Chapter 255 - V3.C41. A Different Kind of Torture

Chapter 41: A Different Kind of Torture

The heavy door clicked shut behind Zuko, leaving Katara standing in the corridor, the echo of his footsteps fading toward the upper decks. She should follow him. She should demand answers, scream at him, something. But her feet felt rooted to the metal deck.

She turned and looked back at the closed door. Through the small, reinforced porthole, she could see Yue, still sitting on the bunk, her posture no longer regally calm, but coiled with a new, urgent tension.

Without fully deciding, Katara's hand turned the handle and she slipped back inside.

Yue's head snapped up. For a fleeting moment, Katara saw raw, unguarded fear in the princess's luminous eyes before it was schooled back into composure. "Katara. Did you forget something?"

"No," Katara said, closing the door softly behind her. She leaned against it, crossing her arms. "I just… I haven't seen you since the Oasis. Not really. How… how have you been? These past weeks, locked in here?"

Yue's shoulders relaxed a fraction. She gestured around the small, neat room. "I have been treated quite…lovely, surprisingly. The guards change the linens. They bring fresh water twice a day. The food is simple but good. The soldiers… even they are polite. It is… disorienting."

Katara nodded slowly, a frown creasing her brow. "I wondered about that. Even when he had Aang and Sokka and me captured on his ship, back at the beginning… he wasn't cruel. No beatings. No starvation. It was almost… normal. Like we were inconvenient guests, not prisoners."

"Oh, he was torturing you," Yue said, her voice quiet and certain. "Just not the kind you recognize."

Katara stiffened. "What do you mean?"

"Prince Zuko or whatever he is after faking his death doesn't use racks or hot irons. His torture is psychological. He manipulates. He isolates. He presents himself as your only option, your only source of truth or safety. He makes you doubt your allies, your cause, even your own memories." Yue's pale eyes met Katara's. "He gets inside your mind and rearranges the furniture, and you don't even notice until you're sitting in a chair he built, looking at a picture he hung. From all that I have seen and heard about him this past two months. That is his kind of torture. And it is far more effective."

The words landed with the weight of truth. Katara thought of her own journey from hatred to… whatever this was. The slow erosion of her certainty, the way his secrets had become a shared burden, his goals somehow her own. She looked away, her throat tight.

"Why won't you tell me?" Katara asked, the question bursting out. "The secret. What you know about him. If it's so dangerous, why protect it? Why let him keep it?"

Yue sighed, a soft, weary sound. "Because that secret is the precise reason Avatar Aang trusts him to a degree. It is the anomaly that explains all other anomalies. And…" she paused, a faint, complicated smile touching her lips. "…it is also the reason I do not entirely mind the prospect of being part of his… desires. It makes him more than a mere Fire Nation prince seeking power. It makes him a piece of a much larger, stranger puzzle."

Katara shook her head, frustration warring with a desperate need to understand. "And your fiancé? Hahn? What would he think? What will our people think when… when all of this gets out? That the princess of the Northern Tribe is part of a Fire Prince's harem?"

"Hahn is a brave warrior who wanted a trophy," Yue said, her voice devoid of bitterness, only a sad finality. "He would not understand. And our people… it is for the best that I do not antagonize Zuko. If handled correctly, this… arrangement… could be the foundation of an alliance. A real one. Not just a paper peace, but a bond that could finally end this bloody war for good."

"You didn't know," Katara said softly. "The war… it's already over."

Yue blinked. "What?"

"Fire Lord Ozai was defeated. In an Agni Kai by his own nephew, Lu Ten. Lu Ten took the throne and declared the war over. He's called the fleets home."

A wave of relief, so profound it was almost dizzying, washed over Yue's face. "Peace? Truly? Then… then maybe there is hope, after all…"

But Katara wasn't finished. "The reports… they say Lu Ten used a fire no one had ever seen. Not red, not blue. Black fire. It didn't just burn Ozai, it absorbed his flames and… temporarily took his bending."

The relief on Yue's face froze, then shattered.

All color drained from her cheeks. Her hands, which had been folded calmly in her lap, clenched into white-knuckled fists. "What did you say?" she whispered, her voice suddenly thin as ice.

"Black fire," Katara repeated, confused by the violent reaction. "They said his flames turned black and consumed the Fire Lord's bending. Why? What does that…"

"Black fire," Yue breathed, the words sounding like a curse. Her eyes were wide, staring past Katara at a horror only she could see. "Are you certain? This is not a metaphor? Not an exaggeration?"

"Zuko read the official scroll to everyone three weeks ago. He has spies; he confirmed it. It's real."

"Three weeks…" Yue echoed, the number seeming to detonate in her mind. Her breathing hitched, turning ragged and hurried. "You mean to say I have been in this room for three weeks?" Her voice rose, edged with panic.

Katara nodded, taken aback. "Yes… since the siege."

Yue shot to her feet. She began to pace the short length of the room, her steps quick, frantic. Her composure was gone, replaced by a vibrating, terrified energy. "That son of a bitch," she cursed, the crude word shocking in her refined mouth. "That arrogant, blind, fool! He didn't say anything! He didn't tell me!"

She whirled on Katara, her eyes blazing with a desperate intensity. "Does Zuko know about this black fire?"

"Of course he does," Katara said. "He was the one who told us. He has reports, intelligence…"

"Three weeks!" Yue repeated, as if the timeframe itself was the key to the catastrophe. "He's known for three weeks and he's been playing with Lion Turtles and Moon Spirit essence while that is happening?" She pressed her palms to her temples. "Of course he doesn't understand. He can't. He wouldn't."

"Understand what?" Katara pleaded, stepping forward. "Yue, what's happening? What is 'black fire'?"

Yue stopped pacing. She looked at Katara, and the horror in her eyes was so profound it sent a chill down Katara's spine. "According to Avatar Kuruk," Yue said, her voice dropping to a haunted whisper, "there is only one source of fire that is not light, but the absence of it. Fire that does not create, but unmakes. Fire that consumes not fuel, but spirit."

She met Katara's gaze, and the name fell from her lips like a stone into a deep well. "Vaatu."

Katara stared. "What's a… Vaatu?"

But Yue was no longer listening. The name had focused her panic into a single, piercing point of action. "Please, Katara," she said, her voice trembling but clear. "Get Zuko. I need to speak with him. Alone. Now."

The sheer, absolute seriousness in her tone brooked no argument. This was not a princess making a request. This was a guardian sounding an alarm.

Katara didn't ask again. She had learned that some secrets were too heavy to be pulled; they had to be given. And whatever Yue knew, it was a secret that had just turned the end of a war into the beginning of a nightmare.

"I'll get him," Katara said, and turned, yanking the door open and breaking into a run down the corridor, her boots ringing on the metal deck, the princess's terrified curse echoing in her mind.

Vaatu.

The name meant nothing to her.

But the look in Yue's eyes meant everything.
