The forest path toward Azalea Town was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. Ash walked at the center of the group, Pikachu on his shoulder and Eevee close at his heels. Misty, Daisy, Erika, Melody, Sabrina, and Giselle moved easily behind him, the conversation light after the long stretch of road.
A sudden metallic flash cut through the trees. A red-and-black shape burst from the undergrowth Scizor, claws gleaming, wings buzzing with aggressive speed. It lunged toward the path as though the travelers were targets in a drill.
Erika stepped forward before anyone else could react. The normally serene Grass-type Gym Leader's eyes flashed with rare, sharp anger.
"How dare you let your Pokémon run loose and attack at will!" Her voice rang clear and cold. "This is a public path, not your private training ground. You could have seriously injured someone!"
The other girls nodded firmly in support. Misty's arms were crossed. Daisy's expression had turned serious. Melody looked offended on behalf of the group. Sabrina's gaze was icy. Giselle's quiet disapproval was unmistakable.
Ash watched Erika with a quiet spark of admiration.
The bold fire in her usually gentle demeanor was striking he found himself thinking she looked genuinely hot when she refused to back down.
The man who followed the Scizor raised both hands in immediate apology. He was middle-aged, sharp-eyed, and dressed in practical training clothes.
"You're right. Completely right. We were conducting secret training and lost track of the surroundings. I sincerely apologize."
He bowed slightly. "My name is Muramasa. This is my partner, Masamune." The Scizor settled beside him, still radiating power but no longer aggressive.
"I've heard of you, Ash Ketchum. Your reputation reaches even these woods. Please… allow me to make amends by inviting you and your companions to my elite training school nearby."
A blue system window flickered into Ash's vision.
Ding!
Mission: Use Heracross to defeat Muramasa's son Shingo and make him understand the true meaning of a Pokémon battle.
Reward: Champion-potential Scyther location, Best-quality Metal Coat ×1
Ash's eyes narrowed slightly. The reward style was familiar the same system reward that had once pointed him toward a Champion-potential Magikarp in Viridian Forest and the best Metal Coat after defeating Brock. The opportunity was clear. He dismissed the window with a mental nod and accepted the invitation.
Muramasa's training school sat in a wide clearing, a collection of sturdy wooden buildings, outdoor battlefields, and weighted training equipment. As they toured the grounds, a student approached with clear respect.
"Master Muramasa is one of the most talented Trainers in the region," the student said. "And Masamune is known as 'The Crimson Streak.' Its speed and power are legendary around here."
Melody's eyes lit up. "The Crimson Streak… that's a cool nickname."
Before anyone could reply, another Trainer strode onto the main field with abrupt confidence. He carried a laptop under one arm and wore the expression of someone who had already calculated every possible outcome.
Muramasa gestured. "This is my top student and my son Shingo."
Shingo's gaze locked onto Ash. "You're Ash Ketchum. I've been waiting for data like yours. Challenge me."
Ash nodded. "All right."
Instead of taking a battle stance, Shingo sat cross-legged on the grass, opened the laptop, and began scrolling rapidly. "This database contains everything I need to know about any Trainer. Patterns, preferred moves, win rates, team compositions…" His fingers froze.
The screen reflected in his widening eyes. "Indigo Plateau Conference… you didn't just compete. You dominated. And the Orange League… you're the current champion?" He swallowed hard, then forced a smirk. "Impressive numbers. But numbers can be countered. Give me time to prepare the optimal strategy. We'll battle tomorrow."
He closed the laptop and walked away without another word.
Later, as the sun dropped, Muramasa spoke privately with the group. "Shingo hasn't fought a real battle in over a year. He believes his laptop can predict every outcome. He's lost the heart of it the bond, the unpredictability, the spirit. He needs someone to show him that Pokémon battles are more than facts and figures."
Ash met the older man's eyes. "Tomorrow I'll show him the real meaning of a Pokémon battle."
That night in the guest rooms the girls gathered around Ash.
Misty leaned forward. "A guy who only trusts data? How do you even fight that?"
Daisy crossed her arms. "He'll try to predict every move."
Erika's voice was thoughtful. "Data has limits when the heart is involved."
Melody frowned. "It feels unfair somehow."
