Malerc found the unclaimed realm where the newest branches of the afterlife system thinned into darkness.
It possessed no name. A stone hall stood at its center with an empty courtyard on one side and a field of pale grass on the other. Most of its doors opened onto unfinished rooms. The largest chamber contained rows of bare tables beneath a ceiling that gave off a dim, even light.
Kharveck walked the length of the hall and returned without finding another inhabitant.
"Small." Kharveck said.
"Large enough to begin my plan." Malerc replied.
The realm had appeared after the wider afterlife network became active. Its system record identified it as a minor destination seed: a space that could be claimed by beings capable of maintaining it, provided they established a valid purpose, a qualified group of visitors, and a living route.
