Chapter 157 - Avengers Assemble 4, Fake Mandarin?

"This trip." Shang-Chi's voice was even, careful. "Does it have anything to do with my father?"

Tony stopped scrolling. He turned to look at Shang-Chi properly, and this time the question didn't catch him off guard the way it might have a few months earlier. 'There's an actual thread here,' Tony thought. 'Thin. Not secret, not classified, just buried under enough transmission logs that nobody but him would have gone looking for it.'

"Where'd you hear that?" Tony asked, not accusing, just direct.

"I didn't hear anything specific." Shang-Chi's jaw tightened slightly. "I've been watching this room for three days straight, and nobody's said his name once. That's not normal. Somebody usually brings him up eventually. Nobody has. What's up with that guy you caught? Still locked up?"

"He isn't," Tony said. "Locked away, I mean. Not anymore."

That landed. Shang-Chi's looked calm, but something behind his eyes sharpened into full attention. "Since when?"

"A while now." Tony leaned back slightly, choosing his words. "Once I'd pulled everything useful out of him, which admittedly wasn't much, keeping him in a private cell indefinitely stopped making sense."

"He was never anything more than a mouthpiece for the people actually in charge. I handed him to SHIELD. Standard custody, standard process." He paused. "I probably should've told you that directly instead of letting you find out by absence. That's on me."

Shang-Chi's jaw worked once before he spoke again. "You said he was never anything more than a mouthpiece."

"That's the part that actually matters here." Tony pulled up a data pane and scrolled through it, more out of habit than need at this point.

"The rings I took off him, the ones everyone assumed were the genuine Ten Rings, ran drier than they should have. I integrated them into my own systems after I caught him, and I used them plenty over the following months."

"Then the Apocalypse fight happened. I drew hard on everything I had, including those rings, and they just stopped. Dead weight ever since. No output, no response, nothing." He shook his head.

"A legendary artifact powerful enough to anchor an entire organization for generations shouldn't run out of gas in one bad afternoon. That never sat right with me."

Shang-Chi was quiet for a long moment, something working behind his expression. "They weren't the real ones."

"That's my read too, but I don't have proof, just a bad feeling and some depleted hardware."

"You don't need proof." Shang-Chi's voice stayed level, but there was an edge underneath it now, old and complicated.

"My father never wore rings on his fingers. Not once, not that I ever saw. His were bands, worn on both forearms, the real ones, the ones the organization actually answered to."

"I was young when I saw them last, but I remember that much clearly." He paused, choosing his next words carefully.

"The man you caught, the one the public called the Mandarin, that was never him. I don't think it was ever meant to be him."
