If Gerald went missing or was dead under those circumstances, then it was more likely that the person using the card would become a person of interest and would be looked into further, since they could be the reason why Gerald was missing or dead.
If they looked into the security footage around those locations where the ATMs were used to make the withdrawals, then they would see that it was Gerald who was doing the withdrawals.
