Chapter 103 - Snow Does Not Break

(Rosaline POV)

The palace sleeps.

I do not.

Snow presses softly against the tall windows of my study chamber within Arthur's wing. The storm has not relented for three days. Frost gathers along the lower edges of the glass like creeping lace.

The lamps burn low.

Wax pools at the base of three candles already replaced.

Guest lists.

Revised again.

Winter logistics reports.

Revised again.

Snow carriage routes from the southern duchies must account for frostbite delays. Supply caravans must rotate every eight hours to prevent freezing of draft horses. The northern barons require heated escort tents if they are to remain long enough for the full ceremony.

I dip my pen into ink.

My hand trembles slightly.

I blame the cold.

The fire is burning.

But I blame the cold anyway.

A soft knock at the door.

"Milady."

Priscilla.

"You should rest."

"I will," I reply automatically.

I do not look up.

Numbers blur for a second.

I blink.

They sharpen again.
