Chapter 27 - The Boardroom Storm

The penthouse phone buzzed. Jenny and Ryan had barely settled into the fragile calm of the night when the screen lit up: a video call from the board.

Jenny's chest tightened. Every instinct screamed to delay, to brace, to armor up. But Ryan's hand on her back was steadying. "We face it together," he murmured.

She nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "Together."

The call connected. The faces of board members filled the screen—stern, impatient, calculating. Their collective gaze was sharper than any headline.

"Ms. Jenny," one of the senior directors began, voice clipped. "The leaks have escalated. Investors are anxious. There are rumors questioning the integrity of your partnership with Ryan Mathew. How do you respond?"

Jenny's chest tightened for a moment, but she glanced at Ryan, who gave a subtle nod. She straightened, voice calm despite the storm inside. "We're investigating the source of the leaks. And let me be clear: these distortions are attempts to manipulate perception, not reality. Ryan and I operate independently, but our strategies are aligned for the company's success—not personal gain."

A murmur rippled through the virtual boardroom. One director raised an eyebrow. "And yet, this latest audio suggests manipulation within private discussions. Investors are concerned about conflicts of interest."

Ryan leaned forward, his presence beside her unspoken but undeniable. "Let me address that directly," he said. His voice carried authority, not arrogance. "I have complete trust in Ms. Jenny's leadership and judgment. This company's direction and my decisions will always prioritize growth and ethics, not personal agendas. And anyone attempting to distort that for their gain will be exposed."

Jenny's heart raced—but not from fear. From relief. That was the difference between surviving and fighting together.

One director pressed further. "And if the media frenzy continues? If investors demand separation between executive powers?"

Jenny met Ryan's eyes. She realized she could answer. We can handle it together.

"We adapt," she said firmly. "We communicate. We counter misinformation with transparency, not panic. And we continue to lead decisively. That's how we protect the company—and each other."

Ryan added, "And any attempt to weaponize personal relationships against corporate decisions will fail. Not because of luck, but because we are prepared. Together."

Silence followed. The board members were calculating, reassessing, trying to pierce the shield Ms. Jenny had so carefully maintained.

Then the CEO on the screen leaned back, exhaling. "Very well. I expect daily updates on the investigation and a full strategy to neutralize these leaks. And Ms. Jenny—thank you. Your composure tonight… it's noted."

The call ended. The screen went dark.

Jenny exhaled, the tension in her shoulders finally releasing. Ryan let her sink against him, the weight of the boardroom still lingering in the room.

"You did it," he said quietly. "Not just survived. You led."

She laughed softly, almost disbelieving. "We did it."

"Yes," he agreed, pulling her into a quick, fierce hug. "Together."

Outside, the city was still buzzing. Leaks, headlines, speculation—but inside, Ms. Jenny felt something she hadn't in years: not fear. Not just survival. Control. And trust.

For now, at least.
