Chapter 353 - Chapter 353: Weather Prediction with Oddish

The road to Azalea Town wound through rolling meadows thick with wildflowers and tall grass. Ash walked at the center of the group, Pikachu perched on his shoulder and Eevee padding beside Giselle. Misty, Daisy, Erika, Melody, and Sabrina moved along in easy conversation, the afternoon sun warm on their backs. Togepi rested contentedly in Misty's arms, eyes bright with curiosity.

Grass-type Pokémon appeared more frequently the farther they traveled. A pair of Bellsprout swayed at the edge of the path. Several Oddish dozed in the shade of a low bush.

Then a small pink shape came hopping into view, bouncing lightly from one tuft of grass to the next.

Erika's eyes lit with recognition. "That's a Hoppip. The Cottonweed Pokémon. Their bodies are so light that even a gentle breeze can carry them away."

As if summoned by her words, a soft gust swept down the road. The Hoppip's leaves caught the air and it lifted cleanly off the ground, drifting upward like a tiny pink kite.

"After it!" Ash called.

The group broke into a run. They had not gone far when a second figure appeared ahead a young woman with short teal-blue hair cut in a bob that ended in sharp side spikes, bright purple eyes, and a pink scarf tied loosely around her neck. She wore a simple sleeveless cream top and moved with practiced speed, swinging a large butterfly net in a smooth arc.

The drifting Hoppip settled neatly into the mesh. A moment later another Hoppip floated down from the sky and landed squarely on top of her head, as though it belonged there.

The girl carefully set the net down, lifted the second Hoppip into her arms, and turned to face the approaching group with a calm, friendly smile.

"You must be chasing this little one," she said. "I'm Mariah. These two belong to me along with five others. I use them to predict the weather."

Ash introduced everyone in turn. Mariah listened with polite interest, then gestured for them to follow her a short distance off the road to a cleared patch of ground bordered by a tall chain-link fence.

Seven Hoppip were already gathered there. The moment the group arrived, the small Pokémon began hopping closer to one another until they formed a tight cluster, leaves overlapping.

Mariah watched them with sharp attention. "They're grouping. That means the wind is about to pick up."

Almost on cue a stronger breeze swept through the clearing. Two of the Hoppip lifted into the air and sailed a short distance before catching on the wire fence. Mariah walked over, gently freed them, and turned back with a satisfied nod.

"That rates a two on the Hoppip Scale," she explained. "Strong enough to lift only two of them. I've been recording these patterns for months. If I can map the relationship between their behavior and the actual weather, it could help meteorologists make better long-range forecasts."

The Hoppip clustered again. This time the breeze that followed was sharper. Six of them rose at once and drifted away on the current, leaving only one behind.

The remaining Hoppip stared after its companions, then made a determined little run toward a nearby rock. It scrambled to the top and launched itself into the air with all its might only to drop straight back to the grass with a soft thud.

Misty and Melody hurried over. While Misty held the small Pokémon steady, Melody carefully brushed dust from its leaves. As she wiped the surface, the pink coloration began to smear and wash away, revealing deeper green leaves and a round blue body beneath.

Melody blinked. "It's not a Hoppip at all… it's an Oddish!"

Mariah smiled with gentle fondness. "She's a neighborhood Pokémon. She spends so much time with my Hoppip that she wants to be just like them. She's been trying to fly for weeks."

As if to prove the point, the Oddish marched over to the chain-link fence, climbed several feet up the wire, and jumped. This time she landed in a soft pile of hay with a small, triumphant bounce.

Back at Mariah's modest cabin a short walk away, Misty and Melody sat on the porch steps trying to console the still-determined Oddish. Mariah was explaining more about her research when the seven Hoppip suddenly gathered in a tight circle and pressed their leaves together in a clear, urgent signal.

Mariah's expression changed at once. "That's the strongest grouping I've ever seen. A windstorm is coming possibly a tornado."

They moved quickly. Ash and the girls helped board the windows while Mariah ushered every Hoppip and the Oddish inside. Moments later the sky darkened and a low, rising roar filled the air.

Everyone crowded beneath the heavy wooden desk in the center of the main room. The girls instinctively curled close around Ash; Misty, Daisy, Erika, Melody, Giselle, and Sabrina pressed against him from all sides while he wrapped his arms around as many of them as he could reach. Pikachu, Eevee, and Togepi burrowed into the small safe space between them.

