Chapter 33 - XXX. Alliance of Souls

Author's Note:

I'm so sorry for the chapter - extreme - delay. There were multiple factors for it, some personal and other related to the story itself.

Writing HLWC chapters take a lot of time, usually between 10 to 18 hours of dedicated time for longer chapters like this one, from writing to reviewing, especially due to me having to fact check myself a bunch of times due to my short-term memory lmao. So if I have a bad work schedule or a lot of personal appointments I end up not able to dedicate so much time to writing. And while my other stories I write on my phone most of the time - on work breaks lmao -, HLWC is worked solely on my computer as I need to have a bunch of other things open at the same time and the writing is way more complex.

Just wanted to explain a bit so you guys understand why chapters take so long and some get endlessly delayed. I am trying my best to update on time, so please bear with me while I adjust my work times, especially considering this past week and current one I've had really bad irl work schedules - 47h this week I am dying so bear with any mistakes that I've let it pass even with me reviewing this chapter twice.

I do not recommend taking a break mid-chapter, although it is a long chapter, please read it in its entirety at once.

Thank you for keeping up with my story, it means the world to me.

Enjoy the chapter :)

"What are soulmates made of? What does being soulmates actually mean? If the god of Love were asked he'd say that soulmates are two souls meant to meet and love each other regardless of social construct or circumstance. However if you were to ask the god of Destiny, he'd say that being soulmates is the ultimate gift of the universe, something beyond the control of gods, a state of soul where one soul compliments another perfectly, like two sides of the same burning star. Regardless of its true meaning, being able to meet the other soul that perfectly matches yours is a cause for celebration, rare and magnificent, meeting your soulmate is an event one will never forget even as seasons pass and worlds change".

''Stay and sleep'', Rainier's hoarse voice is like a whisper as he hugs his boyfriend from behind and is ignored, as the older man shoves his arms away quickly. ''You'll collapse at this point.'' He insists with a sigh as his red eyes watch Lowe getting up from his bed and dressing himself.

''I have a lot to do, the engagement party is in…'', the man glances at the watch on his wrist, another gift from Rainier, he seems to be getting a lot of those recently, and even if he refuses them at first, Lowe always seems to give in eventually. ''Sixteen hours''.

Rainier gets up from the bed, walking behind his frantic boyfriend, his whole naked body exposed in the badly lit room. ''Lowe, it's the middle of the night, you need to sleep''. He continues to insist, and after the man ignores his words again he touches the man's hand softly. ''You'll do better if you just sleep for a while, I'll take you to the Palace myself in a while, at least four hours, please''.

Lowe shakes his head. ''No, I need to check everything, and the food especially, I can't risk a surprise attack like the one at the Crown Prince's''.

''Why would they attack the Second Prince?''

''Because he…'', Lowe stops in the middle of buttoning up his shirt with a sigh. ''He pissed off a few people with his invitations''.

''Who didn't he invite?'' Rainier asks, helping Lowe with his blazer.

''The new Duke Sawdon, the Whisperia Royals… And some others, he even made sure his Knights would stop their entry if they even attempted to attend''.

''Do you need help?'' His words are soft as he adjusts the back of Lowe's collar.

The man seems to ponder his offer, but in the end he shakes his head. ''You already have your hands full with the new recruits of the Silver Crows''.

''It's something I can push back one day, and I am attending the party as well'', Rainier says, leaning his head onto Lowe's shoulder. ''I'm worried about your health, pup''.

For the past week the man has been chugging down constitution potions to help his lack of sleep, and even accepted one of Fleuri's special drinks made of mostly espresso shots. But that wasn't the only thing worrying Rainier, no, it was the fact that for the last month, Lowe refused to sleep next to him a single night. As if they're back at score one of when they were simply having sexual relations with each other.

''I'll sleep after the party'', Lowe remains firm in his resolve.

''You'll have the day off tomorrow?'' Rainier asks, his hand going to Lowe's face, pulling the man's gaze towards his own. ''Let's go out, a date''.

Lowe's face becomes slightly red, but Rainier can't notice it due to the poor illumination inside the room. ''I have other…''

''Are you mad at me?'' Rainier cuts him off with his question, frowning and backing off from the man. ''Is it because of the honeymoon? Or about the death thing again?''

It wasn't his intention, it never is. To bring back the subject, to talk about it again and again, and fair enough, he managed to stay a whole month without talking about it. Of course he was bothered by Rainier's duty of accompanying the newlyweds in their honeymoon, it was extremely cruel and stupid. How could Prince Alkaios ask that of him? How could he accept it?

They never discussed it, how could Lowe bring it up? Why did you stay in front of the door where your childhood crush was being fucked by your best friend? Why did you accompany them to their honeymoon where they were basking in their love right in front of your eyes? Do you still regret it? Do you still have feelings for her? He didn't ask that because he knows the answer to all of those questions. And the answer won't make him feel any better.

Knowing why won't change anything.

Even after one year. One year.

Nothing changed. At least in Lowe's eye.

In Rainier's perception, though, everything changed. They have only one year left in their agreement, and the red-haired man already wants to beg for an extension he knows he can't afford.

He knows his father will do all in his power to make sure Rainier marries yet never has an heir, his hands tied due to the Emperor endorsing his relationship with the butler, but once they break up, he won't be able to escape it.

Break up… I don't think I can do that, he thinks, aware of how much he's grown to care and love Lowe, he'll never say it out loud, he knows Lowe would panic and back off from it all. Because they promised to have a temporary relationship, it all hurts even more.

It's hard not to remember what Lowe said that day they started their relationship: I don't think I can love you.

Yes, again, again and again, why does he always fall for those who won't love him back? And although he did know what would happen, knowing he will never be loved by those he loves so much, is heartbreaking.

But even knowing, he can't allow them to lose this next year, to not enjoy it all. Especially as he knows how it'll end.

Dying at the end of it all it'll only be poetic and somehow a relief.

He won't admit to it though.

He can't even bring himself to tell Lowe that he hasn't had butterflies for Evangelia in a good while, it's better to pretend to still like someone else than admitting he wishes to fully dive himself into Lowe.

Lowe takes a deep breath, sitting on the edge of the bed. ''Rainier, there's a reason why I avoided talking about this, everytime I do we end up arguing''.

''So you are upset at me.''

''No.'' Lowe sighs. ''At least not…'' He pauses, closing his eyes, debating what to say next. Saying he got used to Rainier in his life now, that he dreads the moment they'll be apart because he'll be alone again, admitting that even though he's upset he still comes to his house, to his room, because being alone in his cold room is unbearable. That he came to miss his presence, his voice, his scent… No. It's just like when the Prince died. His world collapsed and yet all he did was think about escaping.

Just like all the other children at the Tower used to say, he has no feelings. No feelings except for his beloved brother. Everything will be just fine as long as they're alive.

But what if it isn't?

What if Rainier dying will hurt just as much as if Raphael died?

Just the mere thought, just thinking about it, his heart clenches so much it physically hurts.

He never named this feeling, this dread.

Because it doesn't make sense to him, to feel something towards someone that isn't family. Rainier will leave one day, they have nothing tying them together.

Would it be easier if we started this like others do? If I were normal? If…

No, it wouldn't. Of course nothing would be easy.

''Lowe, talk to me'', Rainier kneels in front of him, the vision of the tall buff man kneeling naked in front of him just makes Lowe feel uncomfortable, a pang in his stomach.

''Why? You'll only say the same things'', Lowe diverts his gaze towards the floor. ''There's no point Rainier, you're set on leaving me''. No, I didn't mean that.

''Leave you? Lowe, I'm not doing that!'' Rainier touches Lowe's hands, his voice sounding like a plea. ''Dying due to duty, just because I said I would be fine doing so, doesn't mean I don't care if I live or die'', he's lying, they both know that.

''Then why won't you try to fight it? Find a solution? You even refuses to listen how it will happen or when.'' Lowe can't help but raise his voice. ''It's exhausting having to imagine everyday as I close my eyes how life will be when you…'' He pauses, he's getting too emotional, ha, when did he become an emotional person?

''Our two years will have ended by then'', Rainier argues, making Lowe snort.

''Oh, so it'll be fine because we won't be together anymore? It's fine if you die because I'll be in another Kingdom, far away?'' Lowe yells. ''Rainier, you'll die a month before Nikias' marriage! We'll still be together, or you plan on breaking us up before I can get hurt by your death? No, perhaps you think I'll be fine just because I'm not her''.

It's so easy to cross a line you set yourself. Especially when the line is something as easy as a word. Her. The woman you love.