Giselle's gaze was steady. "Master has faced worse."
Sabrina simply watched Ash, waiting.
Ash smiled faintly. "Data can predict one move, two moves, even ten. I carry a billion combinations in my head. And more importantly… only a real bond lets a Pokémon unleash its true power. Shingo's about to learn that."
Morning brought clear skies and a quiet tension on the main battlefield. Muramasa took his place as referee.
"This will be a one-on-one battle. Each Trainer may use one Pokémon. The battle ends when one Pokémon is unable to continue."
Shingo stood with his laptop open on a nearby stand. "Blade, you're up!" A Scizor different from Masamune, sleeker and clearly trained for precision appeared in a flash of light.
Ash reached for a Poké Ball. "Heracross, let's go!"
The blue-shelled Fighting-type landed heavily, horn gleaming, eyes locked on its opponent. With firey passion as his Guts ability ready, and the hidden Fighting God power already beginning its quiet climb. Maximum intimacy pulsed between trainer and Pokémon like a living current.
"Battle begin!" Muramasa called.
Shingo's fingers flew across the keyboard. "Quick Attack!"
Blade became a red blur.
"Leer!" Ash commanded.
Heracross's eyes flashed, but the Quick Attack landed before the stat drop fully registered.
Heracross staggered, then planted its feet.
"Metal Claw!"
Blade's claws glowed silver and seized Heracross by the horn, lifting the heavier Pokémon off the ground.
"Use your weight land on your feet!" Ash called.
Heracross twisted mid-air and crashed down safely, horn still locked. It drove forward with Horn Attack.
The blow only grazed Blade, but Shingo's eyes widened as the laptop failed to account for the sudden recovery.
While Shingo frantically typed, Ash's voice remained calm. "Take Down!"
Heracross charged. Blade activated Agility and slipped aside in a streak of red. In seconds the Scizor had used its speed to circle behind, surrounding Heracross with pressure from every angle. The Fighting-type's eyes spun briefly with confusion.
Ash extended a hand. Soft blue Aura and a thread of psychic focus wrapped around Heracross.
"Relax. Let it come. Feel the rhythm, not the data."
Shingo's head snapped between screen and battlefield. He could no longer track both. Panic flickered across his face.
"Fury Attack now!"
Heracross exploded into motion. The hidden Fighting God power had already climbed several stages. Arms and horn became a storm of precise, relentless strikes. Blade tried Metal Claw; Heracross was simply too fast. One clean hit sent the Scizor skidding across the dirt.
Blade rose. Heracross came again with another Fury Attack. Shingo slammed the laptop shut and stood fully focused for the first time in a year.
"Quick Attack!"
"Tackle!"
Both Pokémon charged and missed by inches. Blade's Metal Claw swept in; Heracross twisted, and the claws locked uselessly around its horn.
Blade used Agility to wrench free, then dove with False Swipe a precise, powerful cut aimed to end the fight cleanly.
"Stand your ground!" Ash's Aura flared brighter.
The False Swipe struck Heracross's shell with a sharp crack and bounced away. The hard exoskeleton and rising attack power shrugged it off.
Heracross answered with a full-powered Horn Attack that lifted Blade clean off the ground and slammed it down. The Scizor struggled once, then went still.
"Blade is unable to battle!" Muramasa declared,
voice carrying quiet surprise. "Heracross wins!"
Shingo ran to his Pokémon's side, laptop completely forgotten. He rested a hand on Blade's shell. "You battled well. Better than any calculation I had."
Ash recalled Heracross with a proud smile. "Thank you for the battle, Shingo. Let's do this again someday when you're ready to fight with your heart as well as your head."
Shingo looked up, something new and clearer in his eyes, and nodded.
As the group prepared to leave the training school, a familiar blue window appeared in Ash's vision.
Ding!
Mission completed.
Reward issued: Champion-potential Scyther location unlocked. Best-quality Metal Coat ×1 added to inventory.
Ash closed the window with quiet satisfaction. Another step taken, another Trainer reminded of what truly mattered. With Pikachu on his shoulder, Eevee at his side, and his wives around him, he turned back toward the road. Azalea Town and the gym that waited there lay just ahead.
