Chapter 1 - The Summoning

The forest was quiet as the six teens packed up their campsite, the last rays of sunlight slipping through the trees. Their outdoor excursion—a brief camping trip—had been meant for relaxation, survival practice, and bonding before returning to school.

Alric Veyron, 6' tall and lean, lifted the last tent pole. "Alright, everyone, last load and then we head back," he said, forcing a calm smile. He didn't show it, but a knot of unease had settled in his chest from all the fatigue and constant vigilance.

Kaitlin Hawke, 5'5 and slim, balanced a backpack while perched on a log. "I call dibs on carrying the snacks!" she teased, though her mind flitted to the random critters and animals one could see in the forest.

Maria Marwa, 5'7 and well-built, held the first-aid kit close. "I am glad I didn't have to use this," she whispered, though her fingers twitched and her wide eyes darted at every sound.

Freda Njeri, 5'7 and athletic, carried the heavier supplies, grinning at her friends. Axel Kallias, 6'5, quietly carried most of the heavier equipment, hands moving almost absentmindedly as if he was analysing invisible equations in his head. Ethan Veyron, 5'10 and lean-muscular, dragged the last cooler, muttering under his breath.

Then everything changed.

A sudden, blinding light tore through the forest. The trees stretched, the ground bent beneath them, and a pulse shook the air. Alric's stomach dropped as he reached out instinctively to grab his friends—and they fell through white nothingness.

When they landed, the forest was… wrong. The sunlight was golden, almost metallic. The trees twisted unnaturally. Their car was gone. Phones, watches, electronics—dead. A wave of panic surged.

Maria screamed, clutching her backpack. "Where… where are we?!"

Kaitlin's usual grin faltered. "No car… no phones… nothing?!"

Ethan scowled, gripping his empty hands. "This… this isn't a joke, right?!"

Alric's chest tightened. Fear pulsed through him just like the others, but he forced his voice firm. "Everyone… breathe. Stay together. Think. We can't panic."

Even as he said it, his mind raced: This doesn't feel normal. Where are we, and how did we get here?

The air shimmered, and suddenly a rectangular, glowing window appeared before Alric. It hovered, flickering faintly.

The group stared, wide-eyed. The reality of a fantasy world slammed into them. Kaitlin's chest heaved as she glanced at Alric and crew, a warmth she didn't understand spreading in her stomach when she glanced at the former. "Yeah… we've really… been pulled into something insane," she muttered.

Alric exhaled shakily. "It's real… It's real. We're together. That's what matters."

They cautiously examined the forest, feeling the pulse beneath the ground, the unnatural shimmer in the air. Shadows twisting unnaturally.

"Let's… see what we can do," Alric said, flexing his fingers. He tentatively summoned a shadow tendril—it flickered, jerky, and almost snapped back like it had a mind of its own.

Kaitlin waved her hands experimentally, producing a flickering illusion of a bird that shimmered and vanished mid-air. Maria conjured a faint protective glow around her hands, Freda produced a small orb of holy light, and Ethan sent a tiny flicker of fire at a tree stump. Axel focused, and a miniature, winged creature appeared, hovering briefly before dissolving.

They laughed nervously, panting, eyes wide. "It… works," Maria whispered, still trembling.

"Barely," Freda corrected, smiling faintly. "But it works. And that is confirmation this isn't Earth."

Axel glanced at the status, thoughts swirling in his head. "This 'mana' attribute might be what powers our powers as it reduces the more you use your abilities."

Everyone's gaze flicked to their status and revealed the exact outcome. Freda proposed. "We should keep an eye on it so it doesn't deplete. We don't know if it will recharge or not."

The forest was quiet once more. But the faint shimmer in the trees, the pulse beneath their feet, and the lingering hum in the air reminded them: this world wasn't theirs, and they only had each other to rely on.

The teens had survived their summoning—but their true adventure had only just begun.