''What' does that mean? Lowe, she has nothing to do with us!''

''She has everything to do with us Rainier, or your hyperthymesia is failing you right now?'' Lowe says with a mocking tone.

''Stop bringing her up when I don't care about her anymore!'' Rainier says, leaning onto Lowe's lap. ''She's only a friend now''.

''A friend you still watch from afar with loving eyes'', Lowe says, in the back of his head he knows he should stop talking and go to the Palace, he's wasting precious time here, but his legs feel heavy and not because Rainier is leaning against them. ''You think I can't see it? The look in your face during the marriage?''

''My face? What face you're talking about?''

''The sadness Rainier! The regret!''

''That wasn't because of her!'' Rainier raises his head, his red eyes meeting Lowe's light brown ones. Both of their hearts hurt. A discussion none will leave victorious, but both will end up hurt. That's how all of these discussions end.

''Explain then, why were you looking at her with longing in your eyes?''

Because I was sad we'll never marry, that I'll never have what they have, and that in one year I won't be with you anymore. Rainier doesn't say that. ''It was the marriage of two friends, I simply found the ceremony touching''.

''Even if that were true, it doesn't erase the fact that you keep belittling my worries''.

''I'm not doing that, I just can't understand Lowe, we'll be apart anyway so why…''

Lowe interrupts Rainier, grabbing the man's arms, his knuckles going white from how strong his grip is and the room being filled with his dark mana. Rainier can feel his insides hurting due to the poison and healing right away, but despite the pain he can't avoid frowning over Lowe's expression. An expression of anger and pain, an expression so emotional that is just as lovely as it is frightening.

''Stop!'' Lowe yells, ''Stop saying that'', he continues, now in a soft mumble. ''What if… I was the one to die, would you be fine? I told you, I told you that I might become attached, that I never had a relationship apart from Raphael and Prince Nikias. You asked me to be your solace and for you to become mine. Yet you keep speaking as if this relationship is merely…'' Lowe closes his eyes, he was never good at keeping his words inside his chest for long. ''I know we agreed, two years, and I'm fine with that, but I never intended for death to be how this ends''.

''I won't die easily''.

''That's not the point Rainier, of course you won't die easily, that's why it's worrying, that's why we must try to fight it. What possibly could be worthy dying for?''

''My duty to the Prince…'' Rainier attempts to speak, but is cut off again.

''Right, the Crown Prince, the person more important than even yourself'', Lowe's voice can't help but drip with bitterness. ''It's okay to leave me behind if it is to save him, because he's the important one''.

Since when is he so bitter? Why is he so angry about this?

''Lowe, I meant it when I said I belong to you'', Rainier gets up, touching Lowe's face softly. ''But my duty as a Knight will always be my priority, this is the only thing I know how to do well''.

''What about me? What about your promise? You said you'd stay with me forever'', Lowe feels like crying, when was the last time he felt so… defeated?

''Our forever would only last two years, pretending otherwise was stupid of me'', Rainier says, shaking his head, his words are hurtful, but his eyes show he's hurting just as much as Lowe with his own words. Then why say them? Lowe thinks.

''Fine'', Lowe says, getting up, backing away from the other, grabbing his other things and putting his shoes on. ''If I'm going to be alone now or in one year, what difference does it make?''

''Wait… Lowe'', Rainier says, slightly panicked, grabbing Lowe's arm.

His gaze goes to the Knight's arm, bruised from his grip a while ago, then to his red eyes, showing pain and sorrow, then his hand on his arm, trembling. ''We should take a break, that doesn't mean I won't do whatever it takes to make sure you're alive'', Lowe says calmly, although he feels like yelling again. ''I'll keep doing whatever I want, Rainier, while you bask in your own conformism. Having a relationship with a time limit doesn't mean you get to define everything by yourself''.

''I wasn't trying to''.

''Yet that's what you did, wasn't it? Claiming your duty is the only thing that gives you meaning, that our relationship is ending anyway so it doesn't matter if you die at the end. This is all one-sided. I keep telling you I won't be fine if you die, that I want you to live, but you ignore it. Empty promises of being by my side, so that we both won't be alone. You say you're scared of dying alone, yet that's exactly what you're accepting to do, isn't it?''.

Lowe's words make Rainier's heart drop, his hand sliding off his arm, his eyes watering from despair.

''That doesn't mean I don't want to be with you, Lowe I…''

''I also have my duty, Rainier, but I wouldn't leave you or Raphael just because my duty so requires, that's selfish, you know''. Lowe says, walking towards the door. ''We'll talk again after we both have time to cool off our thoughts, until then, let's not meet each other''.

After those words Lowe leaves without even hesitating, the sound of the door closing makes Rainier flinch, frozen in place, staring at where Lowe was just moments before.

And there he stays, tears flowing from his eyes, until the sun rises.

''I still believe this party is a mistake, your majesty'', the words coming from Priest Saurav don't reach Lyor's heart. ''We have our own customs, why is the party being held in another Empire that doesn't share our beliefs? He's the one marrying into our Kingdom, not the other way around.''

''And on the day of the Light Festival nonetheless'', Priest Cessair complements the other's words, it seems they can only agree when it comes to criticizing Prince Nikias' choices.

''It was an agreement we made since the start'', Lyor insists as he stares at himself in the mirror, the maids assisting him with his clothes in silence. ''If you dislike it so much, you're not obligated to attend''.

''You know we must either way'', Saurav says, annoyed. ''If we don't, the people will talk''.

''Then stop talking as if anything will change'', Lyor says coldly, his head hurting more than normal, but he needs to keep it in, he'll do the change just a day later, it'll be fine. His head always throbs when he uses one mana more than the other, that's why he opted for splitting the two types of barriers in different moments of the year. But now he's delaying it due to his own engagement.

Sure he could do it even without the festival, and no one would be angry or upset at him for that, however he felt like it wouldn't be appropriate, and he wouldn't be able to focus on the party if he used so much mana before it.

''Aren't the people upset over the date change of the festival?'' Saurav asks, with a heavy sigh. ''You must put the citizens first, your majesty''.

He's only saying that so that Lyor will cave, he knows quite well Lyor cares about every single subject.

''Everyone is simply pleased to be able to see the party due to Dame Seoah's help'', one of the maids says with an excited tone, interrupting their conversation, only being allowed to do so due to Lyor's relaxed approach with his own employees. ''My family is even hosting a banquet with our neighbors to watch''.

Lyor smiles. ''That's nice to hear, Juliet.''

The maid blushes with her name being said by the King, continuing her work with a blissful expression.

''Fine, I give up'', the Priest says, turning to leave the room. ''Just make sure he doesn't disrespect the gods''.

''Even if he did, I wouldn't be upset at him for it''. Lyor says firmly.

As the two Priests leave the room, Cypress enters accompanied by Keres soon after. ''They really must hate his highness'', Keres says with a frown.

They're both already dressed for the party, Keres using a more fancy version of her usual Priestess robe, the tones of silver shining brightly with the image of the Darkness goddess and her creations, the Dragons. Whilst her full body is still covered, she's wearing silver earrings shaped like Dragon's wings, that are beautifully complimented by her almost fully shaved black hair making her look wiser.

''You know why'', Cypress says, sitting down where the Priests were before, staring at Lyor as he gets dressed. ''I thought his highness had bad taste with how he normally dresses, but he did choose a proper attire for you'', he comments.

''He looks good in whatever he wears'', Lyor says with a chuckle.

''That's because you're just as hopeless as him with all your fur coats'', Cypress scoffs.

''Nikias said he likes my coats'', Lyor says with a soft smile, nothing could truly ruin his mood today, not even Cypress remarks or the Priests annoying comments.

''You're both blind'', the aide says, frowning. He, on the other hand is wearing a more simple yet elegant attire, cream dress shoes, dark green pants that match his coat, which reaches the middle of his thighs, a white dress shirt and a cream colored vest with silver buttons, instead of the usual tie he's also wearing a dark green scarf. Cypress' green hair is down, styled in elegant waves that make his features appear softer than usual, helped by the make-up one of the maids assisted him with to hide his egregious dark circles.

''Being knowledgeable in fashion won't help rule a nation'' Lyor says softly as he thanks the maids after they finish dressing him. ''And today avoid expressing dissatisfaction with Nikias''.

''I'm won't Lyor, there's a limit, I'm aware of that'', Cypress says, leaning back onto the sofa, ''How many hours does the ceremony take?''

''Ten'', Keres is the one to answer. ''It's a complicated process since it's the engagement of a Prince and a King, even more considering his highness will be going through all of the blessings''.

