Chapter 155 - Avengers Assemble 2·

"Thor's team," Fury confirmed. "Timestamp on the fragment lines up close enough with when they went dark. Whatever sent it, somebody out there is still alive, and they knew exactly which frequency would get our attention."

Peggy stood next, crisp and composed in the way she always was when the room needed steadying rather than urgency.

"SHIELD's deep space assets are limited, we've never needed a serious presence that far out until now. What we do have confirms the signal's point of origin is consistent with a debris field roughly six hundred thousand kilometers past Jupiter. No further telemetry beyond that. We're going in mostly blind."

"Which is where I come in," Tony said.

He didn't stand, didn't need the theater of it. He tapped his own control, and the display shifted, the star chart replaced by a rendering of a single ship, dark hulled, angular in a way that suggested speed without sacrificing armor.

"This one's been in the pipeline a long time," Tony said. "Concept work goes back to right after the Battle of New York, if you want the honest timeline. Sat in private R&D picking up pieces for years. Fold-space drive, so travel time isn't the problem it would be otherwise. Layered defenses, enough firepower to handle most things we're likely to run into. Spent the last few days pushing it through final calibration and stress testing. I'll be flying it out personally."

"Just the one," Rhodey said, arms crossed.

"Just the one going out. There's an older prototype as backup if we need it, not finished to the same spec, but flightworthy." Tony left it there, didn't elaborate further, and nobody pushed on the specifics. "Team's small. Me, Cap, Strange."

The room went quiet in the particular way it did when several people were doing math at once and didn't like the answer.

"Three people," Natasha said.

"Three people."

"Against something that took down Thor, Hulk, Carol, and T'Challa. Plus a Guardian crew." She set the tablet down, folded her hands, all business now. "I'm not questioning your judgment. I'm questioning the number."

"Same," Rhodey said, more bluntly, leaning forward. "Tony, I get the reasoning, small team, fast, quiet, doesn't paint a target the size of a parade. But we're talking about something that erased four of our heaviest hitters without so much as a distress call until now. You want to walk in with three."

"I want to walk in with three because four heavy hitters walking in loud is exactly what got them erased," Tony said. "We don't know what we're facing yet. Could be a fight. Could be something that doesn't respond to force at all, in which case bringing more muscle just means more people standing in the blast radius when it goes wrong. Small and fast lets us gather intel and adjust before we're committed to anything we can't walk back."

"And if it is a fight," Rhodey pressed. "A real one."

"Then I've got contingencies you don't have patience to hear about, and Strange has resources most people in this room have never seen him use." Tony met his eyes, steady. "This isn't something I threw together this week, Rhodey. Years in the making. I don't build backup because I'm hoping for the best. I build it because I plan for the worst, and I'm not walking in unprepared."

Rhodey held his gaze a moment longer, then sat back, not fully satisfied but recognizing the wall when he hit it.
