Camilla could only sit slumped on the floor as she listened to Richard explain what he was doing in her bedchamber late at night. He looked William right in the eye as the lies just rolled of his tongue - as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
It left her astonished.
She tried to speak up and protest, only to have a furious Richard shout her down.
It's ironic that I'm the one left shaking with fear when I'm actually telling the truth, she thought.
It was no use trying to explain herself. William didn't show a flicker of concern for her or ask for her side of the story. He just listened and nodded to the poison Richard poured into his ear, expression flat and cold.
I guess William truly hates me now. Why would he ever believe me over his best friend?
She pressed her aching forehead to her knees and closed her eyes for a moment.
