Lara stayed at the edge, her knuckles white as she gripped the doorframe, watching the spot where he had landed until the curve of the track hid it from view. The other team members were pressed against the windows, their faces pale and drawn.
"He's going to make it," Lucy said softly, stepping forward to gently pull Lara back into the safety of the carriage. "Trust in him, Lara."
"I hope they make it in time," Lara whispered, her voice hollow and fragile.
Thomas looked at her and felt a heavy, inward sigh. 'Love is a burden,' he thought, turning his gaze back to the passing landscape. 'I hope I never experience a tether like that. To be free is to be safe.'
But as the train carried them further away, he joined the silent vigil. He prayed for Trevor, but he also searched his own mind for the missing pieces of the puzzle.
