Chapter 915 - 914-So much for Konoha’s confidence

The massive gates of Kumogakure finished opening with a deep, grinding rumble; the sound echoed through the mountain pass like a declaration of intent. Renjiro stood at the front of the eighty-person Konoha delegation, his posture relaxed, but his senses extended, reading the atmosphere of the village before him. Behind him, sixty Konoha genin waited in disciplined formation; their jonin senseis, Kakashi, Asuma, Guy, and Kurenai, flanked the group with professional composure. Medical personnel and administrative staff completed the contingent, their presence a reminder that this was a diplomatic mission as much as a military examination.

The contrast was immediate; Konoha's delegation was here for an examination, but to many Kumo civilians, these were descendants and representatives of former enemies. Renjiro noticed that the atmosphere was far colder than the diplomatic agreements suggested. The warmth of the political treaties had not reached the streets; the people of Kumo remembered the war, and their memories were long.

The delegation began moving through Kumo's narrow mountain approaches; the geography immediately reinforced the village's defensive character. Cliffs towered above them, their faces scarred by centuries of wind and weather. Narrow paths wound through the mountains, their surfaces worn smooth by generations of feet. Bridges spanned deep ravines, their structures reinforced with Lightning Release seals. Elevated platforms offered vantage points for shinobi watchposts, their occupants visible as silhouettes against the grey sky.

Renjiro's sensory awareness activated naturally; he noticed dozens of Kumo shinobi observing them from the cliffs and platforms. Some were openly hostile, their chakra signatures carrying the particular sharpness of those who had not forgotten the war. Others were simply curious, their attention drawn by the unusual sight of a large Konoha delegation moving through their village.

The younger Konoha genin began realising that they were not entering a neutral examination venue; they were entering the territory of a former enemy.

Kumo civilians and off-duty shinobi gathered along the cliffs and streets; their reactions ranged from cold stares to whispered insults to muted threats. References to the Third Shinobi World War were audible in the murmurs that followed the delegation. A few older civilians recognised some of the Konoha jonin, creating uncomfortable moments where veterans silently acknowledged former enemies.

Renjiro noticed that the adults understood the tension much more clearly than the genin. He deliberately ordered the Konoha delegation to maintain formation; no one was allowed to respond to provocation. The command was firm, carrying the weight of his authority.

Peace treaties can stop armies, he thought, his internal voice carrying the weight of his observation. They cannot erase memories.

Several Konoha genin became visibly nervous; some tried to hide it, while others stared back at the Kumo civilians with defiant expressions. Renjiro noticed the psychological effect immediately. The examination had technically already begun; Kumo was unintentionally testing Konoha's composure before they even reached the academy.

Kakashi noticed the same thing, his visible eye tracking the genin's reactions with analytical precision. Asuma quietly reminded his group to ignore the crowd, his voice calm and steady. Guy enthusiastically told the genin that remaining calm under pressure was part of being a shinobi, his energy a counterpoint to the tension. Kurenai simply watched their reactions, her expression unreadable.

The delegation reached Kumo's central plaza, where Makarui was waiting. She was accompanied by Kumo officials, proctors, and security personnel; her presence was commanding, her posture carrying the particular confidence of someone who had been given responsibility for a major diplomatic event. Her first impression was that the Konoha delegation looked surprisingly fresh, showing no exhaustion despite travelling through the mountains.

"You look remarkably well-rested," Makarui said, her voice carrying the weight of her observation. "The mountain journey is usually more taxing."

Renjiro casually credited Minato, his voice carrying the weight of his response.

"Having a Hokage who can teleport an entire delegation is extremely convenient."

Makarui understood the implication; Konoha possessed a logistical advantage she could not easily replicate. The Hokage's ability to move personnel instantly across vast distances was a strategic asset that Kumo could not match.

Makarui turned her attention toward the genin, observing the Konoha lineup with the particular intensity of someone assessing potential threats. Her expression subtly changed; the roster was noticeably less impressive than she had expected. She made a diplomatic but unmistakable remark about Konoha's young shinobi, her voice carrying the weight of her observation.

"Kumo expected more from Konoha's representatives," she said, her voice carrying the weight of her assessment. "The selection seems… conservative."

Renjiro immediately understood what she was implying. He remembered the council meeting; Danzō's decision suddenly became much more tangible. He didn't let his irritation show, his expression remaining composed.

"Still waters run deep, Commander," he responded smoothly.

