the old man praised, his eyes twinkling with genuine warmth.

"And you have managed to stay just as handsome," Evanesse countered seamlessly, without a second of hesitation.

The old patriarch let out a hearty laugh that seemed to clear away the quiet chill of the morning air. "What a sweet tongue you have, little girl."

After a short round of warm farewells, the two women loaded their travel bags into the back of the SUV. They bade farewell to the Dreraye Estate and set off on the multi-hour drive toward the distant countryside.

By mid-afternoon, the white SUV navigated down a long, winding dirt road surrounded by rolling green hills and lush farmland. They finally arrived at the official village set for Back to the Countryside, where the production crew had established their primary base of operations.

The production staff moved quickly, unloading specialized cameras and testing lighting rigs around the main rustic courtyard. Since official filming was still slated to begin in three days, this initial gathering was strictly meant for setting up living arrangements and shooting preliminary promo clips.

A minor crew member walked up to the two women with a small handheld camera, capturing behind-the-scenes footage for later editing. The camera lens zoomed in as Evanesse helped unload their luggage from the trunk.

"Who is that young woman standing beside Miss Dreraye?" a junior cameraman murmured under his breath to his colleague.

"I have no idea," his partner replied in a low whisper, adjusting his audio receiver. "She is probably just a personal assistant hired for the show."

"That makes sense," the first crew member speculated with a short shrug. "No real relative would want to be filmed with her."

A senior production staff member approached Evanesse politely, pointing toward a pair of massive travel trunks resting near the edge of the dirt path. "Miss, could you perhaps help us transport Miss Dreraye's luggage into the primary house for testing?"

Before Sylvaniah could step forward to clarify her sister-in-law's true identity, Evanesse simply offered a bright, agreeable smile. She showed no annoyance at being mistaken for hired help.

"Of course, I can handle that," Evanesse responded cheerfully, rolling up her sleeves with effortless grace.

She walked over to the oversized cases, which had required three burly production crew members to carry down the path earlier. Without straining or losing her posture, she lifted both heavy suitcases simultaneously and carried them smoothly toward the courtyard entrance.

The surrounding staff members stared in absolute silence, their mouths hanging open as she casually carried the heavy luggage across the gravel path. They looked at her slender arms in total disbelief.

One of the line producers blinked twice, rubbing his eyes to ensure he was seeing correctly.

"She is surprisingly strong for someone so slim," he muttered.

The crew members whispered among themselves, leaning further into their initial assumptions about her role.

"At least Sylvaniah's assistant is actually useful around the set," a technician remarked dryly.

"Poor girl," another worker muttered. "Imagine having to do heavy manual labor while working for a disgraced actress."

Sylvaniah pinched the bridge of her nose, letting out a quiet, internal sigh as she overheard the low chatter. The public perception surrounding her original identity was so thoroughly damaged that people automatically assumed the worst.

Fortunately, Evanesse seemed completely unfazed by the side-eyes and whispered assumptions from the production crew. She simply moved on to helping an elderly local technician carry several metal equipment cases across the uneven ground.

"Please watch your step on these stones," Evanesse reminded the older worker, offering a gentle, supporting hand as he set down a heavy monitor.

The veteran technician looked up, his expression softening with genuine gratitude.

"You are an exceptionally polite young lady," he noted warmly, wiping sweat from his brow.

The pleasant atmosphere on the rural set was suddenly shattered by the sharp, piercing screech of heavy tires dragging across dirt and gravel along the main village road. The jarring noise echoed loudly through the countryside air, instantly drawing everyone's attention toward the entry lane.

An emergency medical vehicle came to a sudden stop right outside the village perimeter gate, its red emergency lights strobing wildly against the surrounding trees. The rear doors burst open, and several paramedics hurried out while pushing a collapsible stretcher.

An elderly village resident was brought out from a nearby homestead, clutching frantically at the center of her chest while struggling to draw air into her lungs. Her face was pale, and her fingers trembled visibly against her clothing.

The production crew instinctively lowered their promotional camera rigs, looking toward their director for instructions on how to handle the unexpected situation. The mood on set instantly shifted from lighthearted television preparation to tense real-world drama.

"Stop recording and give the family some privacy," the floor manager instructed sternly, waving his hand toward the ground. "We do not film private medical emergencies."

Before anyone else on the crew could react, the cheerful demeanor on Evanesse's face dissolved completely into absolute focus. The warm, playful smile that had brightened her features earlier vanished without a trace.

In its place emerged a calm, commanding posture that seemed to radiate absolute authority. She stepped away from the equipment cases and strode purposefully toward the open rear doors of the emergency vehicle.

