Their bodies are like massive furnaces of Negative Energy, and they dissolve and transform a large part of the material they devour, randomly tossing the resulting waste into the Shadow Plane, making it a part of that plane's composition.
Just like the Corpse Hounds and Death Stalkers are extensions of the Plains of Bone, these Night Shadows can also be considered a part of the Shadow Plane, existing to further the grand will of the plane.
The devouring of the Material Plane to replace it has always been the grand will of the Shadow Plane.
Rather than saying it's the grand will of the Shadow Plane,
it's more appropriate to say it's the will of the Night Goddess Shar.
