Chapter 6
After his encounter with Kuroko, Taiga Kagami seeks out Junpei Hyūga, eager to know when he can officially join the basketball club. Hyūga informs him that he is currently just a trial member and cannot participate in games yet. Determined to secure his spot, Kagami hurries to Riko Aida, requesting an official club membership form. Riko reveals that Kaito and Kuroko had already approached her with the same request, teasing Kagami about his impatience before handing him the form. However, she adds that she will only accept the applications on Monday at 8:40 am on the roof.
As Kagami leaves, he pauses in the hallway and notices an article from Seirin High's student newspaper pinned to a board. The article highlights the achievements of the basketball club, despite being composed entirely of first-year students. Kuroko appears beside Kagami and comments on their team's strength, surprising Kagami enough to yell and grab his head. Kagami wonders why Kuroko, once known as the phantom sixth man of Teikō Junior High, chose to attend Seirin instead of a renowned school like the other Generation of Miracles. He also questions why Kaito, with his exceptional abilities, remains relatively unknown in Japan and why he, too, decided to join Seirin. Before Kagami can voice these questions, Kuroko disappears.
Minutes before Seirin High's morning assembly, Riko gathers Kagami, Kaito, Kuroko, Kawahara, Fukuda, and Furihata on the roof for a conversation. She explains her commitment to pushing the team towards the national championships and issues a challenge: each member must state their year, class, name, and announce their ambitions from the roof. Failure to achieve their goals will result in returning, stripping naked, and confessing their feelings for the person they love. Although initially disbelieving, the group learns that the second-year students underwent the same ritual the previous year.
Kagami confidently takes the stage, jumping on the railing and proclaiming his ambition to defeat the Generation of Miracles and become the best player in Japan. Kawahara follows, sharing a lengthy personal story before Riko interrupts him. Fukuda reveals he joined after being asked for help by an upperclassman, while Furihata aims to become the best at basketball to win the affection of a girl he likes. Kuroko is up next and suggests using a megaphone since he isn't skilled at speaking loudly. Before he can say anything, the school's principal interrupts, scolding the group for causing a disturbance. Unfortunately, Kaito doesn't get the chance to declare his thoughts as he was meant to be the last after Kuroko.
Later that evening, Kagami visits Maji Burger again, ordering a large stack of burgers. Unintentionally sitting at Kaito and Kuroko's table, Kagami questions their choice to attend Seirin instead of prestigious schools like the other Miracles. He also wonders if Kaito has a specific reason for playing basketball. Kuroko explains that his team at Teikō Junior High became too fixated on victory, and he felt they had lost something essential. His goal is to defeat each of the Miracles in his own way and help Seirin become the best team in Japan. Kaito, on the other hand, mentions that he doesn't know much about Japanese high school basketball because he has been in Spain for the past years. He adds that his family lives near Seirin, which influenced his decision to attend. Kaito corrects Kuroko's statement, affirming that they won't merely try, but they will become the best.
The following day, a commotion erupts at Seirin High as students gather around a large message written on the ground: "WE WILL BE THE BEST IN JAPAN." Kaito grins upon seeing it, and Riko remarks that it might just be interesting enough to work. While most students flock to the windows to see the message, Kuroko remains seated at his desk, engrossed in a book. As he reaches up to rub his nose, a small trace of white chalk powder is visible on his uniform sleeve, revealing that he was the one responsible for creating the message to fulfill Riko's order from the roof.