The statement sounded confident and diplomatic. Makarui understood it as a warning; don't underestimate Konoha. Internally, Renjiro was considerably less convinced. He knew exactly why the Konoha lineup looked mediocre; Danzō had deliberately withheld many of Konoha's strongest young talents.

Still waters? he thought. At this point, we're mostly hoping the water is deep enough.

He refused to undermine his own village publicly.

While the two commanders spoke, Renjiro's attention shifted toward the assembled Kumo genin. His sensory perception scanned the group; most candidates had ordinary chakra signatures, unremarkable in their density and stability. Then one caught his attention. A young genin stood among the Kumo participants with a slouched posture, half-lidded eyes, and an expression of apparent boredom. He was completely unimpressed by the surrounding hostility.

It was Darui.

Renjiro quietly studied the future Raikage. Darui's outward appearance suggested laziness, but his chakra told a completely different story. Unusually dense chakra, excellent baseline control, a stable pulse, no significant anxiety despite the hostile environment, and a naturally calm chakra network. Renjiro immediately categorised him as someone worth watching.

He didn't approach Darui; he simply memorised his chakra signature.

The future Raikage is talented, he thought, his internal voice carrying the weight of his assessment. He might just win the whole thing since Konoha refused to put up a fight.

Makarui announced that the first stage was about to begin. The genin were separated into their designated groups, and jonin senseis were instructed to remain outside. Proctors took their positions, and Renjiro reminded the Konoha genin of his final instructions.

"Don't underestimate the exam. Don't react to provocation. Read carefully. Think before acting."

The sixty Konoha genin entered the examination hall alongside the sixty Kumo

The examination hall was a large central academy space; one hundred and twenty genin were seated, each one receiving the examination materials. The atmosphere was deliberately oppressive; the questions were designed to test information gathering, intelligence, deductive reasoning, decision-making, and composure. The actual answers were intentionally difficult; passing required more than memorisation.

Kakashi and Asuma moved through the hall as jonin invigilators; their presence immediately made the genin nervous. Kakashi quietly watched eyes, hands, chakra fluctuations, body positioning, and suspicious movements. Asuma focused more heavily on team dynamics, emotional reactions, and candidates helping one another. Neither needed to shout; their reputations did most of the work.

Guy and Kurenai observed from elevated positions; Kurenai focused on subtle chakra abnormalities, while Guy watched candidates' physical reactions. Whenever someone attempted to communicate illegally, Kurenai detected the chakra spike, and Guy's presence created additional pressure. The four proctors complemented one another.

The questions became progressively harder; Kumo genin remained relatively composed, while many Konoha genin began struggling. Renjiro's earlier warning about psychological pressure became important; several Konoha candidates began making mistakes, looking around, panicking, second-guessing themselves, and attempting unauthorised information gathering. Kakashi quietly identified the problem; many of these genin simply weren't accustomed to this level of pressure.

The exam's central trick became apparent; the candidates weren't necessarily expected to know every answer. They were expected to obtain information without being detected. Kumo genin began exploiting the environment intelligently, subtly gathering information from other candidates, reflections, written materials, peripheral vision, and team coordination. Several Konoha teams failed to adapt.

The irony became clear; Danzō had wanted to send "safe" genin, but the exam specifically rewarded adaptability and intelligence.

Renjiro watched from outside the hall, observing through the proctor monitoring system. He saw Konoha's teams progressively dropping, failing to meet the exam's challenges. He immediately understood the problem; these weren't necessarily weak shinobi, but they simply weren't equipped for the kind of examination he had designed. His expression became increasingly unreadable.

Danzō wanted to protect Konoha's future assets, he thought, his internal voice carrying the weight of his frustration. Instead, he sent us people who aren't prepared to represent them.

The exam concluded. Proctors compiled the results, and silence filled the hall as candidates waited for the verdict. The numbers were announced; total candidates, one hundred and twenty genin: sixty from Konoha and sixty from Kumo. Passing candidates, forty-eight genin, sixteen teams: Konoha had six teams, eighteen genin, with fourteen teams eliminated; Kumo had ten teams, thirty genin, with ten teams advancing.

The results immediately exposed the weakness of Danzō's roster strategy. Kumo had outperformed Konoha, and the numbers created a dangerous political image: Kumo looked stronger, and Konoha looked weaker. Renjiro realised this was exactly what he had warned the council about.

He didn't say anything.

Makarui looked toward Renjiro with a small, knowing smirk. She didn't need to say anything; the numbers spoke for her. Her expression essentially said: So much for Konoha's confidence.