''How you know all that?'' Cypress asks, surprised.

''I was exchanging letters with his highness aide and butler'', Keres says, ''We need to be on the same page for when they come to the Kingdom''.

''Who'll be going with us?'' Cypress changes the subject.

''All of the Spectres, Priest Saurav, Priest Cessair and both of you'', Lyor says, opening his drawer to search for the charm he got from the Prince the year before, placing it on the side of his belt.

''Won't Leora be upset for not being invited?'' Keres asks with a smile, clearly happy for not having the other Priestess accompanying them.

''She knows why she wasn't invited'', Cypress comments. ''After getting on his highness bad side…''

''Of course, that naive girl would''. Keres shakes her head.

''Lyor, it's your last chance, are you sure about this? About tying yourself to him? There's no going back after the ceremony'', Cypress says, clearly nervous about the situation, although he has come around about the Prince in the last months they've been collaborating, he still is unsure if they are the right person for each other.

They're both so different, Prince Nikias is unruly, he dresses like a commoner, he acts like a conceited noble and schemes like a fairytale villain, and Lyor is a just and righteous King, sacrificing himself to save those enslaved in other nations, while one lives for themselves the other lives selflessly.

''Cypress, although I do wish for you to understand Nikias' positive side, I am also aware of his flaws.'' He says, his eyes glowing as he stares through the window at the people of Lau, all bustling with excitement for their King's engagement. ''And so is he. A person aware of their shortcomings, aware of their misdeeds and that does much more than it admits, is much better than me, who lives behind a sword chained to a crown I do not fit''.

Lyor's words startle Cypress, he is somewhat aware of why the King acts the way he does, and why he prefers going out to war than going through paperwork. The fact that Lyor never wished to be King, that although he loves his people, the responsibilities he carries were never his goal. Turning the Kingdom into an Empire is the consequence of his so-called expansion wars, in truth, not many people are fully aware that he is doing so to free slaves. Every good deed Lyor does, people attribute to his position, his sainthood, when in fact he does that so that he feels worthy of the crown in his head, weighting heavily every single day.

The shape burned in his head, the consequences of his actions embroidered in his brain and the screams of pain and despair of his people echoing in his dreams. He'll always be lacking, he'll never be perfect, he'll never be kind enough, strong enough, wise enough. And to him, that is his fatal flaw.

In comparison, Nikias was everything he wished he was, wise, unapologetic and in control of himself, aware of his position, its weights, and while claiming to act selfishlessly he keeps helping those who can't help themselves. Actions that speak louder than a fanfare, Prince Nikias might not be brandishing a sword, but his goal is just as noble.

Or perhaps, those are just the thoughts of a man that is watching the Prince behind rose-tinted glasses.

''Your majesty…'' Cypress tries to speak, to claim that Lyor is a good King, but he can't as the man himself raises his hand, stopping his words.

''We must go, for today, allow me to be solely a man getting engaged to someone he loves, not a King forging an alliance'', his words are followed by a sad smile, the other two present nod, understanding Lyor's feelings.

When one is in a position of power, love also becomes an act of politics.

Nikias silently stares at those words, he's reading a book Lyor gave him, A Study of Love, the man probably didn't mean much when giving him that, just one of the many books the King enjoys reading in his free time. But differently from the other books he read under the man's recommendation, this one resonates with Nikias the most.

Feelings are subjected to individual's will, one can fall in love if so they condition themselves to, one can harbor hate if so they believe to feel, however they're also subjected to unpredictable feelings, those one cannot control, because although one can fall out of love with enough will, having the will to do so, isn't something most would.

Love can be both despairing and blissful, it all depends on your view into your own life and goals.

Every passage he reads he feels his heart becoming heavier. A year ago, he was desperate, desperate to survive, to make this new life work, clinging to the possibility of living a proper life. Then his memories devastate him and he becomes unsure if he even is worthy of being alive and happy. With mere words his mood shifts, with failures and victories his stance in the matter fluctuates.

Can he let go?

Trust?

When he asked for this ceremony, Lyor didn't even hesitate to accept, a procedure different from a mana pact. A promise made in front of the gods even before they marry.

Intertwining their souls forever.

Something they're only able to do due to Jiwon's mana.

But he wants to feel free to be next to Lyor without this insane worry that he'll be abandoned and hurt. I can't be sure I will never regret this decision, and we might come to hate each other with the years, however now I need this marriage, I need to escape this place, this life that isn't mine. Nikias thinks, placing the book back on his desk, looking at the window, watching as carriages arrive, and the guests start pouring in. Contrary to his birthday where a lot of nobles didn't attend due to their displeasure with the Prince, the same can't be done with his engagement.

Not because of him, but the man he is going to be engaged with.

This time, even some Kings and Queens will be attending, since their wedding itself will be in the Morke Kingdom, where due to their isolation they don't allow other rulers to enter. So they'll come to the engagement, curious about the King very few ever actually saw in person.

Entourages of other nations were received throughout the past week, making the Empress and Crown Princess Evangelia extremely busy, but the man himself, Prince Nikias, has yet to show face to any of them.

One of the customs before an engagement is to lockdown the Palace, however since they had a lot of foreign guests, the one to be isolated was Nikias himself, remaining inside his room, only receiving visits from Fleuri and Lowe for reports, his door guarded by his Knights day and night.

So now, he'll finally step outside, and at the end of this day he'll finally be engaged to Lyor.

He stands in front of one of the mirrors in his room, staring at the reflection that no longer is foreign, eyes that he now came to accept as his, a hair he became comfortable with and delicate skin he became used to. A body that will never be fully his, but that now he can fully accept as himself.

A soft knock before Lowe opens the door, Nikias turns to look at his butler, Lowe is dressed in a fancy suit Nikias bought him for the job, even white gloves that give him the perfect butler look, his dark circles are hidden with mana and his light brown hair styled back. ''Your highness, it's time''.

Taking a deep breath to avoid his nervousness to show, Nikias nods and follows Lowe, when he leaves the room, Dacre and Scarlet appear, wearing their Golden Phoenices formal attire, they look like proper Knights following their Lord. And indeed, from the point of view of those crossing their path as they walk towards the ballroom, Nikias finally looks like a Prince, no, some might even claim he looked like a ruler, exuding power and elegance.

''How's Sir Jiwon?'' Nikias asks, the closer he is to the Sun ballroom the more his heart pounds inside his chest.

''Well…'' Dacre says, tilting his head, looking outside the windows as they walk by them in the corridors, his complexion isn't much better than the others working for the Second Prince, considering his carefree personality, it isn't usual for Dacre to spend nights awake. But perhaps the closer the Prince comes to becoming a Consort, the closer he becomes restless, worried about his place next to Nikias in the future, be it as a friend or as a Knight. He has nothing to worry about, though, since the Prince has no other friends whatsoever to replace him with. ''He was quite upset for being told to do this one-sidedly, but apparently he received the god's approval…''

Dacre's words surprise Nikias, he would never expect a god to be on his side, especially due to the amount of hostility he felt from the goddess of Darkness and the Priests surrounding the Morke Kingdom.

''That's good'', Nikias says simply, trying not to showcase how nervous he is.

''Don't worry so much Nikki, everything will work out'', Dacre whispers, making the Prince's gaze go to him, the pink-haired Knight smiles, and in response Nikias lets out a soft smile as well, just for a split second, feeling relief inside his heart. The feeling of not being alone. He doesn't trust Dacre fully, no, he doesn't trust anyone fully, but it is true he feels more comfortable around the young man compared to his other subordinates. ''Jiwon prepared thoroughly, Lowe worked his ass off, and we're all in high-allert, your highness, so you can rest assured, we wish for you to have a pleasurable engagement party''.

''Irene spent the night placing magic circles around the ballroom, I even saw Miyuki mumbling about security devices'', Scarlet speaks, ''Your highness, we're here to protect you too, so enjoy your party and your beloved's company''.

Her words make him feel touched, but it doesn't fully erase his worries, that's impossible after all. However, his heartbeat does slow down for just a second.

On the other hand, inside the ballroom, every guest that was supposed to arrive is already there, the place bustling with music and chatter. Even the Emperor and Empress, this time, have arrived before the main couple.

If we were to compare Nikias' engagement to Crown Prince Alkaios' one, many would say that Nikias' is not only more lavish, but also of more importance. Although in his engagement Alkaios and Evangelia were the star, they were still simply Crown Prince and Princess, their place still laid under the Emperor and Empress.

