The thought came right after, soft but heavy.
Is it enough?
This wasn't about numbers. It was about whether meaning could be packed into boxes and bags. Whether effort, when wrapped carefully enough, could cross the space that had opened between us during that first phone call.
I stood there in the middle of the mall, surrounded by light and sound, holding things that were supposed to speak on my behalf. Suddenly, they felt awkward in my hands. Too loud. Too certain.
Maybe I needed one more thing.
Or maybe I needed ten.
Another necklace. A coat. Perfume. Something soft. Something impressive. Something impossible to misunderstand.
For a brief, dizzy moment, I saw how easily this could become a pattern. Store after store. Purchase after purchase. An endless attempt to compensate for words I hadn't said, for questions I hadn't asked. As if enough intention, stacked high enough, could eventually outweigh the silence between us.