Sylvaniah blinked in surprise at the sudden change, taking a quick step forward.

"Evanesse?" she called out, puzzled by her sister-in-law's sudden movement.

One of the attending paramedics noticed the young woman approaching the restricted medical zone and immediately held up a gloved hand. He wore a stressed, focused expression as he tried to manage the patient's deteriorating condition.

"Miss, please stay back and do not interfere with an active emergency," the technician ordered sharply, shifting his body to block her path.

Rather than stepping back or arguing, Evanesse kept her gaze fixed entirely on the elderly woman's pale features. She processed the patient's physical symptoms with speed, her eyes narrowing behind her thin-rimmed glasses.

"She is exhibiting classic signs of an acute myocardial infarction," Evanesse stated, her voice entirely flat and devoid of hesitation.

The paramedic froze mid-movement, his eyes widening in total shock as he looked back at the young woman.

"How could you possibly know that just by looking at her?" he demanded.

"Her lips are showing clear cyanotic discoloration, and her peripheral perfusion is dropping rapidly," Evanesse explained calmly, pointing out the specific physical indicators without breaking stride.

The patient's chest suddenly heaved violently as her breathing became increasingly labored and shallow. The elderly woman gasped for air, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of the gurney.

Several distraught family members standing on the dirt road dissolved into tears, clutching each other in desperation.

"Doctor! Please do something to help her!" a young woman sobbed hysterically.

The attending paramedic looked deeply troubled, pressing a hand against his radio headset as he checked the patient's irregular pulse.

"The nearest specialized cardiac center is more than forty minutes away through the county mountain roads," he admitted grimly.

Before the paramedic could initiate transport protocols, a sleek black luxury sedan rounded the gravel curve and brought itself to a sudden halt behind the ambulance. The vehicle bore the official, silver-embossed crest of St. Aurelius Medical Center proudly printed along its side panels.

The rear passenger door swung open immediately, and a middle-aged man dressed in a tailored suit beneath a pristine white laboratory coat stepped out. A team of junior resident physicians and head nurses followed closely behind him, carrying specialized diagnostic kits.

"Director Lorenzo!" a nurse called out anxiously, running to meet him on the unpaved road. "The patient's vitals are dropping fast!"

The hospital director nodded grimly, adjusting his glasses as he prepared to take immediate control of the emergency scene. He took three rapid strides toward the open ambulance doors, his expression severe and focused.

However, as he cleared the rear bumper of the vehicle, his gaze accidentally swept across the young woman standing near the paramedics. He stopped dead in his tracks, his feet locking onto the dirt as if struck by lightning.

For a long, agonizing second, the senior physician completely forgot about the critical patient lying on the stretcher before him. Shock spread across his weathered face, his mouth opening slightly as his eyes dilated.

His breathing turned erratic and heavy, his chest heaving as if his mind refused to accept the reality of the person standing mere feet away. He stared at Evanesse with a mix of absolute disbelief and overwhelming reverence.

The production crew standing in the courtyard were completely baffled by the sudden, dramatic shift in the atmosphere. They exchanged confused glances, entirely unable to make sense of the high-ranking physician's strange behavior.

"Isn't that Director Lorenzo, the Chief of Surgery from St. Aurelius Medical Center?" a junior technician whispered to the producer.

Without warning, the distinguished hospital director broke into a rapid pace across the dirt road. He moved with desperate speed, bypassing the ambulance entirely.

He was not running toward the dying patient. He was moving directly toward Evanesse.

He brought himself to a sudden halt directly in front of the young woman, snapping his feet together. Before anyone could utter a word of confusion, the famous chief surgeon lowered his head and bowed deeply from the waist with absolute, unhesitating deference.

When he finally spoke, his voice trembled with an unmistakable mixture of awe and profound relief. "Doctor Evanesse..."

The noisy, chaotic village street fell into a sudden, dead silence that seemed to freeze time itself. The crew members watched in total speechlessness as the prestigious medical authority addressed a supposed assistant with utmost reverence.

Director Lorenzo slowly raised his head, looking at the young woman with eyes full of hope. "Doctor Evanesse, thank goodness you are here!"

Evanesse did not waste a single second on pleasantries or formal introductions. She immediately took charge, stepping toward the gurney while giving sharp, precise clinical instructions to the astonished medical team.

Sylvaniah watched from the edge of the dirt courtyard, her mind reeling as she witnessed her sister-in-law effortlessly command the chief of surgery.

The crew members stood frozen, their previous assumptions about the "meek assistant" thoroughly shattered, yet none of them had any idea what her true surname or background actually was.
