I felt heavy as a log, my body felt tired, and my mind was at unease no matter how much I tried to calm it. I paced the room Olivia was sleeping in. She'd drifted off after what felt like hours of me holding her, her ruined wedding dress exchanged for a spare shirt and sweats one of the staff had found. Her face was still streaked with dried tears and mascara, her wrists raw from the ropes.
Today was supposed to be one of the best days of our lives. Instead, it had turned into a battlefield of smoke, shattered glass, and questions from police who looked at all of us like we were guilty of something. I kissed her forehead gently, whispered that I'd be back soon, and left Matt standing guard outside the door with strict instructions not to let anyone but me in. He nodded. I still didn't fully trust him, but Olivia swore he'd saved her. For now, that had to be enough.