However, in this engagement, the Exos Empire, the Palace and the Sun ballroom are mere locations, for the next ten hours, in that room, the Emperor and Empress aren't the most important people in the room.

They are merely hosting the Morke King's engagement.

And that was Nikias' agreement with both the King and the Empress. A moment where the Sun ballroom becomes neutral ground, otherwise, the engagement party would need to be held in the Morke Kingdom, and that wouldn't be feasible, as that would put the Exos Empire itself in a precarious situation by being seen as mocking the authority of another ruler. Even if one is an Empire and the other a Kingdom, there's still the Sacred Law in place.

Oh, of course.

What is the Sacred Law?

Something even Nikias has learnt recently, as the novel never dwelled much into this kind of politics, and since his endeavours were too focused inside the Empire, he had the opportunity to learn about this only recently.

First Emperor Aelius Exos Chrysl, his list of feats are… Well, quite remarkable and extensive for someone that died so young. Especially after banishing Vremes, the man was known to work efficiently and relentlessly. Not only creating a Universal Language, establishing new magic engineering creations, expanding the Empire's allies and even managing to revitalize the devastated nation due to the war at an unprecedented pace, but he also excelled in convincing his enemies in signing never ending treaties.

By pure fear, of course, who would be crazy to not sign a treaty with a man that assisted gods into banishing the god of Time itself?

The Sacred Law was one of those treaties, a Law that claims that any nation existing or that comes to exist under the shade of gods must respect three rules:

First, before engaging in territory expansion war, one must send a reasonable letter to the other nation with a proposal of peace, if the conditions are unreasonable, the nation can request aid from other nations, and it must be helped if those nations are able to, whichever the response, must be respected, nations that accept the conditions must be given peace, and nations that choose to not accept peace, can be invaded and conquered, if so they are, however if they accept peace and are still invaded the invading nation must be subjected to purging by other peaceful nations, and its territory split between the winning nations. Such a decision must be approved by the majority of nations.

Second, all sovereigns must respect each other's territory, laws, customs and authority, if so isn't respected a council of nations can be summoned and said sovereign can be deposed through death.

Third, any and whatever change in nations territory, title, etc, that affects other nations than oneself, must be approved by the majority of other nations, if not the sovereign of the unlawful nation can be deposed through death.

That is also why this party is so important to Lyor, as he must show himself as a reliable and respectful ruler, in order to have other sovereigns to accept the transition of the Morke Kingdom into an Empire.

Therefore, during the engagement party, the biggest authority in the room is no one other than King Lyor Natrix Noir himself.

Perhaps that is also why everyone present seems both eager and restless, worried and curious, some that only ever saw the King in other Empire events wondering how he'll act now that he has the authority, whilst others that never saw the King before wonder how the man whose feats reach even their nations is.

The so-called Tyrant by the newspapers, just due to his rapid and effective conquest.

''You look awful'', inside the ballroom, Crown Prince Alkaios leans against a wall, holding a glass of white wine while looking at his best friend, who's face is…

Just as the Prince said: awful. His eyes are bloodshot, his complexion pale like a ghost, and his usual cold and elegant demeanor is nowhere to be seen, his clothes are slightly misaligned, his tie missing, and if someone paid attention would see the man's socks are of two different tones of grey. His hair isn't even styled, almost as if he spent the whole morning drinking and came to the party incredibly wasted.

Although Rainier didn't touch a single drop of alcohol, not only the man hadn't slept at all since Lowe left his house, but he also cried for hours, exhausting himself out of heartbreak. ''My apologies, Kai, but I am not in the mood to talk right now'', Rainier says, taking a deep breath as he takes a glass of white wine from one of the maids working, his words jumbled, mixing his formal tone with casual one, not even aware he called his friend by his nickname.

''What happened?'' Alkaios asks, his tone shifting from amusement to worry.

''Nothing'', Rainier answers, his gaze going from his already empty glass to the other side of the ballroom where Lowe was a moment ago, waiting for the man to come back so that he can watch him from a distance just a while longer. Was he using mana to hide his bad complexion again? He thinks, not able to help himself.

''Clearly something happened'', this time the one who speaks is Evangelia, after the marriage she has been looking more restless, worried, her actions had become more frantic and desperate, as if she was waiting for something big to happen soon, but tonight she looks more calm than ever, wearing a white dress with red lace, even her make-up is more mature than usual. Something an unmarried woman wouldn't dare use before, realizing that, however, doesn't bother Rainier as much as it would before, since being married suits her just as much.

Rainier sighs. ''Nothing of note''.

''Excuse me'', an unfamiliar voice catches the attention of the three friends. ''Are you perhaps, Sir Rainier Bauldry?'' The woman in question is no one but Keres Draeger herself, wandering around seeing the Palace she only heard before from Cypress and Lyor's retellings. And of course the only person besides the entourage from the Morke Kingdom, that she recognized right away was someone she was only described through letters.

''That's correct, and who might you be?'' Rainier's tone is more serious, and although his appearance is unkept, he straightens his posture, looking at the woman with suspicion.

As she is not only clearly a halfling, but also a citizen from another nation whom none of the three present recognize.

''Oh, of course, I'm Keres Draeger, nice to meet you, I'm King Lyor's butler, and a Priestess of the Temple of Darkness'', she introduces herself with a bow. ''I am pleased to meet the stars of the Empire and you Sir Bauldry''.

Alkaios nods towards the woman, and Evangelia is the first to ask: ''How did you recognize Rainier?''

''His features are quite eye-catching, and I tend to exchange a lot of letters with both Fleuri and Lowe, Sir Rainier came up a few times'', she answers with a cryptic smile, her purple eyes with slit pupil bring shivers down the others' spines, after all, not everyone is used to being face-to-face with a dragon halfling.

Although they're all wary, Rainier couldn't help himself due to his already fragile state of mind, he couldn't avoid but ask: ''Lowe spoke of me?''

Keres nods. ''A few times, we talk a lot about how the transfer of work between the Empire and the Kingdom will proceed after the marriage''.

''How did even his name come up in said context?'' Evangelia asks, slightly suspicious, it doesn't help that she doesn't have any information on the subordinates of the King of Morke.

''Huh? I thought it was quite…'', Keres is cut short by another woman.

''Keres, Priest Cessair is calling for you'', Hayun's voice and appearance startles Alkaios the most, of course it does, from all of the surprise guests he has seen, she is by far the most surprising one. Is she here knowing there are Princes from the Hai Empire here? Do they even know she's still alive? The true question is: How did she end up in the Morke Kingdom? Much more working for the King himself? What even are these people surrounding him?

The Princess of the fallen Angae Kingdom isn't even trying to hide her heritage, wearing a silk green dress with details in red embroidery and a bright golden brooch with the symbol of her fallen Kingdom next to another with the symbol of the Morke Kingdom, her hair up in a bun with a butterfly hairpin and even the white lace covering her missing eyes is clearly from the fallen Kingdom. Her clothes, her presence, is a political statement that Alkaios is sure it'll piss off the Hai Empire.

Is Nikias even aware of how harmful this will be in the long run?

What he isn't aware of is Nikias' calculation behind every move he'll take this day.

''Right, it's about time'', Keres mumbles, looking at her pocket watch. ''Well, it was a pleasure Sir Bauldry, your highnesses, hopefully we'll see each other at the wedding, and I wish you and Lowe the goddess' blessings, even if you do not follow her teachings'', the woman bows and leaves following Hayun.

''Was that…?'' Evangelia asks, startled.

''Yes'', Alkaios answers with a sigh, placing his half-full glass down and grabbing his wife's waist. ''Be careful today'', he whispers in her ear before placing a kiss on her temple. ''We must go to father and mother, it seems they'll enter soon'', he says gazing at Rainier, who looks trapped inside his own brain. ''Rainier, talk with me later, we're friends first and foremost'', he taps the man's shoulder but he doesn't reply.

Giving up, Alkaios moves with Evangelia towards where the Emperor and Empress are.

''This atmosphere is making me too nervous'', Miyuki comments, his legs shaking, although he is standing near the balcony in a hidden location, he can't help but feel restless with the amount of people there.

''Focus, we need to take care of the magic circles, make sure not a single one of them is disarmed'', Irene says, looking around, just as restless as Miyuki, she covered every single inch of that ballroom with protection circles, but due to her mana being inherently more destructive, the circles aren't perfect. Of course, they're perfectly executed, but any magician could disable them with time and finesse.