The tornado struck with sudden violence.

The roof tore away in a single explosive gust. The desk, the Oddish, and all seven Hoppip were lifted into the swirling air and carried out of sight. When the wind finally died, the walls of the cabin still stood, and everyone beneath the desk was unharmed though the sky now showed clearly overhead.

Ash rose first and offered Mariah a steady hand. "We'll help you find them."

The search began at once. They located the missing roof only a short distance away, snagged in a stand of trees. Oddish lay beside it, slightly battered and covered in leaves but otherwise unhurt.

The moment she saw Mariah she struggled upright and gave a determined "Oddish!"

Mariah knelt and gently checked her over. "She's always been able to find my Hoppip, no matter where the wind takes them. Once during a thunderstorm she tracked one that had been blown nearly a mile away."

True to that reputation, Oddish set off into the woods with clear purpose. The group followed. Before long she stopped at the base of a tall oak and pointed upward with a leaf. One Hoppip clung to a high branch, looking frightened but unharmed.

Ash stepped forward, eyes glowing faintly with Aura. A soft blue light wrapped around the Hoppip and lifted it gently from the branch, lowering it safely into Mariah's waiting arms.

Oddish continued without pause, leading them down a sloping path to a narrow river. A second Hoppip was tangled in a low branch that jutted out over the middle of the current. Misty handed Togepi to Daisy, kicked off her shoes, and waded in without hesitation.

The water reached her waist, but she kept her footing, freed the struggling Pokémon, and carried it back to shore with a triumphant grin.

"Two down," she announced, shaking water from her hair.

Farther along the trail Oddish suddenly stopped and stared at the open sky. A third Hoppip drifted high on a lingering current, spinning slowly out of reach.

Melody stepped forward and released her shiny Chikorita. The small green Pokémon's red eyes locked on the floating target.

"Vine Whip bring it down carefully!" Melody called.

Two green vines shot upward, wrapped gently around the Hoppip, and lowered it into Melody's hands. She smiled and scratched Chikorita's head in quiet praise.

With Oddish guiding them, the remaining four Hoppip were located one by one two tangled in bushes, one resting in a shallow ditch, and the last curled beneath an overturned cart. By the time the sun began to drop toward the horizon, all seven were safely gathered around Mariah once more.

The group stood together in the soft evening light while Mariah checked each of her Pokémon. Ash and the girls offered quiet praise to Oddish, who had stayed close to Melody and the shiny Chikorita throughout the final stretch of the search. The little Grass-type looked up at Melody with clear attachment.

Mariah noticed and smiled. "From this day on, you're an honorary Hoppip," she told Oddish solemnly. "You've earned it."

When the time came to say goodbye, Oddish made no move to return to the woods. She planted herself firmly beside Melody's feet and looked up with determined eyes. Melody glanced at Ash, uncertainty and hope mixed on her face.

Ash gave a small nod. "If she wants to go with you, you should ask her properly."

Melody knelt. "Oddish… would you like to come with me? Be my Pokémon?"

Oddish's answer was an immediate, happy bounce and a clear nod. Melody's Poké Ball tapped the little Pokémon's forehead in a soft flash of red light.

When the ball clicked, Melody let out a bright laugh, spun around, and threw her arms around Ash in a joyful hug.

"She's my second Pokémon!" she announced to the others, eyes shining.

Mariah stepped forward and congratulated her warmly. "Before you leave, would you release her one last time? There's something I want to say."

Melody did so. Oddish appeared and looked up at Mariah, who rested a gentle hand on the Pokémon's head.

"Wherever you travel," Mariah said, "you'll always be an honorary Hoppip. Don't ever forget that."

Oddish gave a soft, answering cry, then returned to Melody's side.

Final farewells were exchanged beneath the darkening sky. Mariah stood with her seven Hoppip clustered around her, watching as Ash and the girls turned back toward the main road.

Azalea Town still lay ahead, but the day had given them a new traveling companion and another reminder that even the smallest Pokémon could change the course of a journey.

With Oddish now riding contentedly on Melody's shoulder beside the shiny Chikorita, the group continued eastward, the wind calm and the path open before them.
