Gojaro found the teacher kneeling beside the cafeteria wall with a strip of tape in her hands. She had marked the plaster at the height of the oxygen bottle clips. The tape had been straight when she put it up. Now its lower edge bent where a hairline crack crossed the wall.
"The children are on the other side of the room," she told him before he asked. "All forty-three are here. I moved the three clipped bottles onto rolling stands, and I want those beds farther from this wall. Rosa says I can use the serving lane if I give her five minutes."
Gojaro put his palm against the plaster. It gave him one hard knock. The wall did not sway, but dust dropped from the crack onto his wrist. He had seen the outer return bracket beneath the broken landing. He would have to get outside to learn whether it was driving the crack.
"Start moving them into the serving lane now," he said. "I will take the bed with the bad caster while you speak to them."