''So you were the ones that made those'', a chilling voice startles the two magicians, from the balcony behind them, Nicholas Larchier stands calmly, his chilling green eyes staring at them, his gaze looking down, as if he's looking at insects. ''They're not powerful, but they're technically flawless'', it takes Irene a few seconds to recognize the man, but the moment she does, the woman blushes, not that anyone can notice due to her skin-tone, but even so, she feels her cheeks burning with the compliment.

Because although Nikias suspects and has a strong distaste towards Margrave, it doesn't take away the fact that he's one of the most accomplished magicians of the Exos Empire, at such a young age as well.

So receiving a compliment about her magic by such an amazing magician is the highest compliment Irene ever received.

''It is quite easy to dispel it, though'', Nicholas says with a smirk as he places his hand on top of one of the circles, making it disappear in mere seconds.

''Hey!'' Miyuki protests, stumbling towards the Margrave, shoving the man before doing the circle again. ''Don't mess around with those''.

''Hey?'' Margrave Larchier asks, his voice makes Miyuki's whole body tremble, but the half-vampire doesn't move. ''You're quite bold for a half-wit'', he backs off, looking at the two magicians. ''Why are you going this far? The Prince and the King can protect themselves if worse is to come''.

''It's not solely for their protection'', Irene is the one to answer, becoming annoyed with the Margrave's words, forgetting all about her respect for him just moments before. ''We wish for the Prince to have a day without worries, for at least just one day''.

''Worries?'' Nicholas asks, genuinely curious, however his tone comes out more mockful than anything.

''It is not of your concern'', Miyuki says, his eyes showing clear hostility. ''If you do not wish for us to escort you out, please refrain from touching the magic circles'', he says, managing to not stumble on his words, probably due to his fervent anger, after all, he and Irene worked hard for those protection circles, with nothing but good wishes for the Prince.

Margrave Larchier laughs. ''Prince Nikias is lucky with his allies'', he comments, ''I, for one'', he says, placing his hand on the rail near them, looking down at the bustling ballroom. ''Am also one of his allies''.

Although Nikias would shudder and deny such a fact, it's better to let the man have those delusions.

As a faint shine leaves his hands and covers the entire ballroom, unbeknownst to the others besides the three magicians standing there, placing a more sturdy magic circle all over the ballroom.

''Perhaps with this he'll grace me with more of his favors'', Nicholas smiles, leaving Irene and Miyuki completely confused and dumbfounded.

''He's a weird person'', Miyuki comments.

Irene nods. ''Impressive and magnificent, but he looks absolutely mad''.

There is, however, no more time to dwell in what happened, as the music stops and a loud voice is projected through the ballroom.

''Entering, his majesty, King Lyor Natrix Noir, sovereign of the Morke Kingdom, and his fiance, his highness, Prince Nikias Gregor Chrysl, second star of the Exos Empire''.

Slowly as the door opens, the two men's hearts beat loudly inside their chests, for completely different yet similar reasons.

Lyor's due to his excitement to be engaged to Nikias.

And Nikias' due to his anxiety with making sure his engagement is perfect from beginning to end.

For a moment, when the people inside that shining sun-lit ballroom stare at them, Nikias' world becomes silent. His hand on Lyor's trembles slightly, his golden eyes analyzing every corner of the well-decorated ballroom.

The place feels and looks completely different from Alkaios' marriage party, or even his engagement party. Although the Sun ballroom has its name due to the yellow mana stones on the ceiling, today the ceiling is open, with a glass that allows the sun to bask inside the room and the gold in every corner shining brightly as the sun reflects onto it, during the Crown Prince's parties, the sunlight wasn't as prominent and as blinding as in that moment.

There are no tacky decorations, the white silk is practically transparent, diffusing the sunlight passing through it, the whole place smells like sunlight, even with the crowd of nobles overusing perfumes, the tables are elegant and well-distributed with snacks and drinks made using produce from Nikias' store, and near the end of the stairs, where a temporary white marble altar is, there is two cloths atop, one dark with the symbol of the Morke Kingdom embroidered in silver, and another red with the Exos Empire symbol embroidered in gold.

Every single decoration is well-thought of, every placement of drinks and food is planned to perfection, even the occasional maids walking through the crowd wearing all-black are inconspicuous enough to be almost invisible, not conflicting with the atmosphere. Even on the side, where the musicians are placed, their black and gold clothes, the more mellow instruments that cater to Nikias' tastes.

A perfect atmosphere, that reflects perfectly their union, for peace, for Nikias' survival, and for…

Devotion.

Towards each other, towards their future and towards the future of the Morke Kingdom.

However the perfect environment isn't the only thing that went perfectly, their clothes also reflect their union harmoniously.

Lyor, whose clothes were planned by Nikias, is wearing all-black, from the buttoned shirt, the tie, the vest, his pants, belt, dress shoes and even his gloves. And his black coat has golden buttons that are decorated with the crest of his nation, accompanied by a long cape reaching his ankle, that although is also black, has at its back in gold also the crest of the Kingdom. For jewelry, he's wearing the same single earring of his sword, the charm he got from Nikias' on his belt and a small golden clip shaped like the sun in his tie. His black hair is slicked back, and his face is calm with a soft smile, making his heterochromatic eyes shine, his almost transparent skin makes his neck veins pop, giving him even a more eye-catching look. However what completes his appearance is the crown, which he rarely ever uses by claiming to be bothersome, although the crown of the Morke Kingdom is humbler compared to other nations, the piece is still mesmerizing, made with Moonlight Silver, fitting his head perfectly, its composed of thirteen eight sided stars with light mana stones at each of its centers and between the stars there is the shape of dragon's wings and at the bottom is the shape of various hands holding each other.

The story behind the crown of the King of Morke is one for another day, however, it was made by the very first King with the blessing of both gods and the assistance of the Temple.

Suffice to say that there was no one inside the ballroom able to stand out more than the King himself.

Well, that would be true, if the man by his side wasn't Nikias.

The Prince isn't simply handsome or beautiful today, no, he is, by all means, as mesmerizing as the Sun itself. His clothes are a perfect match to Lyor's despite the different design, completely black from head to toe, with a millitaire-style short closed jacket covering from his neck to his waist with golden buttons that have the same design as Lyor's, at the back it goes down to his knees, black pants but with a golden belt filled with carved small suns, on top of it all he's wearing a satchel made with the same transparent silk used to decorate the ballroom, and the same with his glove, made with the same silk complimented with lace. For Lowe's happiness, Nikias is wearing a new pair of millitaire style boots - exactly the same as the worn out ones he wears everyday, just new. And for jewelry, he didn't want to wear many, keeping it simple, wearing solely the necklace he got from his ''mother'', the watch he got from his ''father'', the bracelet he got from Lyor and the ring he uses to monitor Petal's whereabouts. Besides that, he is only wearing the same clip as Lyor, on the satchel, but instead of being shaped like the sun, is shaped like both the symbols of the god of Light and the goddess of Darkness.

Nikias' silver hair is finally cut, back to its original length, trimmed at the back, and the front reaching only the half of his forehead, with half of it slicked back only, he chose to not wear any headpiece, instead, his face got the biggest adjournment. His golden eyes are even more prominent in his face with the make-up made with pure gold, two parallel lines going from his eye to his temple, a ceremonial make-up by those who worshipped the god of the Sun centuries ago, it became a lost practice, but many still recognize it from the history books.

It was said that the parallel lines represent the god and its subjects always seeing one another yet never intertwining with each other. It was a way to show admiration, caution and devotion towards the god.

Most of the eyes inside the ballroom linger on Nikias, as he seems to shine even more as they walk towards the temporary altar, as the sunlight reflects on his hair and eyes.

Hand in hand, the two men walk calmly, as if they have all their time in the world, while Lyor stares at the altar, not looking at the others there present, Nikias' eyes that are also focused on the altar, are also paying attention towards his surroundings using his peripheral vision.

The moment they stop in front of the altar, Lyor holds Nikias' other hand, standing face to face with one another, Nikias finally looks at Lyor, as he was scared before, scared of freezing up.

And sure he was right, the man in front of him is… way out of his league.

Standing there Lyor doesn't solely truly look like the ruler he is, but he looks just as kind and sweet as he was during their letters exchange or during the small moments they were able to share during the year they were already together. Knowing he's going to marry this man, knowing he chose to marry him even before being aware that the man was completely his type, it all feels like destiny pulling them together.

A word he doesn't truly enjoy, as the fate of the novel should also be fate, yet here he is, standing alive, about to get officially engaged to a man whose gaze is enough to make anyone tremble, yet looks at him like Nikias is his whole world.

