Chapter 195
I followed Nurse Davis down the hallway. We tended to Mrs. Henderson first, but Maria was on my mind the entire time. Her sudden illness, her request to see me... it all felt too convenient. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.
Finally, we arrived at room 310. Nurse Davis opened the door, and I stepped inside, my senses on high alert.
I found Maria in a quiet corner of the patient ward, looking pale and exhausted. She was hooked up to an IV, her eyes closed. She looked so vulnerable. Her skin had a strange, almost translucent quality, and there were dark circles under her eyes. She seemed to be sleeping peacefully, but something about her stillness felt unnatural.
Nurse Davis approached the bed, her brow furrowed with concern. "She's been sleeping like this for hours," she whispered. "I tried to wake her up earlier, but she just mumbled something and drifted back to sleep."
