Chapter 25 - Chapter 25

Aria tossed a piece of dried meat over to La, her expression still wary, a subtle mix of reluctance and curiosity flickering in her eyes. "Don't get too comfy, okay? You're not staying," she warned, half-jesting but dead serious. La managed to snag the piece mid-air, her fiery red eyes darting up to meet Aria's for a heartbeat, before she began to chew thoughtfully. The weight of unspoken tension hung between them like a thick fog, but despite herself, Aria felt an odd urge to pry. "So, what's an Omega like you doing out here all alone?"

La's gaze lifted, but instead of addressing the question, she simply continued to chew, contemplating something far beyond the universe around them. Aria snorted, exasperated. "Yeah, didn't think so." It was classic; every time she tried to dig deeper, La just clammed up tighter than a clam in a shell.

Lost in the absurdity of their situation, Aria flicked her eyes toward the forest, punctuating the awkward silence that sprawled out before them. Just then, the muffled sound of voices rustled in from the edge of the woods. Valiant and Zara emerged, their conversation hinting at weighty matters of the throne they seemed so deeply enmeshed with.

"I'll go back," Valiant declared after a moment, her voice cutting through the tension like a knife through silence. There was a resoluteness in her demeanor that spoke of determination, of potential sacrifice. "I have to try." Aria watched as Zara's face broke into a small, supportive smile—so bright it could soften the hardest hearts. "I got you," Zara replied, her voice infused with earnest friendship. It was a promise wrapped in layers of loyalty, shining in the gloom of uncertainty.

As the distant chatter from Valiant and Zara drifted away, an unseen force shifted the atmosphere back to Aria and La. An almost electric tension crackled through the air, stinging Aria's instincts. La's ears twitched, a predatory alertness snapping into focus as her gaze locked onto something in the distance, sharp as a hawk's. Aria followed her line of sight, and her heart dropped like a stone. "Shit," she hissed, disbelief creeping into her voice. "Riders. And they're not friendly."

A low growl rumbled in La's throat, a sound that threatened to unleash a tempest of danger. Aria, ever the warrior but never the fool, narrowed her eyes at La. "You know them?" she demanded, her voice low but laced with urgency. La's response was a slight, almost imperceptible nod, her eyes fixed intently on the approaching group, as if she were reading a story written in the wind.

The tension twisted around them like a coiling snake, and just in that moment, amid the impending confrontation, Aria felt something surge inside her—a powerful mix of panic and adrenaline. She realized with dizzying clarity that she was no longer just a player in this game but a crucial part of a larger narrative. She was fiercely protective and strangely drawn to this Omega at her side, even if their relationship began in the shadows of mutual distrust.

But that was the thing about her: she never backed down from a challenge, especially when it mattered. "Stick with me, La," Aria commanded, her voice steady even as her heart raced. "Whatever you did to earn their ire, we're going to face it together. And believe me, I don't know what it means to back off."

She caught a glimpse of La out of the corner of her eye, her stoic face reflecting a thousand untold stories, and Aria felt something unexpected: a strange sense of camaraderie. They were both here, caught in a web of complications, but it didn't matter right now. They needed to be ready for whatever rode their way, together. Whether they liked it or not.

And oh boy, did things just got really interesting.