Why, why is Lyor so kind? When Nikias was nothing but rude in their first encounter, when all he offered was nothing in exchange of everything, sure inside of Nikias head he can rationalize this, that Lyor simply accepted their relationship and slowly grew fonder of Nikias as they became more open with each other.

The sound of his real name on the man's lips still lingers his mind.

The coldness of his embrace.

The taste of his lips.

What even is their relationship right now? It's not deep enough to be called love, nor superficial enough to be called a simple arrangement or even a political marriage.

Nikias wants Lyor to care for him, he wants him to like and enjoy his company just as much as the man enjoys his. Yet the caring gaze of the man fills him up with fear.

Fear of losing someone he cares so much about, fear of being stabbed in the back all over again.

The fear of being left alone, again.

Knowing Lyor never showed any signs of betrayal, quite the contrary, the man was nothing but extremely cooperative and caring towards Nikias for a whole year, even with irrational demands, even with extensive letters, Lyor is standing here, holding both of his hands, looking inside his eyes and smiling as if he's looking at someone he adores. However, knowing and accepting are two different things.

Because one Nikias is able to do it, and the other he isn't.

That's why he decided to do this long engagement party, inviting all of these important people. Because knowing that everything most probably will be fine even if he does nothing, doesn't mean he'll allow for things to go in a different direction from what he envisioned, it doesn't mean he'll sit around and wait for things to happen to him passively.

He was never the type.

The mellow sound of the harp fills the ballroom as another figure enters quietly. Jiwon walks towards the altar, but most eyes only notice the man when he stands behind it, staring at the couple in front of him. His appearance is completely different from usual, his black hair and black eyes are now completely bright pink, and he's wearing the tiara of the god of Love, his clothes are a simple white robe with no adjournments. Anyone watching can tell he's a Saint, and normally he wouldn't show himself like this, if it weren't a direct order from both King Lyor and Prince Nikias.

When Nikias came across this ceremony, or when he sent letter to Lyor asking him for both permission and help, no one will ever know. But the fact is, that right now, they're going through it.

A ceremony that binds their souls in a forever loop of finding each other, a bind that doesn't allow them to even feel something towards others, in this case, romantic love, a ceremony that is both dangerous and extremely difficult to do.

Not only because you need either the god of Love himself to do it or a Saint of his, but also because the two subjects of the ceremony need to have strong souls and must have an unwavering mind, meaning they must accept and want this with all of their being.

There mustn't be any kind of regret or doubt.

And on the flip side, this ties their soul not only in this life, but any life they come to have, in any world, any dimension, any reality of life under the Universe. Even if they aren't even reborn as humans, their souls will always attract each other with love.

Sure, they might not always have a loving relationship, as much depends on making that happen, but they will not be able to love others romantically, even if they do not become lovers.

By that, one must imagine anyone would be crazy to do such a ceremony, and indeed, only two other cases in the history of this Earth, said ceremony was performed, and now they're about to do the third.

At first Jiwon was adamant this wouldn't be feasible, the god of Love would never allow it, yet he did, then he thought there was no way both souls would be strong enough to withstand it, yet they are, and lastly he thought the Prince's feelings would waver.

Because he can see there are doubts in his eyes.

He just never thought the doubt wouldn't be towards his own feelings but the King's.

''Of course you can perform the ceremony, in fact I would say the fact they're soulmates only strengthens their resolve. Huh? Doubts? Them? Sure, the Prince has quite the unusual way of thinking, but he never once thought he didn't hold enough affection towards the King, I would say he's more scared of being hurt than doubtful of his future at the King's side. As for the King, perhaps because he's a powerful Saint, he can feel that they're already part of each other's fate. Don't worry so much Ji-won Hyeong, if anyone can have faith in their future together to the point of not wishing to have feelings for anyone else, would be those two, whose souls are tormented apart and brilliant together.''

The god of Love sure loved to chat, but his words held no lie, and therefore that's why Jiwon is standing here right now, about to do something he seems the only one worried about the consequences of.

Taking a deep breath, the man starts: ''We're gathered here today to align the souls of Nikias Gregor Chrysl and Lyor Natrix Noir, under the gaze of the gods''.

''Are they getting married already?'' Someone whispers.

''What is happening? Who is that guy?''

''This is absurd, how can they make a marriage so crude.''

''They're not getting married, this is just an engagement ceremony… I think''.

''What even is this ceremony? Is completely beyond protocol.''

''What a shame, I thought the Useless Prince had changed.''

Jiwon closes his eyes, trying to focus and ignore the whispers of confusion and curiosity. ''Under the blessings of the Sun, Moon, Darkness, Light and Love'', he can feel the mana leaving his body and enveloping Nikias and Lyor's souls, but he can't open his eyes, any distraction and this will go wrong, damn, why did they trust him for something like this? He never even asked to be a Saint, much less for the god of Love. And even now after he spent months accepting his fate, he still doesn't truly like his position, even if he came to enjoy his new abilities, like sometimes peeking over different dimensions and seeing him and Dacre falling in love over and over again. But doing a dangerous union of souls was not a perk he wanted. ''May they live and perish together, as body and soul, as material and immaterial, as a truth and as a lie, bless these souls and their love so that they may go through trials and always seek each other in the end. Even if the world shatters and is swallowed by the stars, may their wandering souls find the path towards each other.''

''What is he doing?'' Alkaios asks, taking a step towards his brother, but Evangelia holds him back. ''Let me go Angie, can't you see what he's doing?'' He points towards the altar, a pink light enveloping the couple that is still, looking at each other with empty minds, the only way to make this work is to focus on each other and nothing else. ''Angie, he's trapping him!''

''Alkaios he wanted this'', Evangelia says.

''You don't know what you're talking about, this isn't a joke Angie! That's forever!'' Alkaios shoves Evangelia back, but before he can interrupt the ceremony, his father is the one holding him back this time.

''Son, don't'', his words make Alkaios tremble with anger, his authoritarian voice and firm hold of the young man shows that he's fine with what is happening. But that isn't true, both Emperor and Empress are just as disturbed, not knowing what the young Prince had prepared, however if they interrupt the ceremony in the middle something worse could happen.

''We don't know that man'', Alkaios says in a whisper. ''What if he harms Nikias? What if he's forcing him to do this? Are we just going to stand still?''

''I'm sorry to interrupt, your highness, but Prince Nikias asked me to tell you something'', Fleuri appears, before just watching everything, he now needs to step in and do something extremely annoying, and he has no idea why he's doing this bothersome thing just because the Prince asked. But he does anyway, because he can't manage to do his job poorly, unfortunately, so he opens the paper the Prince had given him earlier that day. ''Dear brother, father, mother, do not interrupt the ceremony because this is my choice, I am not being forced, in fact, I was the one that chose and asked for this. It'll provide me peace of mind. There won't be anyone else but him, so rest assured. If you're still restless, then remember that if in eighteen years you chose to turn a blind eye to those abusing my body and mind, you have no right to tell me what to do or who to love now''.

Alkaios' eye twitches, and his irises become purple with anger, he wants to go against his brother's words, of course, why should he allow his little brother to tie his soul with a man he barely knows?

But that isn't up to him, and Nikias made sure to put several insurances in place for this. If Alkaios refuses to step down with the letter, all of the Spectres are allowed to stop him by force, because at this moment, in this place, he isn't the one in power.

Jiwon continues, finally opening his eyes that are glowing like jewels, ''Under the guidance of Xinyi, the sovereign of Love, the lover of all lovers, the one who sees and guides soulmates, may these souls become fully intertwined, changing their evercoming fate towards each other''.

A blast of light, and complete silence.

The first ceremony ended as simply as that.

I felt nothing, Nikias thinks, blinking slowly, he managed to empty his mind completely and focus solely in Lyor's eyes, and the next thing he knew, the ceremony was over, he couldn't even hear the words Jiwon said, much less pay attention to others around them. He looks at the man who's hair is back to the usual tone of black, completely depleted of mana.

''Did it work?'' He asks in a whisper, his heart pounding so loud he's sure everyone there can hear it. What if his resolve wasn't enough? What if Lyor's resolve wasn't enough? Will he have to go back? Think of another solution? Or perhaps let everything go and try to escape? Even if his appearance is known all across any nation, he can live his whole life in hiding if it comes to it, because as long as he survives…

But then he'll be alone again…

Completely and utterly alone.

Is that his fate?

No, he's worked his ass off for this future, he can't give up now, not when he betted all of his hopes on Lyor.

Was he wrong?

Did he fail to judge the King properly? Was this gamble unsuccessful?

