Chapter 43: Threads of Darkness and Truth
Zuko paused at the door to the corridor, his hand on the frame. "Stay here," he said to Katara, his voice leaving no room for argument.
"Zuko…"
"This isn't about trust,"he cut her off, his gold eyes meeting hers. "It's about containment. Some knowledge is a poison that spreads on contact. Wait here."
He didn't wait to see the hurt and frustration flash across her face. He pushed the door open and stepped into Yue's room, closing it firmly behind him.
The princess was standing in the center of the small space, no longer pacing, but rigid with coiled anxiety. The moment the door shut, she spoke, her voice low and urgent, stripped of all its earlier calm.
"What do you know about the black fire your cousin used?"
Zuko leaned back against the door, crossing his arms. "I know it's a symptom. A possible connection to Vaatu, the Spirit of Chaos and Darkness. That's the extent of my confirmation. The rest is… inference from corrupted reports. Why? What do you know about Vaatu? That name has been dust for ten thousand years."
Yue's luminous eyes held his. "We have scrolls in the Northern Spirit Library. Fragments from the era of Avatar Szeto, and thousands of years earlier. Texts that speak of the 'Darkness Between Stars,' the 'Unmaker.' Most dismissed them as heresy or metaphor." She took a step closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Avatar Kuruk… in the years I communed with the Spirit World after my… blessing… he visited me. He spoke of his battles. Of the things that lurk in the forgotten corners. He filled in the gaps the scrolls left empty. Vaatu is real, Prince Zuko. And if a mortal is wielding his essence as fire…"
She left the horrific conclusion hanging.
In Zuko's mind, a connection fired. Unalaq. In the timeline-that-was, the power-hungry Northern chief had learned of Vaatu from ancient scrolls, using that knowledge to break the spirit free during Harmonic Convergence. He'd forgotten that detail, lost in the chaos of his own displaced existence. Of course the Northern Tribe would have fragments. They were the spiritual archivists of the world. And with the timeline accelerated, that obscure knowledge wasn't a future problem, it was a key to a present catastrophe.
He was silent for a long moment, staring at the metal deck as his mind raced, recalibrating. The guru, the Lion Turtle, the second element, all of it was a race against a clock he hadn't realized was ticking this fast. Lu Ten wasn't just a political rival with strange power. He was a breach. A walking, talking crack in the prison of an elemental force of oblivion.
"Prince Zuko?" Yue's voice pulled him back. She was staring at him, a strange look on her face… part concern, part deepening suspicion. "You… you know more than you're saying. You just realized something."
Zuko looked up, his expression shuttering closed. "I got lost in thought. Ancient history and current events have a messy way of overlapping. Don't worry. I know things. That's… part of the reason I'm doing all of this."
He pushed off the door, intending to leave, to think, to plan.
"Remember our deal," Yue said, her voice firm, stopping him.
He glanced back. "Which part?"
"All of it. My safety. The tribes. And… you must tell Katara the truth. The entire truth. Eventually, Azula as well."
Zuko's jaw tightened at the second name. "Azula is at the moment… unstable. A calculated risk. Katara… I will honor that part of the deal. When the time is right."
"And when will that be?" Yue pressed. "After you've bound her to you with more than just feelings? After she's in so deep she can't leave even if the truth terrifies her? That is your 'psychological torture,' Prince. It's already happening."
He didn't deny It. He couldn't. "For now," he said, turning the handle, "I think it best I focus on more immediate matters. Like exploring the back of a living island that's agreed to host us."
He opened the door. Katara was still there, leaning against the opposite bulkhead, arms crossed, her expression a storm cloud. She looked from his closed face to Yue's solemn one.
"You have permission to visit the island," Zuko said to Yue, ignoring Katara's glare for a moment. "To board the Lion Turtle. We'll be setting up a base camp for the next few days."
A flicker of something… relief? Longing? ... crossed Yue's face. "May I join you?"
Zuko gave a curt nod. "We disembark within the hour. I suggest you get ready." He looked at the simple robes she wore. "Find something practical. It's a forest, not a palace."
He stepped out into the corridor, Katara falling into step beside him, a silent, seething presence.
"Containment?" she hissed, once they were out of earshot.
"Later, Katara," he said, his voice tired. "Right now, I need to see if there's a freshwater spring, edible plants, and a flat spot for a tent on the back of a primordial deity. The cosmic horror department will have to wait its turn."
He strode towards the deck where Rin and Lee were already organizing the disembarkation, leaving Katara staring after him, the names Vaatu and Raava and the ghost of a deal she wasn't part of swirling in the air like mist, thick and impossible to grasp.
