Karna was the one who volunteered to test Freed and Bickslow in this S class trials. And without any kind of surprise, he manged to defeat them easily within a few minutes.
Freed didn't have enough time to create runes, so he had to use demon script to change himself into a demon. Karna realised that the magic used by Freed is extremely similar to Levi's. even though Levi uses script magic to create things with magic, she cannot make anything with her words. The object only forms as long as she knows the property of what she is writing.
The same thing with Freed's demon transformation. He did not transform to a similar form to that of Zeref's demons or the original sin demons that existed in this world thousands of years ago. He turned into a being with high level dark affinity and mastery of dark arts.
Bickslow at the time tried to use his spirits to invade Karna's bow and arrow but failed as Karna's death element manged to easily ward them off and damage them slightly, making Bickslow lose most of his powers. Freed at the time tried to use the distraction to create runes, but the moment he was about to write the last rune, Karna used dispel creating psychological damage for Freed who realised Karna waited until the last moment to destroy his spell.
Within minutes, the entire fight was over, and Karna looked down at both of them with a serious expression.
"So, you idiots were planning on giving up from the beginning weren't you" He said which made both of them flinch and look away.
"I understand that you were planning on forfeiting if you came across another guild member as a form of atonement for your actions right" Karna asked to which both of them turned their heads away. Until finally Freed spoke up.
"It is just as you said Karna. Even though you managed to turn the entire thing into a form of punishment. It still does not change the fact that we were planning on destroying the guild from the inside.
This was the only way we knew on how to make amends at least by a little bit." Freed said to which Bickslow nodded.
Karna sighed.
"One of the things required for an S class wizards is to be decisive. If you wanted to do something to seek forgiveness, you should have tried your best at the S class trials to fill up the spot left behind by Laxus" he then looked at Freed.
"I'm talking about you Freed. I know you worship my brother more than anything, but at the same time that worship is worthless if you keep on holding yourself back when the chance comes for you to get stronger in the future.
You were one of the candidates who had the highest chance of getting the S class title. But since you don't even have the will to give your all in this exam where your comrades are giving their all, I hereby decree that you are eliminated from the S class trials of this year" Karna declared to which both of them nodded silently agreeing.
But if anyone looked closely, they would see that there was a fire lit in their eyes.
"Alright since you are not candidates of the exam, right now you are guildmembers. So, I am giving you a mission you need to do now" Karna's tone became serious surprising them. But they stood up and patted the dust of their body. Showing that they faked being defeated earlier and is still quite capable of fighting.
"What's the mission?" Freed asked.
"Your mission is to create rune traps across the entire island, make it simple and effective. You targets should be at harassing more than defeating your enemies" Karna said and suddenly both of them realised the seriousness of the mission.
"Hey, are you telling me some idiots are planning on attacking the island. With all the S class wizards currently in the island" Bickslow asked with his eyes wide in surprise. Even his minion spirits were surprised that someone had the audacity to do such a suicidal mission.
"Is it that Doranbolt. I now realised he had put me under a memory manipulation spell. We must immediately go after as he might take Wendy hostage if he knows we are on to him" Freed immediately said seriously.
"Ah, you don't need to worry about that idiot. He's just a spy from the council. Trying to get some dirt on the Fairy Tail guild to shut us down. and he might have a thing for cute kids." Karna paused "Maybe we should beat the crap out of him right now"
He immediately disappeared from that place.
Freed and Bickslow were wide eyed as they processed everything they heard.
''THE COUNCILL!!!. WHY THE HELL ARE YOU CALM ABOUT THAT. AND WHY THE HELL DID YOU LET A GUY LIKE THAT GO WITH WENDY'' They screamed in their mind but decided not to say out loud.
Freed immediately started moving to create runic protections throughout the island. Since Karna insinuated that the enemy might be stronger than the council, he decided it was better to start now and cover the island with as many runes as possible. Plus, he was able to feel his magic reserves increasing the more he used it in the Island. He is not going to waste this opportunity to get stronger.
At the time, Doranbolt had been defeated by Gray and Loki, or more like he decided it was time to lose so that he can infiltrate the island to find dirt on Fairy tail guild.
Right now, Wendy was apologizing to him for not being strong enough to help him in the battle as Gray and Loki had defeated her even without using any attacks. They just used some sour plums to defeat her emotionally.
Just as Doranbolt was about to knock Wendy out, he suddenly lost his vision.
BAM!!!!.
'Ah' he painfully realised. He was smashed to the ground by someone who discovered him.