His head is spinning and he feels the ground slowly crumbling under his feet for every second he awaits Jiwon's answer.

But the man nods.

The moment he does so, relief washes over Nikias. A relief so overwhelming that he can't help but feel elated. A smile blossoming in his face.

A smile so pure, radiant and sincere, the happiest smile he ever did since becoming Nikias, no, since he was born. His face lits up, his golden eyes shining like two suns, and the sun rays bathing the ballroom shine brighter on him, giving him an ethereal appearance, like a being beyond human comprehension, his smile, recorded and broadcasted all over both the Exos Empire and the Morke Kingdom, will forever be burnt in everyone's mind.

Lyor's hand brushes Nikias' hair as the man also smiles, placing a kiss on his fiance's forehead. The tall man bends over, whispering in Nikias' ear: ''You're more radiant than the sun itself, Vahe, thank you for being in my life and choosing me as your present and future''.

Warmth spreads all over Nikias' face, as he blushes with the King's words and smiles at him softly, his heart feels so light in this moment that he can't even process that he's in front of so many people and being broadcasted to many more, all he can see, feel and hear is Lyor's presence near him.

His breath, his soft scent and his cold touch, everything tingles inside his senses and his heart.

How beautiful is the feeling of being free of worry. Of being abandoned, of losing someone again.

Even if they die, he now has even the reassurance that they'll meet again, that no matter what happens, Lyor and him will forever be bound as long as the Universe remains to exist in its immensity.

''Thank you for accepting me'', Nikias whispers back, placing a kiss on Lyor's cheek before the man straightens his posture.

The ballroom is in complete silence, as some are confused about what just happened, while others with knowledge are silent in complete shock.

Something as rare as the alliance of souls, performed so perfectly in front of them.

Jiwon walks away, his hands trembling and his head aching, silently he takes a seat near where Dacre is standing guard, leaning his head onto the man's side, closing his eyes to calm down and recover from spending a great amount of his mana in a ceremony he would never imagine having to perform in his life.

Keres now takes his place, next to her is Lowe, carrying a gold tray with two chalices and a dark bottle.

''Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen here present to grace the promise of union between his majesty and his highness.'' Keres speaks, projecting her voice all over the ballroom with the help of a small magical device made by Irene placed in her tunic. ''The ceremony you just witnessed is called Soul Alliance, a millenia old ceremony to join two souls that love each other so much that their love transcends body and time. A proof of love, loyalty and dedication.'' Her words make some bustling noise as the whispers of nobility take over the ballroom, but Keres doesn't stop her speech: ''After promising their souls to each other, we now will have another ceremony. A century-old tradition of the Morke Kingdom, under the blessings of Light and Darkness, the couple must declare their goals for their union and drink a glass of water from the Promised River, where the god of Light, Uri, professed his love to his beloved, the goddess of Darkness, Amaya, the moment they came to be under the Universe's gaze''.

She opens the bottle and fills both chalices halfway.

That's when Priest Saurav and Priest Cessair approach the altar. ''May the Light bless your promises and may you find solace in each other's love'', Priest Saurav chants, pouring pure white mana onto the two chalices that shine white for a few moments.

Next, Priest Cessair blesses their chalices as well: ''May the Darkness bring you peace and soothe your heart, blessing your future together as one''.

''Now, Prince Nikias, take this chalice, drink of this Promised Water, and profess out loud your promises'' Keres says, giving one of the chalices to Nikias.

''Under the gaze of the god of Light and the goddess of Darkness, I promise to remain loyal, to care and love you, Lyor Natrix Noir, until my soul fades back into the Universe's immensity'', Nikias says raising the chalice towards his head before drinking the liquid inside, it doesn't taste like anything, but it burns its way inside his body.

''King Lyor, take this chalice, drink this Promised Water, and profess out loud your promises'', Now Keres gives Lyor his chalice.

The man places the chalice near his forehead as he speaks: ''Under the gaze of the god of Light and the goddess of Darkness, I promise to protect your existence, to fix my gaze only at you and give out my existence for your brilliance, Nikias Gregor Chrysl, until my soul fades back into the Universe's immensity''.

After Lyor also drinks the water, they both turn to the altar, kneeling and lowering their heads as the two Priests touch their foreheads, drawing with their hands as they pour out their mana, the symbol of both of their gods.

''May the god/goddess of Light/Darkness bless your promises'', they speak in unison.

They wait a few seconds before getting up, thanking the Priests for their prayer as they go back to the crowd and Lowe cleans up. Keres leaves the altar, and Lowe returns with a sheet of silk, Nikias and Lyor extend their hands as the butler places the silk on their hands.

Head Priest Cato takes the altar slowly, although his advanced age is clear, he still imposes respect and exudes the power of the Sun, his eyes focused on Nikias as he seems more and more suspicious of his identity.

Not that it matters anymore, Nikias is bound to move to the Morke Kingdom, and there isn't any more risk of him being dragged to the Temple, not after the ceremony they just performed.

The Priest raises his hands towards the sky, his robe beautifully shining under the sun rays.

He starts speaking in the ancient tongue of the Empire: ''Akino, god of the Sun, the Stars, the warmth that saves and protects us, bathing us in your grace every morning to afternoon, I beg of you to gaze upon your humble subjects, bless us with your pity and bring happiness to the future of this young couple'', then, he continues in the Universal Language: ''Thank you, god, for your presence, for your warmth, for your love, for your kind gaze upon this pair of young men that come under you today to ask for the blessing of their future.'' Small glimmers of light, similar to stars surround Nikias and Lyor, warmth filling their body. ''Thank you, god'', he repeats, faintly in the background, some nobles also repeat with him, even Lowe, repeats under his breath. ''Thank you, god'', again he chants. ''Thank you, god''.

The glimmer becomes stronger before becoming faint and disappearing, the Priest lowers his hands, and places his hands on the two men's foreheads, before chanting again.

And the thing Nikias was avoiding up 'till now, that he planned every possible outcome of, happens.

His whole body is covered in a comfortable yet scorching warmth, a glow similar to the sun itself, making everyone present to close their eyes temporarily due to its brightness, surrounds him, and the symbol of the Sun god rests in his forehead before fading.

Head Priest Cato blinks slowly, driven speechless, he suspected it, but never expected to be true, that the Second Prince of the Empire, the useless one, would be the one blessed by the Sun god, the same god that only ever had another Saint a millenia ago, known for being prickly and hating to have Saints unless they're remarkable, after all, what would one expect when his previous Saint was none other than the founder of the Empire and a man whose name is known across the globe for his accomplishments.

The Golden Ruler, the Blessed One, the Child of the Sun.

All names used to describe those chosen by the god of the Sun as his Saint, names one would never expect to describe the Useless Prince as.

The reactions to such a fact vary across the ballroom. Those who were already aware of both Nikias' sainthood and his intent in revealing it at the engagement party are calm and collected, watching in silence as the party unfolds exactly to plan, feeling relief in seeing how pleased the Prince is. Those who know of the myths surrounding the Saints of the Sun god are trapped in both awe and confusion, of why such an impressive being chose him out of every other human to represent himself on Earth. And at last, those who just faintly understand what is happening, are amused by the interesting mix of ceremonies and cultures inside the Second Prince's engagement party.

Across the Exos Empire, selected places where the party is being broadcasted are driven silent just as much as the nobles present there, in awe of the Prince's divinity and his connection with the Sun god, those more devouts even falling into prayer.

Compared to the Morke Kingdom, where they were celebrating more loudly, children cheering on the streets, neighbours sharing meals and families chatting about their King's future. All of them, genuinely pleased by their King's happy expression, one which most have never seen before. Their King, their Saint, the one that brings them peace and protection, the one chosen by the gods, all they wish for is for their Kingdom to prosper even further with his promising future next to Prince Nikias.

Some with less wholesome expectations than others, but none can deny that seeing their King smiling so genuinely brings a smile to their faces as well.

After the prayer of Head Priest Cato ends, they proceed with the last two ceremonies, the blessing of the Moon goddess' Priest, that is quick and uneventful, and the friends and family blessings.

Nikias thought long and hard about this Exos Empire tradition, he didn't pay much attention to Alkaios and Evangelia's one, he wasn't invited to bless them anyway, but the biggest reason why he was hesitant to adhere to said tradition, was because the blessings of the Imperial Family wouldn't mean much, considering he isn't their real son.

However after a long talk with Lowe, he gave in.

The Blessing of Loved Ones, is when they all make a small speech about the couple getting engaged, and their close relationship, usually they're invited to do the speech beforehand, and the same number from both sides of the couple must speak, so that there is balance.

First, Priest Saurav stands at the altar, as Nikias and Lyor kneel again, looking at the man as they hold each other's hand. ''Lyor, as one of those who raised you as a child, I never thought I would witness the day that you'd choose your… bride?'' The man says with a soft laugh. ''But here we are, I can't deny I still cannot understand your choices, however I do wish for your happiness, for days filled with Light, and that your stubbornness pays off, may god bless your future''.

''We thank your blessing'', Nikias and Lyor say together as Lyor nods towards the Priest, not entirely happy with his choice of words, but pleased for his blessing.

After all, even if he has his issues with the Temple, Priest Saurav and Priest Cessair were practically his parents, raising him with all of their might.

Priest Cessair takes the altar next. ''For a hatchling, you grew into a fine man, Lyor'', he says with a calm expression. ''There wasn't a second from the moment I laid eyes into your chubby baby face, that I didn't know you were destined to greatness'', his words are filled with pride. ''You're my biggest pride, my biggest achievement and my biggest happiness. The darkness that fills my heart when I look at you is soft and pleasant, I hope that your future brings you the same darkness that you brought me. And that this young man stays by your side until the end. May the goddess bless your future''.

They repeat the words of thanks, and next, Cypress is the one that takes the altar.

''Lyor. I was honored when you asked me to bless your promises. Because even when we have our differences, at the end of the day, you are my best friend, the one that taught me to live again, that saved me from the depths of pain and that stood by my side even when I was foolish. I hope only happiness fills your future, and I hope I am lucky enough to remain by your side and share said happiness with you and your future husband. May the Universe bless your future''.

Cypress bows before receiving the thanks from the couple and leaving the altar.

On Nikias side, he made a reckless choice, a choice that may make him look foolish and immature, or even insult the nobles there present, and even more, the family he must call his.

Because the first one to speak is Dacre.

The commoner taking the altar startles every single noble present, some simply surprised, some curious, while others are fully insulted. How could a commoner bless a noble?

A Prince even.

But today isn't solely for the sake of politics, and the way both Nikias and Lyor treat their subjects, isn't up for the nobles of the Exos Empire to judge, or even the nobles of other nations. Being scared of retaliation would only make them look pathetic.

Nikias is cautious, sure, but he isn't fully scared of repercussions of certain actions he takes.

Because although there is a limit, Lyor's strong presence and stance do protect him from part of the scrutiny.

''Nikki'', Dacre speaks, his voice is muffled, his dull emerald eyes are watery, his hands shaking. Not because of the disgusted gaze of the nobles, but because this means a lot to him, just as it means a lot to Nikias. ''I wrote a whole speech, but to be honest I forgot it in my room'', his words make Nikias scoff, amused. ''We met in a very unusual situation, and when I look back on my past, I feel like I have never felt as alive as when we're chatting over a few bottles of wine. Although our social stances are leagues apart, I believe our friendship is deeper than merely social constructs, we resonate with each other through our souls, if there are romantic soulmates, as you and King Lyor, I would risk to say we're platonic soulmates. When I think about life without our friendship, my whole body freezes up, and I am unable to even imagine it.'', Dacre takes a deep breath, tears rolling down his cheeks, but his voice doesn't tremble. ''Nikki, your highness, my Lord, the hand you gave me is worth more than that golden coin. I am unsure of noble etiquette when it comes to friendships, and if I am to be completely honest, you're my first and only friend, so I am a bit inexperienced. However, Nikki, there isn't anything I wish for more sincerely, than to grow old alongside you, to play with your children, to laugh at your silly worries, to hear your insecurities, to be there for you when you're hurting, and even when you're smiling. At your highs and lows, I want to be there for you, next to you, as your friend for life''. Dacre takes another deep breath, trying to finish his speech properly: ''You deserve happiness, you deserve peace, you deserve love, and seeing your eyes shining with adoration when you look at Lyor, soothes my spirit, as I believe you're both perfect for each other. Nikki, I love you, and may the goddess bless your future''.

At the end of his speech, a few nobles pull their handkerchiefs, tapping their eyes to prevent their make-up to slip with the silent tears they spill, even the Empress herself is moved by the commoner's speech. However no one is as moved as Nikias, who although doesn't shed a tear, his expression says a thousand words, Dacre's words solidify his place inside Nikias' heart, although Dacre's position as his best friend was mostly self-appointed, the Prince must finally admit.

That he truly sees the pink-haired man as his best and only friend as well. The couple says their thanks, and Dacre goes back to his position, taking Jiwon's hands on his as he tries to stop his tears so that he can continue his work properly.

Next is Alkaios, the only member of the Imperial Family Nikias chose, as he was the lesser of evils, and he couldn't fully push them to the background, even if he did make him go after Dacre.

''Nikias. My dearest beloved younger brother, all I wish for is for your happiness and health, you're the light of my life. From when you were as tiny as a bean to now as a fully grown adult, I have always adored you.'' His words catch everyone by surprise, of course it does, it's the first time he has ever said those words so clearly. Nikias' heart clenches and he tightens his grip onto Lyor's hand, which in response brushes his thumb softly onto Nikias' hand, trying to calm him down. This is wrong, these words aren't meant for me, he thinks, his heart filling with despair, compared to Dacre's speech, that was completely directed at him, this speech isn't. These words should've been spoken towards the real Nikias, but he died without ever knowing his brother actually loved him. Due to immense guilt he can't help but tune out, not hearing the rest of Alkaios speech, he can't bear to, his thanks in response coming out automatically with Lyor's voice being followed by his, he can't even look at Alkaios as the man walks away from the altar.

The last one to speak is Lowe. Nikias thought extensively to who he should ask to speak last, truth is, he isn't that close to anyone else besides Dacre, and allowing Alkaios to speak already displeased him, so choosing another member of the family was out of the question. Of his subordinates, Fleuri is certainly the closest to him, but the man is clear with his boundaries between work and personal life, on the other hand, it was natural to choose Lowe instead. The only problem, in Nikias eyes, was that Lowe was someone attached to the previous Nikias, not him.

However he is, indeed, the natural choice after Dacre and Fleuri.

''Your highness'', Lowe starts, cleaning his throat before speaking again: ''Nikias'', the Prince's name feels bitter in the man's mouth as his heart pounds, he feels slightly faint due to the lack of sleep, but he can also feel the pressure of being chosen as one of the important people of the Prince. For someone that claims to not have emotions, he is feeling quite emotional at the realization that he is more attached to the Prince than he would like to admit. ''Although our relationship is one of Lord and subordinate more often than not… I am extremely grateful for your kindness. From the moment we met, until today, there wasn't a moment where I felt that you weren't genuine with us. You'll be an exceptional King Consort, and I hope to watch as you climb towards your brilliant fate. I respect you as my employer, and as a friend. Thank you for the kindness you've shown us, and may god bless your future''.

With that, the ceremonies end, two hours having passed as quickly as that. Now they still have the guests' greeting and the party itself to come.

But before anything starts, Nikias and Lyor get up again, looking at each other, the King takes Nikias' onto his embrace for a moment, thankful for finally being able to dream about their future, not that he wasn't before, but now he is fully sure that they will be together for every future to come.

When they part, Nikias stands on his toes, placing a soft kiss onto Lyor's lips, a kiss that makes both of their mouths tingle, the feeling that'll linger in their mouths throughout the night.

A kiss that although short, sealed their hopes for a brighter future as each other's only one.

Check my BlueSky, I have my posting schedule fixed there, and although I don't always manage to follow it, any delays ARE informed there: https://bsky.app/profile/shootystr.bsky.social

Don't forget I also have a playlist for the story that I use to write and also as inspiration for a few scenes: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzQy_skC__7d7RJhTb7P_1jphprcYV7v3&si=KmxgNYCkqc2Nk2OC

Since I've deleted the notice I would like to say something again, please read if you haven't read the notice:

I am planning in writing less side stories than before, as I won't write side stories on Lowe x Rainier anymore, they'll still have their small scenes inside the story, but that is due to me actually writing their story separately. You can check their story in my profile under the name 'Burning Red', the story is written in first person pov and already has 2 chapters posted, so please understand if the writing is lacking as its the first time I write in first person since I was idk 15? So basically ten years, Lmao. I'll still make other side stories as usual, but not as much as before since the story is now in a more Nikias focused moment than before when I was more establishing the scenario.

If you have any questions about any of my stories don't hesitate to ask, and if you're curious about anything as well.

See y'all in the next chapter and sorry again for the lack of updates, thank you so much for all of your love and support <3
